  • dude not so good :( but think now u are better in 2012

  • -_____- not even celloist or violaist argue about who used bows......honestly bows have bene on strings before guitars had been in hands so stfu its the samedela but a different position on a different instrument....

  • Are you using Jónsi's bow? :P

  • is that a violin or cello bow

  • Comment removed

  • @MrJOTAMOTA it doesnt actually matter, both is made of horse-hair:)

  • To get a good sound wouldnt you have to change out the bridge to something that resembles the shape (Curved instead of straight/flat) of a violin?

  • omg wtf

  • dig what u r doin ---i modified my strat to get more sounds--wanna go futher--more mods on the way . dave (press gang)

  • Very good sound

  • retard

  • dam i like this pice of music sounds soo barron and amazing

  • @mechreports1

Barren, you mean? I agree :)

  • The bow was first used by The Creation. Page stole the idea from them.

  • there is no argument on if page invented this ..i remember seeing a documentery where he said he got this idea from someone else

  • ...lol he looks like he's touching something ;)

  • What size is the violin bow?

  • So do you still need rosin to create sound with the guitar, just as you do with the violin?

  • @lastnightguardian yes you do. Without rosin, a bow is totally useless. Be sure to give alot of rosin to the bow if you're gonna play bowed guitar!

  • To play on a guitar with a violin bow like this, do you just buy a violin bow and some rosin, and put rosin on the bow and then practice a lot?

  • @TheRottenPear yes, this is what i did.. practice, play and then experiment, the bow can actually be used in many different ways on the guitar, and can also add up some percussion elements to the whole sound if needed :) check the "calling you" track by stereochemistry

  • there are no problems with the strings????they don't broke

  • LIKE THIS SOUNDS!

  • Resident Evil xD

  • has a nice sound to it

  • Yeah you need to be going perpindicular to the strings and flat on the hair just like a violin to get a full tone.

  • Go Cards

  • pretty sure this was jimmy page's inovation?

  • @skillzdatkillz900 IMO, Sigur Ros popularized the playing of a guitar with a bow.

  • hi

    this sounds pretty good

i try to play my telecaster too with the violin bow, but it doesnt feel that easy like it does on a les paul

i dont get all strings to play with the bow, just E, D, H, E and i miss the A und G String...

have you got any good tipps for me how i can do it better ?

    thanks a lot!

  • @RipperKai I'd be pretty impressed if you got the H string to play...

  • @GuitarSwan

In german, the B string is known as the H string, and judging that he says "und" instead of "and" I'm guessing he's german.

  • @mitch456 Ha, didn't know that. That's cool, I just found it amusing.

  • this is not play the guitar with bow...search "JULIO REVUELTAS plays Capriccio Fantasia "

  • I was thinking of buying a violin bow to have a go at on guitar..but did Jimmy Page have the Echoplex pedal on while playing guitar with the bow?

  • Who the hell cares who the first one to use a cello bow on a guitar is?

  • Does make for some wonderful ambience.

  • THAT IS FUCKING SACARELIGIOUS! JIMMY PAGE WAS THE FIRST ONE AND THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD DO IT RIGHT

  • @Gnomepaste Actually Jimmy Page took the idea From Jeff Beck. Jeff Beck used to do that alot when he was in the Yardbirds with an Esquire and Jimmy Page took to that idea and used it on an esquire until he got a les paul. and the reason it sounded better was because the les paul carved top had the clearance of angles much like that of a cello or violin.

Jimmy Page may have been the one who brought that technique into the mainstream view but Jeff Beck was arguably the first one to do it

  • @Gnomepaste Sigur Ros does it right all the time. In fact if you like the way it sounds when you're doing it...then, you're doing it right. There really is no RIGHT way so, calm down.

  • @Gnomepaste ye but thats just bull shit...

  • How fast will they wear out?

  • arguing over who invented the use of a bow on strings as page and jonsi?

    typical retarded guitarist conversation

  • @chrislpp I know, right?!

  • @chrislpp im pretty sure Page did

  • @chrislpp

I think it happen around the time that the viola de gamba was invented but most likely way before then because it must have been a while before they changed the bodyshape for better agility and way after that the new classical instruments came to be like: cello, viola d'amore, (differently held) violin etc.

  • @chrislpp I totally agree, and it doesnt matter at all, since Jónsi and Page plays in TOTALLY different ways. Page plays it like it would be some 60's shit. He's almost drumming the bow against the guitar, while Jónsi strokes it on the guitar, making it sound like a whale. It's like saying one drummer copies another, because he drums too? RETARDED

  • @chrislpp I INVENTED... end of conversation

  • @chrislpp Theyre not the only ones who play like that. Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead!!!

  • @chrislpp well tehcnically jimmy didd invented it, but jonsi was the one that perfected it into an art.

  • Wouldn't a cello bow be more appropriate? The guitar is closer in range to a cello than a violin.

  • @kratanuva725 I'm pretty sure Jonsi uses a Cello bow as well.

  • it's more easier and funnier if you play vertically ^^ , look at my video "dark sonata " , you'll understand ^^

  • Are those flatwound strings? Otherwise you can't hope to produce any sort of decent sound for long, the spiral winding catches the bow hairs and shreds them.

  • thats so sick man! sounds pretty damn close to sigur style :D

i wonder how it would be with flatwound guitar strings since violins are flatwound??

  • i like your cardinal sticker. alexisonfire?

  • i have to try this

  • love

  • Beautiful guitar

  • Is that cardinal from Sufjan's Christmas box set?

  • is it true that using the bow with the rosin makes the strings sticky and or it messes up the pickups or anything on the guitar. Btw is that a fender standard telecaster?

  • @Myoozzick

The rosin left on the strings would get it sticky. If it is left to build up then a scrape of the strings could take it off. When you are done playing you should always wipe down under the strings and the strings.

  • The cardinal sticker makes the guitar sound better. Good choice.

  • hey umm do any chords work better with the bow than others or it doesnt matter?

  • i'm using bow and I am still albe to clean my strings

  • how do u clean ur strings

  • how much and what kind is tht bow?

  • are any fx pedals used? or just straight guitar to amp

  • Delay, reverb and chorus can all make it sound trippier or smoother.

  • Can an acoustic be used?

  • @stripesandpeppers no way, normal violins, need like an e-guitar an amp that you can hear it. its totally impossible to use an acoustic for that......

  • @stripesandpeppers

dont count on it , the elements catch up the minor vibrations the bow makes while and acoustic guitar does not has this feature so the sound you will hear wil be realy low

  • Do you need to rosin the bow to play this?

  • I use a cello bow in my guitar, and use rosin for a better sound =)

  • Aight. Is a cello bow any better than a violin bow? Because I kinda don't wanna use my cello bow because I play the cello and don't want to use it.

  • no actually, maybe about size the cello's bow is more comfortable, but I think that violin's bow can do it too ;)

  • violin is better because cello is too big

  • @Slashe50 big change, without resin the bow has no grip on the strings, but it will ruin the guitar since resin is sticky and imposible to clean.

  • @Silverbluecrest

true the rosin makes the bow hairs have a grip but it won't ruin the strings. If it is left to build up then yeah it will. You have to wipe down the strings and under the strings with a cloth.

  • try a Cello bow and don't press, just glide your fingers on the E-string.

ps. is that a cardinal sticker on your guitar?

  • that is my dream guitar...

  • mine too, looooove

  • get a les paul instead..

the set-up is more suited for bowing.. whereas guitars tat uses low bridge is really limited..

  • Hi I bought a bow and nothing happen

What I need for this sound?

I have only bow, reverb and distortion

  • you need to put colophan on the horse hair

  • the bow requires resin. thats how to get it to make a sound:) hope this helped.

  • Have you used Rosin on the bow?

  • Comment removed

  • Does playing with the bow mess up the strings or the guitar

  • you get rosin all over your strings from the bow, but it comes off easy

  • oh my fucking god! is beautifullll

  • wow! priceless comment!

  • you need rosin the strings are much to hard

  • *_______*

  • the national did this at one of their concerts and i was like O_O

  • sounds more like Set fire on flames than Sigur Ros

  • Set Fire To Flames*

  • very nice, keep it up dude

  • awesome

  • I have this same setup and I could literally do it all day.

  • I've always wondered what this sounded like

  • yup same here

  • Yep.

  • uhmm I think the first guitarrist that used a bow was Jimmy Page right?

  • No. Not at all.

  • screw you :)

  • I'm serious. I didn't wanted to be rude. Just look it up on wikipedia if you want.

  • yeah well jimmy page is older. Jónsi is so much better and he does kind of use it differently

  • @EMOLVO he is no where close to being as good as jimmy page

  • @comosdedos wikipedia doesnt have the best information.

  • Yep.

  • Wherever there was a guitar and a bow in the same room, you can guarantee somebody tried it - maybe centuries before Jonsi or Page.

  • @dincz Yeap, but until someone invented an amp it was hardly worth trying was it?

  • Very cool video!

Message me about Sigur Ros and Way Out West

  • Your movements are too brutal , as Jonsi said 'feeling comes with the time"

  • isn't that a cello bow?

  • no, that is a violin bow

  • @EMOLVO what kind of a setting do you have? i try to get good sounds with a violin bow but i fail. i turn the delay and distortion on and rub some of that colophonium on the bow but it doesn't sound as good as this.

  • @EMOLVO you must therefore be a very small person playing a very small guitar.

  • I actually get the same sound with my EBow...and no rosin needed.

  • this is very, very old. As it says......

  • hi i recently bought a bow but when i use it i cannot get any sound from it. have i been applying the rosin wrong ? what could this be ?

  • try more rosin and a big delay on your amp!!!

  • this is very, very old! .....

  • @EMOLVO post one that is very, very new! :)

  • where would just a violin bow be sold, and does anyone know how much they sell for?

  • probably your local instrument-store

  • thanks

  • good sound sould like jimmy :P

    btw

did you put rosin on the bow?

  • yes of course. The bow must have a lot of rosin! the more, the better.

  • Wow good idea, is this like a new instrument?

  • You must listen to Sigur rós.

    Then you will know!

  • Yes I did look it up, a bit, loved the music from Vanilla Sky, 'The Nothing Song.' I hadn't realised until seeing this, it had been taken up by so many people, or how it was done, until reading the comments on here.

  • So, are you playing chords or how do you do it?

  • what pedal effects are you using?

    thx

  • I don't remember what is use in this one, because it's really old. Now i get a better sound, i should probably put it out there.

But now i use Boss DD-7, Line 6 Verbzilla reverb and boss od-3 overdrive

  • i have that same exact guitar

  • Great vid, The first few secs sounded like a boat horn.

  • Hey where would you find a cheap Cello Bow with out buying a Cello. Would a music store have em? How much?

  • I picked up one for maybe 30$. Find a store that has cellos, they'll sell bows.

  • It tried this before . Lots of fun. How do you clean the guitar after. Rosin is pretty messy as I remember!

  • As a viola player, I can reccomend you clean the strings with anything alcohol based. Ie perfume on a cloth, make up remover..... PS don't get it on anything varnished cos it'll clean off the varnish....

  • Yeah, I use a polishing spray (specially made for guitars) on a sponge to wipe down my strings. Rosin can be a bit messy, and can be hard to get out of the spaces between the strings. I just use a small cloth for that.

  • Sounds like the notes from the beginning of East Hastings to me

    but then it doesnt

    so not at all

  • play piano with a guitar for the ultimate thrash metal sound. also playing dumps with a violin.

  • I thought of doing this 2 day,

so I typed it in u tube, and sure enough,

    it had been done already!!

  • that sounded like the start of ny batteri

  • very nice

  • whitch effects do you use? a lot of reverb and??

  • inm not sure what he is using but its best to use lots of reverb and delay

  • nice cardinal punk

  • I got a bow yesterday. Tried playing around with but it sounds like crap. I want your sound, like how tight should the bow be, what kind of technique do you use, etc? Nice video 5/5. If you made it longer it could turn into a beautiful piece of music.

  • Use delay. It should be pretty tight (the wood part should be almost flat). Keep it close to the bridge and cover you pickups so they don't get ruined. Also, you need lots of rosin.

  • How would you cover your pickups? I have a telecaster, and I am thinking about picking up a bow and some rosin, but I haven't heard about covering the pickups, but I was wondering how just in case :D

  • also you need a lot of that stuff you rub on violin/cello bows. sorry i forgot the name.

  • Rosin. Yeah, he said that.

  • excellent. i have the same exact telecaster fender. o.o same color and everything

  • Awesome. Reminds me of GYBE!

  • the sound rox
