It's a balance between fulfilling the interests of campaign financiers and constituencies. I'm not arguing in favor of democracy and republicanism, though. I hate democracy in all of its forms.

"Democracy" can only be a fraud. The crowd cannot rule, only the elite can, and should, rule. Democracy works because of the illusion of elections and the popularity of its puppets. When even the puppets aren´t popular the more clever turn away in disgust but don´t know what else to do. They may still believe that "democracy" is the best form of government available but some things have gone wrong. The crowd is allowed to vote only on what had already been decided upon.
