  • Solti must have downed a couple of grandes of Starbuck's strongest on tap just before this. It's hard to say just what Kiri would do with this, as I'm sure Solti dictated this whole show. Maybe when she gets more established as a serious singer and/or chooses NOT to work with tyrants with caffein jitters. This pisses me off!

  • this is the second time I've to watch on YT Solti ruins this magnificent Lied (other with Lucia Popp 1977) - I watched the 3 other Lieder at this performance: terrible! - watch Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's confused view to Solti before singing at "Beim Schlafengehen"

  • Thank you !!!! Love R Stauss - especially when Kiri sings it!

  • I'm with the main rated comments here; This piece deserves more care and attention, rather than a glossing over. I'd love to hear Kiri sing this with a conductor who has more time before his next flight!

  • C'est fou comme certaines oeuvres musicales puissent nous fournir autant d'extase comme les derniers lieder de Strauss

  • großartig...

  • geht unter die haut...

  • Agree with the high rated comments. Should be taking notes from the Norman version. Slow and deliberate is the mood that this piece should be played.

  • Te Kenawa has the right voice for Strauss. She has sung Arabella and Capriccio with great success. I can also see how Renee Fleming was influenced by her. Like Te Kenawa, Fleming sang Mozart first & then Strauss. Te Kenawa sings this in a decent way but I'm not impressed. When you hear Jessye Norman's version, you can tell Norman truly got it right. it's a voice that takes you to Heaven after you die. I also like Martina Arroyo's simpler, warmer version.

  • Kiri, the Goddess!

  • Strauss himself was not one to linger sentimentally over anything. He got on with things; so does Solti. They both knew the cab was waiting.

  • Golly, Solti makes this gentle, profound music sound more like a John Williams Hollywood score than Richard Strauss's contemplative lied. Dame Kiri's lovely sound is drowned out by his over-loud, heavy, rushed strings ('tho less hurried than the massacre he carried out with poor Lucia Popp). For those who haven't heard it yet, I'd kindly suggest the version by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and George Szell (search on YouTube) to hear what I believe this music should evoke in the listener.

  • @mariandelochs And the Lisa della Casa recording as well. Schwarzkopt and Casa have little difference in tonality or col

  • sumptuous. Outstanding.

  • Whoa!!! Sir George! What are you, double parked?? (NYC expression) What's the rush? Geez, Georgie you ruined it for me. Slow down, fella, the goulash will still be there when you've finished! Yikes!

  • haha good one! I like the tempo though.

  • Yes, it seems a little fast compared to, perhaps, some of the Fleming versions, but listen to Popp/Solti (1977) here on YouTube, and suddenly this performance sounds leisurely. A beautiful rendition--thanks for the post. Anybody know what year? Looks like early 90's.

  • a little fast...

  • music from heaven!

  • thanks... i attended one of her fare well concerts.. she was Heavenly.

  • oh my. i love the piece. and she is divine as always.

also really like the shot, captivating

  • Thank you tremendously for posting this, Amethyst888. It is so beautiful; I'm so deeply moved that I am crying. Strauss,Solti,Kiri& the BBC Phil.together made this so sublime;words simply fail to describe its profoundity. With gratitude.
