Gracie is not forgotten believe me... nor the murmurs against her marriage to an Italian National. They faded with the completion of WWII but never completely went away. And let me remind you that Dame Vera went to the forgotten 14th in Burma, to sing and to talk and to assure them that by her at least and by all their loved ones, they were not forgotten.
Those who like this lady should look for Dorothy Carless and her songs with Geraldo. They should neither one of them be forgotten, nor should their contribution to British morale through the dark years of W. War II. Add to this list Dame Vera Lynn, who took her clear spirit and great voice to the front lines, to cheer the troops in person. Three great talents. Three great ladies.
@tonytanner1 I agree but I have to remind you it was Gracie Fields, who sang on the front lines raising vast amounts of cash for spitfires. Anne Shelton Vera Lynn kept the home forces moral up. I thought the same till I read about Gracie and her fantastic war work visiting almost every theatre of war world wide. Anne shelton and Gracie shared a dressing room for the 1978 Royal variety show, pity Anne did not get the reconition she so richly deserved.
It doesn't get any better than this. A great dance tune, and a lovely contralto singing this popular style. I'm sure she inspired all who heard her sing. Thanks!

Beautiful song... but for the sad lyrics... the first two lines leading one to think otherwise... Thanks for the unique contribution.

Brilliant and beautiful Anne Shelton, knew just what to do with a song, and always delivered, no wonder Ambrose favoured her

I simply love her rich contralto, she sang with such expression yet in an understated way.
