Go ahead and try to name one song by the this incredible talent that is not still a hit today...maybe 40 or 50 years later....name another that has nearly all of his songs still played by millions....KING....LEGEND.....HERO....naaaaa just "THE MAN"
Wish I was born in time and could have attended this Town Hall Party. Johnny did some of his best songs on this show. I'm thankful to the folks at Youtube for keeping these wonderful performances alive. The sound quality is also surprisingly good for this era.

What a talented performer and silky-smooth performance! The words of the song are a great cautionary tale to the young and reckless, too. In the violent world in which we live, perhaps more young people should hear this song and heed its admonition.
circa '58 I was 4...Goin' to the Rodeo with my dad...I was decked out in all the gear...my Dad sang this song to me...and I left my toy guns at home...This song still kicks my tail...!
He wistles quite alot whilst singing I've noticed. Great deep voice and my new favourite song. I found this song on my MP3's on my computer and I liked it and then I searched it on youtube.
tjcooler I second that notion...I heard it and loved it the first time I heard it. Looking back I never heard a song for the first time and loved it until now.....
True. It was sad to hear him on many occasions during the 60's. Such a great natural voice and then ruin it so mercilessly. He regained it more or less in the seventies, and had some great performances both in the 80s and 90s.

John's voice never sounded better than during this period before the pill addiction and cigarette cough.
