Damn, I never realized how obvious SKU was. They freakin' say 'A witch!' when they are talking about who's going to plunge the world into darkness, then show Anthy. Then with the little spotlights on Akio and Anthy when they mention 'A Rose Prince' and his 'little sister'. Guys it's all in front of you. Everything you need to know is in SKU already. :DDD
Neither Akio (the original prince) nor the Anthy (his sister) are the vilains. Anthy is in fact victim of hatred of people who selfishly expected her brother (prince) to fix any and all problems for them, to the point where he almost died from the effort. She just wanted for her brother to be left alone for which she was branded "witch" by an angry mob. She is now (in the story) cursed and imprisoned by that hattred.
Utena wanted to became prince to save her, she just don't remembers the reason correcty (as the prince foretold she has forgotten most o it). Absolutely fantastic variation offairy tales about "princes on white horses" = messiahs who are everybodys property when people need them, but nobody actually cares for them.
No, and don't think Anthy is te villian of the history (I think is Akio ^^U) In the special manga someone said about Anthy "The call her witch because of the love she can feel"
Look at my video response "Summary of Revolutionary Girl Utena" then look at the descriptions I put on it.. Click on the last 3 episode review, I put it there why she's a witch..
And, yes she may be a villain, I know a lot of people who hates her, if you rewatch again, you can see she actually adds wood to fire.. But Akio is also at fault.. The manipulator siblings..
@simhopp It's never really explain explicitly, but we can see them being Indian-looking as a clue as to how ancient they both are - Like they've been around for ages, long before Japan ever existed.
@steffiereggie You seem to be pretty up on the symbolism of Utena so I figured I'd ask you. In the scene where Anthy and Utena are drinking tea and discussing what they want to do when they grow up, they say they want to drink tea again in 10 years together. When they both admit to poisoning each other and the scene ends. Whats the meaning behind the poison?
God, Anthy's expression (or lack thereof) just gives me chills. This whole scene is so ridiculous but ominous at the same time...

4:22 Akio's expression here intrigues me... he looks so melancholic. One can only wonder what he's thinking.
