  • The moment anyone here can pour their guts out into a song and be able to compose something, then sing it in front of sold out crowds and make a brilliant career out of it...then you can try at a 'non specific' and useless comment. Maybe and only then will it carry any weight, although even then you'd just come off looking jealous.

  • does anybody know where to find out how to play this song on the piano?

  • Was the piano tuned downward for this performance? It sounds it.

  • What a great song.

  • I always thought when he said 'before I quit', he was talking about music, especially considering 'I'm Dead (But I Don't Know It)' from that album, but I think its about quitting on the ex-wife he's singing to, which is also unfortunate of course.

  • Imiss my big bro Rodney Kurz . R.I.P love Kenny.

  • 1:55 Holy f*ck do you hear ambulance signal at the background? It's a coincidence, but with lyrics "I miss you" it's very moving...

  • I am always speechless when I hear this song! I love you Randy!

  • Good song! Try also Jasper Steverlincks' version... He has an amazing voice! So beautiful

  • 1 person has never been missed by anyone

  • Me and my girlfriend of 3 months just broke up, this song is getting to me like crazy.

  • This guy gets to me like noooo other.

  • My only one, I gave my life, but with failures too, no one is without em, I will love you

  • Beautiful goosebumps. Thank you Randy. I love you. x

  • How does an artist who loathes composing a love song, compose one honest love song before he ends his career? Here you go. The verse containing "'I'd sell my soul and your souls for a song " is Newman taking a jab at himself.

  • the fucking master

  • Ich haue jetzt mal einige Randy Newman-songs raus, das muss jetzt sein. Egal was ihr denkt! HA!

  • This is his most beautiful song....just wonderful

  • I like it.... ' I'm sorry, but i do... '

  • This is one of the most amazing songs ever. It's so real...I can feel his love and pain for his ex-wife. The lyrics are funny too in a way: 'It's a little late, twenty years or so.'

  • wow. i promised myself i wouldnt cry. go randy!!

  • seems like he hears the siren at 2.30 - and the plays the fourth-interval... great little detail!

  • who is hearing who? maybe the siren was ordered right to this place and it fits!!!! i like those details, good ear man!!! btw what a great song, randy is such a terrific songwriter, love him!!!

  • @doowopsounds - yeah, he is a fantastic guy!

  • my favorite thing by him was "I love L.A."

  • adeus pollyn amazing jazz song!!!!!! CHECK IT OUT

  • Onhuur...

  • It is true

  • Doesn't anybody here, all the people who think this song is so beautiful, notice that he sings "I'd sell my soul and your souls for a song / So I'll pour my heart out." Does that not smack of cynicism?

Has everyone forgotten that Newman is a satirist, first and foremost?

  • it is more self-reflecting on the speaker, seems an over all apologetic song.

  • yes, but it's more. Good music.

  • @TLHobo

nah, its about a writer writing a oversentimental song that will will sell in bucket loads

"I'd sell my soul and your soul for a song"

great song, but I think Randy is still writing from a characters point of view

  • Randy Newman is my god

  • This one always gets me in tears, just love Randy, my mom always played his songs when I was a child

  • He's so cute when he plays hehe!

  • jasper stevelinck sings this song also. But i like that version more.

  • Such an emotional song from a musical genius.

  • It's hard to believe that there was a time that music could be emotional without being "emo." Sigh. I think that's called "having soul" as opposed to "getting wasted and whining."

  • he said first wife when I was married to my second

  • When I saw him in concert a year or so ago, he introduced this song as, "This is a love song I wrote for my second wife while I was with my third." Really funny, but it's a sad, touching song.

  • Oh, say, now I'm watching these in order it turns out that he does say that, only in the last video and I increased the numbers by one... but I could have sworn it was second and third when I saw him....

  • Isn't Randy just amazing!

I'm also a lucky owner of this complete concert. ;)

  • where can you buy it?

  • It's a TV recording and not available on DVD. :-/

  • The original is on his Bad Love album

  • Try to download it from a torrent website
