The moment anyone here can pour their guts out into a song and be able to compose something, then sing it in front of sold out crowds and make a brilliant career out of it...then you can try at a 'non specific' and useless comment. Maybe and only then will it carry any weight, although even then you'd just come off looking jealous.
I always thought when he said 'before I quit', he was talking about music, especially considering 'I'm Dead (But I Don't Know It)' from that album, but I think its about quitting on the ex-wife he's singing to, which is also unfortunate of course.
How does an artist who loathes composing a love song, compose one honest love song before he ends his career? Here you go. The verse containing "'I'd sell my soul and your souls for a song " is Newman taking a jab at himself.
This is one of the most amazing songs ever. It's so real...I can feel his love and pain for his ex-wife. The lyrics are funny too in a way: 'It's a little late, twenty years or so.'
who is hearing who? maybe the siren was ordered right to this place and it fits!!!! i like those details, good ear man!!! btw what a great song, randy is such a terrific songwriter, love him!!!
Doesn't anybody here, all the people who think this song is so beautiful, notice that he sings "I'd sell my soul and your souls for a song / So I'll pour my heart out." Does that not smack of cynicism?
Has everyone forgotten that Newman is a satirist, first and foremost?
It's hard to believe that there was a time that music could be emotional without being "emo." Sigh. I think that's called "having soul" as opposed to "getting wasted and whining."
When I saw him in concert a year or so ago, he introduced this song as, "This is a love song I wrote for my second wife while I was with my third." Really funny, but it's a sad, touching song.
Oh, say, now I'm watching these in order it turns out that he does say that, only in the last video and I increased the numbers by one... but I could have sworn it was second and third when I saw him....

it is more self-reflecting on the speaker, seems an over all apologetic song.
