I agree wellness is considered a very premium diet, but I myself will not consider it the best one. I prefer orijen and things with more meat content.
The best dog food is the kind you make yourself at home using human grade ingredients you find in a supermarket. Otherwise, you really do not know what you get.
Also, would you eat the same food each meal each day, for months and months and even years? Why would you feed your dog that way then?
Check out my book: Fresh Food and Ancient Wisdom: Preparing Healthy and Balanced Meals for Your Dogs by Dr. Ihor Basko
I found a whole dogs toenail- and yes it was a dead dogs toe nail in canned dog food!- I now make my own dog food- I start with oat meal & add chopped apples for breakfast, then cooked chicken for lunch & eggs for dinner- I make dog cookies from bisquick mix w/ chicken broth & liver bits. My young dog who was listless and sickly is now healthy and running and jumping again- make your own- don't trust dog food companies. Greed is their #1 ingredient. google recalled dog food- hundreds are
You see, Noah never knew of Wellness brand petfoods. Were there dogs on the Ark? The bones, if they are bone fragments, may cause scratches in the colon in some dogs. For 1000's of yrs. animals have eaten 'off the land'. Todays'dogs are genetically bred to require commercial foods. And they are also required to have $1000.00 operations to remove tumours. Ths is the American way. Sort of like having a 40 000 watt car stereo, and a 900 gal. gas tank., and 1/2 the population is prisons.
I just bought this product for my dog. After watching this video, i inspected the food. I discovered about 18 pieces with bones and i didnt even pour the bag out! Needless to say i am returning the dog food first thing in the morning!
This is the response Newman's Own gives about "white specks":
14. What are the white flecks I see on top of the food?
When cold, the food may have gelled broth and tiny globules or fat on the surface. These are natural occurences as the formulas do not contain any emulsifiers, fillers, gums or artificial colors. We recommend stirring in a small amount of warm water before servicing to your pet. This will help to soften the food, even out the consistency
this is frightning what if dogs ate this stuff? I know what it is! its white fish bone. I saw another vid about it! and many people have contacted wellness they don't seem to care though!
OMG- fish bone is likely to be the least harmful thing in a bag of dog kibble! If these are so common and DANGEROUS then why haven't we heard about dogs getting injured? Where are all these lacerated insides??? The tiny specs you show are clearly not large enough to hurt any dog that is large enough to chew that kibble! Have some perspective people!
Did you notice that one of the ingredients is Menhaden fish meal? I think that is probably the course of the little specks, not the "deboned whitefish".
Menhaden is a type of herring. Birds, porpoises, sea lions, and larger fish eat that sort of fish, bones and all.
I'm sorry I was addressing Mewmeowable when I was refering the eggs. I have purchased a bag of this and have found white "specks" some alittle more larger than a grain of sand others not. I normally feed raw, and that is the reason I do: because there are alot of unkowns in dog food among other things. I agree, these arent egg shells.
I was pouring my cat a bowl of her Wellness cat food a few minutes ago and discovered a long bone sticking right out of a piece. I broke apart several other pieces and found bone in almost every single one. I can't believe it... I quickly googled about it and watched this video along with the WARNING video. This isn't a hoax! CHECK THE FOOD.
I don't understand what the big deal is. Wellness is one of the few dog foods that is preservative free, and made from quality meat and vegetable sources. I am impressed that this brand added phytonutrients such as lycopene from tomatoes as well as omega-3 and omega-6 faty acids...derived from fish. Anyone who has ever caught and cooked their own fish knows that fish bones are relatively soft and no problem to chew and swallow. To me this video offers no good reason not to buy wellness dog food.
@massiemassacre The "big deal" is what is your dog eating? To most of us, that is an extremely big deal. We would like to know EXACTLY what is in the food our dogs eat, not all the fluff you describe. All the best ingredients in the world mean nothing, if you don't know what the other ingredients are. We would just like some concrete report stating what these specs are. If you have that info, please post a link. We would appreciate knowing what those specs are.
I am a senior and my children tell me, Mom, don't believe all you see on the computer. I saw the Wellness with bones video and became concerned, so I tested it myself. I poured out my dogs Wellness Super 5 mix food onto my counter. I looked thoroughly and sure enough found white specs.I got my magnifier out and something was poking out of the food. I scratched it with a fingernail and it was sharp and did not move or bend. Don't believe the video or myself, but do take time test it yourself.
There are dangerous, razor-like fish bones in the Wellness pet food that could cut your pet's esophagus or even your finger! Wellness V.P. Greg Kean stated that he is "not concerned." He admitted that he gives his dog whole eggs, that's not just the whites and the yolk, but the WHOLE EGG IN THE SHELL!!!
Could you please post or show your proof that these are dangerous razor like bones? That is what all are are trying to determine I believe. No offense, to you post intended, just trying to get some facts out there to help us all make a good decision on what to feed our extended family. Thanks.
@mewmeowable Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you don't agree with feeding whole eggs in the shell. I know this is off topic, but I know many many raw foodists who give their dogs the whole egg as do I, and I've never ever heard anyone have a problem with the shells and their dogs. Not to mention the thousands of wolves that eat duck eggs, goose eggs, etc throughout their lives.
Thank you very much for posting this. I shudder at what has been going on in my dog's insides when he ate this. Cooked bones of any kind are not safe.
We dont know exactly what these are. We are still waiting for a consumer to send this off to a lab, have pieces tested and then post definitive results. I have seen no such report. Until then, we can only believe what out eyes see.
My purpose in making this video was to simply show what is inside of a sealed bag of dog food. At the very least, get people thinking they they should LOOK at their food. Make their own assumptions based on what is factual and non factual. Other video not factual IMO
I emailed Wellness about the other YouTube video and they made an excuse. They will not tell me what the white pieces are. Very sad. How does "deboned" fish in kibble have bones in it??
this food has a TON of mineral and vitamin compounds in it, could the chunks not be vitamins? also what food DO you feel provides such a balanced diet that IS safe?
Two answers. I dont know what the white pieces are. I never sent them off to be tested. I simply made the video to show what was actually seen in a bag of this food. Look at the other controversial video on this subject. That video was subject to manipulation. I tried to make mine objective. People can guesstimate what those specs are for themselves or send it off and post results here.
I believe the best food for your pet is homemade. Who has the time? So we buy the next best thing. IMO
@bossudude420 I would like to note that I broke down about 15 pieces of kibble and sifted through the whole bag of chicken SUPER5MIX from wellness(the one with the purple label) and I didnt find any suspect shards or white crumbles.
I think the fish products are the issue, and I did watch the other guys video and I dont think it was a conspiracy. He had no motive. wellness is no threat to any other dog brand and they dont even compare to unit sales of lets say newmans own let alone a BIG brand
I did check my dogs food of Wellness and found sharp objects coming out of some of the kibble. I do not know what they are but they are definitely there and definitely sharp.
With tiny yorkies I do not want to take the risk. Please people dont judge any of these comments..take the time to go throug the food like I did and see what you come up with.
@bossudude420 I do believe this company has had quality control issues and having heard of people with multiple bags of wellness from various stores containing MOTHS and INSECTS. i would say some of their facilities are poorly run but this is true of any product of anything, and the customer base who is willing to shell out for organic dog food probably also tends to be a bit hypochrondriac
Thank you for the review and for displaying the product honestly and out of your own pockets we really appreciate your input. I do like Wellness I am feeding Innova evo at the moment if I do try wellness it will for sure be the Core with the brownish bag and not the fish
Look at the other video on here. You can pick that guys video apart. Cut/splice/edit. There are opportunities for it to be staged and sleight of hand. I think one can clearly get his point.
So on the contrary, no product ever leaves the framing of my video. You see every action from start to end. You can make your OWN decision about this food. I just hoped to do it a little more subjectively. If anyone gets anything from his OR my video, it should be that you need to LOOK at the food you feed.
I have a 75 pound lab golden mix. He's eaten a whole lot worse then a tiny barely visable spec of possibly bone... Whatever the case, it's way better than "spec-less" foods like Pedigree, Purina, etc. How on earth that thing is going to create a problem I don't know. I'll spend my time worrying about other stuff.
Wellness and Eagle pack were bought out by the Berwind company. Berwind is a family-owned investment management company. With its roots dating to 1886, Berwind has evolved from its beginning as a coal mining company, to a diversified portfolio manufacturing company. Other industries they own including pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, office and craft, automotive, pet food, and natural resources.
The white specs are ground up bones which are great for a dog's diet... high in calcium and other vitamins. Completly harmless. I wouldn't feed anything but Wellness to my dog!
Ever since I switched my great dane to Wellness, he has had bloody diarrhea, gas, and the most putrid smelling stools. The vet ran tests and found nothing wrong. When I switched his diet, the blood and the diarrhea stopped. When I added two cups to his bland diet, the diarrhea started again, along with the blood. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I analysed his food, and not only did I find those white specs, but I FOUND STRANDS OF HAIR. GROSS. I'm switching him immediately. Thank you for this video!!
I feed a homemade raw diet but I have made recommendations to people who didn't want to go that route. Wellness (core) along with others like orijen, before grain, canedea(sp) and others of the same quality. Anything you can get in the grocery store or walmart is garbage.
i say that if anyone has a question or would like to have an annalysis of their wellness brand dog food they should contact the company, From personal experience they have tested and given me a report (good and bad) on what i found in their dog food. Maybe the "whitespecks" could be a source of grain or something
Why dont you comment on what they told you? I think we would all be interested in what was "bad".
I think I believe a third party analysis might be a bit more believable, don't you? Is it possible that an in house analysis might be slanted? Possible?
possible absoultely with more then one "pet" food company i would agree 100% ! But what wellness didn't know was i had a third party review the ingredients. One "object" was confirmed as a piece of plastic packaging (possible from fruit, vegetable packages) an error that was not sweetened up from wellness at all, appologies were made and investigation ensued as to how it got in the food. The other object was an spice that was not "mulched" properly.
Ah. Good information. I don't have a conclusion that any of what I found is bad. I just fired up the video camera, (my hobby and newly found business) and videoed what I found when I opened a factory sealed bag. Viewers can draw their own conclusions and do their own "testing".
But so often what we conclude is false. If I opened a bag of that food (which i might do later this week lol) and found what u have found...... I wil inbox you on what Wellness has to say:) Not trying to argue, its just nice to "chat" with a consumer who cares:) Keep up ur good work, and if u have more pet foods that are "odd" let me know!!!!!
You guys seriously need to relax! Dogs are designed with a gastrointestinal tract just like wolves and are designed to eat bone. I give my dog raw bones all the time and they often splinter into sharply edged pieces. These are digestible for both dogs and cats. The average consumer is so hooked on feeding their dogs overly processed 'human-designed' foods that they forget what a dog really is designed to eat
I didn't find anything in the Wellness super5mix puppy food. But this week I started giving my dog Wellness super5mix puppy food for the large breed (he is a GSD, 11 weeks old), and I noticed this morning when I was feeding him, there was a white piece in one of the kibbles caught my eyes. So I scooped out another 1/4C food, and I DID FIND around 10 pieces of white "bone-like" things.DEBONED chicken and DEBONED white fish are the first 2 ingredients, huh...I will get them tested!
Remember the entire purpose of this video is an "observation" only. One can test, opine, comment on whatever they think these white pieces are. I make no claims or inferences as to what they are. Just that they are there. I never tested them.
blackcici: you should feed him adult food, twice the amount of the puppy food, He's a large breed and puppy food will cause him to grow too fast and as a result possible cause hip and elbow problems later on. Do some research on it please. Remember Vet know next to nothing on pet nutrition as they are taught by the dog food industry, mostly Hill's, makers of Science Diet.
Oh god, I've got a can of wellness for my kitten! I never buy fish for her so I think it'll be ok, but now I'm scared to give it to her. I usually use EVO and Before Grain, but they didn't have Before Grain at another pet store so I read the label and went with a can of Wellness.
There were more than 5 pieces. I just stopped looking and counting. I didnt make this video to debate whether the bones are harmful or not. I clearly state that the intent is to simply show what I found when I opened the bag from factory sealed. CLEARLY, I repeat, CLEARLY there was something other than dog food pieces in this product. If you want to know what it is, I suggest you do the test and send it off and get it tested. Post some results instead of your opinion.
pfft notice how theres like 5 pieces of kibble with bone in it, all of them at the BOTTOM of the bag. geeze people are ocd. dogs aren't people and are made to digest bones, there are even bones in canned fish for people that are supposed to be easily digested!
I knew 4 dogs that died from eating the wellness brand. Blue buffalo brand natural dog food AND Innova EVO brand are the best dog foodsyou can buy. Wellness brand kills your pet stop before its to late.
As much as that poster didnt post their references or statement of fact, your statement is equally suspect. You don't really KNOW for a fact that there are no known cases of deaths from Wellness do you? REALLY? Do you know that for 100% FACT? and if so, how do you KNOW?
Sorry, I don't think anyone cant state your assumption as FACTUAL. It may be POSSIBLE that the poster may know facts that you are not privilege to.
@Consumervideo Well....with normal reasoning one can deduce that no dogs have died from Wellness. Why?
1.) There are no dog deaths on record anywhere that have been legally tied to the ingestion of Wellness dog food. And yes, I do know this as fact, I asked them directly. They are required to disclose that information.
2.) I myself and several people I know all feed their dog Wellness with not a single adverse effect. For years.
He/she NEVER said he had four dogs die from wellness. The poster says they KNEW four dogs. You quote them out of context.
Anyway, the point is not whether dogs have died from wellness. The point is WHAT are the small white bits in the food? Waiting for a "named" source that we can quote.
Ahhh, you asked them. If I were them, I wouldn't have any records on hand that said my product killed any dogs either. Good point. I'll have to remember that. No records on hand. How do you KNOW that is not bone? Can you name your source for the test? You asked the other poster to name his source. Just wondering if you can name yours.
Sort of a game isn't it? Who can name a source? The only thing I can name is what I saw with my own eyes. And shared with you all. I don't even make any assertions
You are 100% right. Different people may buy from different plants. I buy the Wellness Core for my cats and there is nothing of such sort in the food. Although I live in Canada so if I went to, umm Texas then they may have bones. Wellness is excellent food, way better than Iams or Whiskas. Check for bones and if you see none then feed the food. It is a way better choice for you dog or cat!
My dog has been on Wellness CORE for a week and is already showing health improvements. I don't thing I'm going to switch because the original formula doesn't have fish anyways.
CORE is great, i feed it to my cat and like you say within a week I saw her with more energy, and she had lost a little bit of weight. Buy core its the only dry food I know of without any carbs
I've been feeding wellness for years, and my dogs are perfectly healthy. Furthermore, I opened and examined the three bags I have currently, and found nothing of the sort.
I think all of us who have this happen to any of our pet food we need to get a class action law suit so our pets can be heard!! BONES that are cooked can be very deadly!! I have even contacted wellness too show them the list of videos they dont even seem to care !
I just looked through my Wellness Large Breed Puppy food. Sure enough, there were small pieces of bone in the food! I am switching brands. Thanks for the video.
I examined my dogs food and did find specs and scratched one with my fingernail. it was indeed sharp and did not move. I don't know if it would harm my dogs but it is definitely there in the food. I was a doubter. Do test it yourself.
I agree wellness is considered a very premium diet, but I myself will not consider it the best one. I prefer orijen and things with more meat content.

possible absoultely with more then one "pet" food company i would agree 100% !

Consumervideo 2 years ago

The average consumer is so hooked on feeding their dogs overly processed 'human-designed' foods that they forget what a dog really is designed to eat

pauxecide: the key word here is RAW. Never ever under any circumstance feed your pet cooked bones.

So I scooped out another 1/4C food, and I DID FIND around 10 pieces of white "bone-like" things.DEBONED chicken and DEBONED white fish are the first 2 ingredients, huh...I will get them tested!
blackcici 2 years ago
Remember the entire purpose of this video is an "observation" only. One can test, opine, comment on whatever they think these white pieces are. I make no claims or inferences as to what they are. Just that they are there. I never tested them.
Consumervideo 2 years ago
blackcici: you should feed him adult food, twice the amount of the puppy food, He's a large breed and puppy food will cause him to grow too fast and as a result possible cause hip and elbow problems later on.

I usually use EVO and Before Grain, but they didn't have Before Grain at another pet store so I read the label and went with a can of Wellness.
fifimsp 2 years ago
There were more than 5 pieces. I just stopped looking and counting. I didnt make this video to debate whether the bones are harmful or not. I clearly state that the intent is to simply show what I found when I opened the bag from factory sealed. CLEARLY, I repeat, CLEARLY there was something other than dog food pieces in this product. If you want to know what it is, I suggest you do the test and send it off and get it tested. Post some results instead of your opinion.
Consumervideo 2 years ago
pfft notice how theres like 5 pieces of kibble with bone in it, all of them at the BOTTOM of the bag. geeze people are ocd. dogs aren't people and are made to digest bones, there are even bones in canned fish for people that are supposed to be easily digested!
dogsarebetter 2 years ago
I knew 4 dogs that died from eating the wellness brand. Blue buffalo brand natural dog food AND Innova EVO brand are the best dog foodsyou can buy. Wellness brand kills your pet stop before its to late.
metal1mark73 2 years ago
@metal1mark73 Really name your source. There are no known cases of death from Wellness. Operative.
Jennofthejungle49 2 years ago
As much as that poster didnt post their references or statement of fact, your statement is equally suspect. You don't really KNOW for a fact that there are no known cases of deaths from Wellness do you? REALLY? Do you know that for 100% FACT? and if so, how do you KNOW?
Sorry, I don't think anyone cant state your assumption as FACTUAL. It may be POSSIBLE that the poster may know facts that you are not privilege to.
Consumervideo 2 years ago
@Consumervideo Well....with normal reasoning one can deduce that no dogs have died from Wellness. Why?
1.) There are no dog deaths on record anywhere that have been legally tied to the ingestion of Wellness dog food. And yes, I do know this as fact, I asked them directly. They are required to disclose that information.
2.) I myself and several people I know all feed their dog Wellness with not a single adverse effect. For years.
Jennofthejungle49 2 years ago
He/she NEVER said he had four dogs die from wellness. The poster says they KNEW four dogs. You quote them out of context.
Anyway, the point is not whether dogs have died from wellness. The point is WHAT are the small white bits in the food? Waiting for a "named" source that we can quote.
Consumervideo 2 years ago
@Consumervideo
3.) Wellness has not ever been subject to any recall. If any dog had died from their food, you can rest assured they would be recalling their product.
Even if say, one dog at one time somehow died from Wellness food, what is the probability of this one guy having 4 dogs he personally knows all die?
As for the white specks, they are not "bone", they are bits of rice and or barley/oats, depending on the food.
Jennofthejungle49 2 years ago

It is a way better choice for you dog or cat!
xeal25 2 years ago
wait you didn't throw the whole bag away and waste it did you? or did you jsut throw out the ones with the bones sticking out
dogsarebetter 2 years ago
My dog has been on Wellness CORE for a week and is already showing health improvements. I don't thing I'm going to switch because the original formula doesn't have fish anyways.
dogsarebetter 2 years ago
CORE is great, i feed it to my cat and like you say within a week I saw her with more energy, and she had lost a little bit of weight. Buy core its the only dry food I know of without any carbs
xpo50 2 years ago
It is very possible that we buy from different plants of manufacturer. Remember not every peanut butter plant had salmonella issues.
Why don't you do your own test like I did?
Video doesn't lie to a trained eye.
Consumervideo 2 years ago
I've been feeding wellness for years, and my dogs are perfectly healthy. Furthermore, I opened and examined the three bags I have currently, and found nothing of the sort.
CorgiPawsx 2 years ago
Those white specks happen to be fish bones. Swap brands, NOW.
warrior123400 2 years ago
I think all of us who have this happen to any of our pet food we need to get a class action law suit so our pets can be heard!! BONES that are cooked can be very deadly!! I have even contacted wellness too show them the list of videos they dont even seem to care !
presouz 2 years ago
I just looked through my Wellness Large Breed Puppy food. Sure enough, there were small pieces of bone in the food! I am switching brands. Thanks for the video.
SuzieMG 3 years ago
This video scares me! Has anybody done this with the chicken food for cats? I am going to go examine the bag now!
moviegal226 3 years ago
I doubt it. It's easy to seperate chicken from the bone. While it
s hard to be sure your getting out all of the fish bone
dogsarebetter 2 years ago
@moviegal226
I examined my dogs food and did find specs and scratched one with my fingernail. it was indeed sharp and did not move. I don't know if it would harm my dogs but it is definitely there in the food. I was a doubter. Do test it yourself.
