Bit of advice--do not paint your spars. You'll most likely regret it. Even the best paint will eventually flake and/or wear off leaving an ugly mess after a couple of seasons.. Use aluminum jelly, or even a scotchbright pad to cleanup. I can speak first hand on this--should have left them alone.

does having a fairly shiny hull make the boat any faster?

@southafricantiger -- no the shine is the gloss in the paint in so paints the gloss in it can slow the boat down
