@fastmannnnn the third!....Mercedes had three blowovers....one in qualifying....one in the morning warm-up.....then Dunbreck's blowover going through the 2nd "dog-leg" on the run-up from Mulsanne Corner to Indianapolis.
I remember seeing this happen live on TV when I was a kid . Such a shame. For me those CLR-GT1's were the prettiest cars I've ever seen in that class.
I remember watching this race when I was 13. After that, I tried to find out which race this was, and to find the video. Finally I found this! Thanks for sharing.
This happened earlier to Mark webber in the other merc, and in practice Mark did it again, 3 times, same accident, mental. Then Mark flips over kovalainen. Poor bloke.
@desmo181: Yes, you can change the aerodynamics so that this wouldn't happen anymore. They were also able to install flaps on the Nascars to prevent them from taking off when they were going backwards.
@Ultrajuiced do you mean the roof flaps?well, they also don`t prevent the cars of takin`off all the time.like it`s shown here: watch?v=lzUGyX32glg . but crashes like this are fortunately very rare. the 2nd problem is, u cannot install them on the rooftops like on nascar cuz u don`t have that space on every racecar..maybe u could install them on the bottom but that seems to have an negative affect on the aerodynamics..however..
@PfhUkJiu101 untrue. The car in this clip here was driven by Peter Dumbreck. This was the last of three flip-overs in this week, it happened on Saturday afternoon in the race before the 'Indianapolis' corner. Mark Webber's CLR had flipped during friday's qualifying and during saturdays's warm-up-session over the hump at Mulsanne. After the crash as shown here in this video, Mercedes ordered the last CLR into the pits.
i remember watching this live, and i was stunned to see the driver unhurt, sitting nerar the wreck. quite a testament to the saftey mercedes demands even in their race cars.
wasn't downforce that was the issue. They put more weight at the front of the car after crashes 1 and 2. This is what happens when you shape the car like an airplane wing.
I guess Mark Webber thought, "Here we go again." 11 years later he thought it was time for a rerun, when he made a almost exact same crash, when colliding with Kovalainen.
@iluvworldofwarcraft Yes and no, the CLR was its successor. ;) It used most technical components of the CLK GTR as they were still up to date, but the rest was more or less new.
@calumROBLOX The design of the car was at fault. There are rumors saying that the way the air went over the car created lift like a air plane wing....
"they can't believe it happened again"... again? When did this happen the first time? I saw another vid of a car flipping, was that it? it used to be used on "speedvision" as a commercial.
@CRISTOFF17 hmm, definitely not the same car I saw before now that I found the clip I was talking about: wJF06ZP7U2s that clip was used in the commercials. Turns out it was a 911 GT1 at road atlanta.
This is what happens when cars have a flat pannel covering the bottom of the chassis, and not enough downforce. I'm really glad he survived. However! I still stand my ground as to no car should have the entire chassis completely covered like Mercedes did with this car! Why do some auto manufacturers insist on doing this!? WHY!? WHY!? Diffuser's are one thing, but a completely covered bottom of the chassis will upset the aerodynamics of a car!! And it's near fatal crashes like this that prove it!
the flat panel on the bottom actually helps in aerodynamics, because the bottom is flat, there's no place to where air-resistance can take place underneath the car... that can help at a car's top speed... and besides, once a car has taken off due to high speed, flat bottom or not, it will take off...

This is what happens once you remove the Group C tunnels and putting not one but two stupid chicanes on the Mulsanne straight. Le Mans used to be such a fabulous race a mere shadow of what it once was. Long live Group C forever!!!!
@carbonsnail Mmm... No. Today's P1 cars could easily exceed 260mph on the unmodified Mulsanne, if you launched at that speed the car would completely disintegrate driver and all.
The funny thing is when I played GT4 years ago with Mercedes CLK-GTR Race Car, the car did the same thing in the same place and I thought to myself that it was just a glitch...
I can't help but think that this is one reason why they took closed cockpits off Prototypes for a while: with a cockpit dome the car inadvertently has a wing-shaped profile which lends itself disturbingly well to lift...
@KevmeisterHo Nope Webber crashed in qualifying in almost exactly the same manner so it's understandable why you'd think that. Peter Dumbreck crahsed a couple hours into the race which this shows.
@Infynyte True... very true... LOL I hope he wins this years F1 championship.. for some reason..I just dont think Hamilton deserves it. I guess I have no love for a newcomer coming into a series and getting into a great established team like McLaren and thinking he is hot shit.... Politics is politics though.. I think its 60% car, and 40% driver now days. Back in the 60-80's and earlier.... you needed big balls.. now days, you just need a team with a blank checkbook.

and yes, Snow (or massive rain) and Merc-Rear-wheel drive sucks.. always fun to watch my neighbour try to get out his Merc of his basements garage - especially last winter..we had a LOT of snow here in germany :D
guys, you can`t compare an Penis-enlargement-car like a veyron with this racing cars (!)... seriously, start to think before writing down such a crap.
whats next? somebody who thinks a dragster would beat a F1 car on a Grand prix circuit, because it has more horsepower...? wtf..
@skp115 - no it wasn't Webber, this clip is during the race and while Peter Dumbreck was driving. Webber did it in practice and the warm up, don't know how thay let them race considering it happened twice before it even started.
yeah, webber wasn't in the seat at the time, however he had a massive accident yesturday at the european GP. went into the back of the lotus and went sky high. he's alright now.
p.s. i'm not saying the Veyron would win purely on it's speed, because like most of you say there's braking and cornering to take into account, i'm just saying they can be compared.
Actually comparing the Veyron to these cars is pretty apt. You do realise all the cars in Le Mans have to be road legal. If a Veyron was to take part in a Le Mans race it would be set up for the conditions just like all the other cars.
Think about it this way, the Veyron (on the road) is compared with the McLaren F1 which itself is a multiple times Le Mans winning car. Personally i'm not a fan of the Veyron, but if it where to take part in a race it would be set up to do so.

p.s. i'm not saying the Veyron would win purely on it's speed, because like most of you say there's braking and cornering to take into account, i'm just saying they can be compared.
