is it true that Pat wears a wig? not that I care, he is still one of my favourite guitarists, it's just funny though coz I've been reading alot about his wig-wearing in blogs.
@gillan5 disagree. First of all, it's not Metheny's tune. Second, his Group records are totally different than his trio or solo records. Third of all, have you heard his more "avant-garde" and less-known records such as Song X, Zero Tolerance For Silence or Sign Of Four??
@swieca666 Thanks for reply. I do not recall song names. I will certainly check out the titles you gave me. I have listened to 4- 5 CD`s over the years and I just find that they all sounded the same. Maybe I am wrong. I liked his playing with Nils Landgren on Jazz Baltica live - its on youtube.
@swieca666 quite a funny comment gillan5 considering metheny is one of the most influential guitarist of all time, who has constantly evolved, and is considered one of the 'go to' musicians for some of the greatest musicians of all time. Me has worked on many collaborations with Garrett, Brecker, Holland, Coleman, Jim Hall, Meldhau to name but a few. He has constantly pushed the boundaries and defined what the guitar can do. Lol!
@swieca666 don't waste your time swieca666, anyone that thinks Metheny has sounded the same for decades has not been listening for decades, and knows nothing about Music! I will bet he will site some lame ass METAL guy as his favorite! Very nice of you to educate the tin ear petri-dish!!
@gillan5 obviously you only listen only to his one or two songs. you should explore all his albums. he has different concepts for each albums, and he is simply great.
@Medjai411 I try 1-2 more albums; if they will still sound like California Surfing with Jazz I give up on Metheney. One other thing which for me is annoying: his guitar does not sound at all like a guitar. Mostly it sounds like some kind of sythesizer. People obviously like that washy undefinable sound - I don`t.
@gillan5 you're talking about his soloing over straight 4/4 .. you should listen to "the way up" album or orchestrion or the metheny mheldau album. oh and also, "one quiet night" if you want something low key. But i mean.. ya if you listen to 3 of his songs out of the thousand plus (probably thousand plus) he has recorded then I understand why you might get the impression that he sounds the same...
you my friend are a fucking idiot. I hope that you are but a child. Are you one of these quackados who still believe that the earth is the center of the universe. Your musical IQ=your shoe size.
@casszen And you my Child should learn to accept other people`s opinions without slaughtering them, otherwise you will never be a real grown up.
And go see a doctor, your aggressivness spills out of my computer. You are a hater, you are dumb and slow witted. I never aggress people on youtube. I just state my case like adults do. And I accept if people really think the Metheny CD`s would sound any different.
I burned oFFramp down to the core i still have that white album and american garage and that one with jaco and bob moses this reminds me of that time when i firast heard jazz thanks alot..
Although it has no hook to it...It sounds like a bunch of people making noise..To me that is. And I know these people are really good...But I really don't care for it
i know what you feel: for the first time i heard it i felt like u, but everytime you hear it again its gettin´ better. its probably like a good wine, sometimes the second draft tastes better ;-)
The beauty of improv is theres never a wrong note. Unless of course the note that comes out isn't the one you meant to play, in that case it can be wrong to you but not really to anyone else :P
Yes-This is such an excursion back , Seen them in N.Y. at this time 90-91, & also was backstage throughout show.Jack was amazing- as all were ,here , a VERY COOLNIGHT...
And 1:33 - 1:40 is definitely altered with a little bit of whole tone. Pat Metheny is the man! Even playing out like that, he makes it sound so right lol.
What I meant was his harmonic approach. The phrases he's playing in that interval are very altered compared to the original chord, or chord progression. By altered I mean its not diatonic, or not the given notes of that particular chord.
One of my favorite parts is at 1:33 to 1:40...what is Pat playing there...does anyone know? What's his approach, his thinking, is it modal, if so what. It's just a really cool choice of notes phrased in such a tasteful manner. Maybe it's elementary to many others, but to me it's quite captivating. Then again @ 6:29. Really like the melody thing starting @ about 3:00 and dropping around 4:10.
i think he's playing altered scale on that moment, but i'm not sure. Pat is a musician with unique approach to harmony, melodies sometimes seems so strange, but still beautiful...
Yeah definitely sounds like an altered scale, if not its definitely heavily altered approach. He's playing off the vamp, very cool indeed. I love it because when they're vamping like that, he pretty much can play anything and Herbie will be right there to back him up, whether melodic or chromatic.
i think that his approach is more to do with structures, " playing through the changes that are'nt there" kind of super imposition, there is a really cool book by andrew green called "jazz structures" that touches on this
By the way...Thanks for all the excellent comments on Pat's playing here. Been working on the modes of the major, but haven't yet considered the modes of the melodic minor, especially the 7th mode...how cool and limitlessly useful it is. Has changed the way I play. This vid is quite an inspiration as well as all the seasoned player's comments.
For what it's worth, my thanks to all...and a deep appreciation to Pat.
Its hard to imagine but the studio version of this song smokes this version. Herbie does a piano solo in the mid-section, where he is playing that little midi-keyboard here, which is truly some of the best jazz piano I have ever heard.
is it true that Pat wears a wig? not that I care, he is still one of my favourite guitarists, it's just funny though coz I've been reading alot about his wig-wearing in blogs.

Released in 1990 on MCA. You can get it online.
