I remember reading somewhere that Chris and Sean switched instruments when they realized they were better suited to each other's (and when it became clear that Chris was an insane genius mandolin prodigy), but wow, Sean's dang good at the mandolin too!
Thank you for posting this. It's incredible to see the beginnings of a group I've been in love with for so long. Seeing their skills at such a young age...crazy.
Also, if you read their bio it says that Sean played mandolin at first and Chris played guitar. After a while playing together they both decided they wanted to play the other's instrument. Worked out quite well, if you ask me.
No, this is actually right! Check out the ending of the next song (2 of 3) where Scott Thile (on bass) says "Sara and Sean Watkins" and then points to his left & right. Chris (on guitar) also extends his arms out in recognition of them. Then, Sean (on mandolin) say's "Thank you very much!" It's very clear.
@wwfrench Yeah, but look at the faces! I know you're right and there was a point that Sean was the mandolin and Chris was the guitar, but that's definately Sean's face in the middle. Maybe not. I have to watch this again.
I don't think thats Chris on guitar. The footage is a little blurry, so I look at it by height. The mandolin player, I think Chris, is way taller, just like today.
Nope. Back in the day, Chris played guitar while Sean played mandolin. And at that point, Sean actually was taller :) See if you can find a copy of their first CD floating around -- it's called "Little Cowpoke."
Awe this melts my heart, they're amazing~!

Sean was too small too get his arms around a guitar when he was little. So, he started out playing mando and went to guitar when he was big enough.
