  • Awe this melts my heart, they're amazing~!

  • Holy shit.

  • Very good, well reheased..

  • I remember reading somewhere that Chris and Sean switched instruments when they realized they were better suited to each other's (and when it became clear that Chris was an insane genius mandolin prodigy), but wow, Sean's dang good at the mandolin too!

  • they sounded spectacular, then and now

  • yeah, back then Sean played the mandolin. and if you look at the guitar player he really does resemble Chris.

  • wow i can't believe this! i'm so proud!~ PRAISE GOD!!!

  • too cute and amazing good.

  • LOVE it.

  • This is fantastic. Almost unbelievable.

  • baby nickel creek - awwwww

  • Thank you for posting this. It's incredible to see the beginnings of a group I've been in love with for so long. Seeing their skills at such a young age...crazy.

  • no doubt born with a guitar mandolin and voice!!! wow!!! can you imagine how they are going to sound when they are older!!! wow!!

  • @applewhiteroad This is Nickel Creek when they were little

  • heyy if you like nickelcreek check out my music??? you'll like it i promiseeeeeeee

  • omg he's even singin harmony at SUCH a young age!

  • Oh my god. . .Sean used to be tall!

  • je zus

  • Freakin' incredible <333!~

  • HOly crap they were ridiculously fast when they were young too

  • You're looking at three prodigies.

  • THIS IS AWESOME that they still have this! I love it!

  • Well, Chris and Sara are the same age, while Sean is 4 years older.

  • this blows my mind...this really has been their lives, how incredible

  • I think it's funny that Chris is playing the guitar and Sean is playing mandolin...

  • yeah and Sean is ripping it up!!

  • Sean was too small too get his arms around a guitar when he was little. So, he started out playing mando and went to guitar when he was big enough.

  • i now know why i love this group...they have so much talent!!! so much talent...

  • I think Sean Watkins looks a lot like River Phoenix here.

  • All I can say is WoW! they were born to play and sing.... You go you guys

  • thats just plain awesome

  • Thanks so much for posting this!!!

  • 1000s thanks 4 postin this pearl

See they were already stars at a very young age

  • This is too cute! lol!

  • Hahaha I was going to say Sean was alot more talkative back then, but I guess I was mixed up. Oh Chris being the showman.

  • Sean has always been the small one from the group hasnt he

  • Sean is playing mandolin here, so he started out being the tall one. Chris shot up.

  • this is awsome. i know scott thile and have met chris. Its amazing that they were so good still at such a young age.

  • This made my day! Thanks for posting this.

  • Heavenly voices, instruments and song! 5*

    Gretsch'n

  • Also, if you read their bio it says that Sean played mandolin at first and Chris played guitar. After a while playing together they both decided they wanted to play the other's instrument. Worked out quite well, if you ask me.

  • Wow, was that Chris hitting the really high note at the end?

  • that's not chris on guitar its sean and he still looks that small when he holds his guitar now

  • No, this is actually right! Check out the ending of the next song (2 of 3) where Scott Thile (on bass) says "Sara and Sean Watkins" and then points to his left & right. Chris (on guitar) also extends his arms out in recognition of them. Then, Sean (on mandolin) say's "Thank you very much!" It's very clear.

  • @wwfrench Yeah, but look at the faces! I know you're right and there was a point that Sean was the mandolin and Chris was the guitar, but that's definately Sean's face in the middle. Maybe not. I have to watch this again.

  • yeah um just check out ANY photo of them at that age and you will see you are wrong... sean was taller for a while

  • Sean plays guitar NOW, but i can totally tell that on this video, mandolin is Sean, guitar is Chris

  • i didn't know Sean could play the Mandolin...

    haha i love this lot!

  • This is amazing!! Haha they are soo little wow!!

  • I remember hearing in an interview that they have been playing together for years and years. Weren't they called "Seldom Clean" back then..?

  • How old were these kids during this performance? Thanks.

  • Chris and Sara would've been about 11, and Sean was about 15.

  • This is great!!! excellent archive footage

  • this is some classic footage. yowza.

  • At 2:15 maybe Chris was saying to Sean, you know I think we should swap instruments, and Sean was like, okay.

  • Haha nice

  • and the rest was history!

  • I don't think thats Chris on guitar. The footage is a little blurry, so I look at it by height. The mandolin player, I think Chris, is way taller, just like today.

  • Nope. Back in the day, Chris played guitar while Sean played mandolin. And at that point, Sean actually was taller :) See if you can find a copy of their first CD floating around -- it's called "Little Cowpoke."

  • wow, I didn't know that. thanks.

  • Plus, remember--Sean's a few years older than Chris, so he would have been taller than Chris then.

  • It looks like Chris thile is playing guitar... and Sean is playing mandolin.... wow that's unbelievable... great video man....
