More proof that the best music is from before my time. These days, most music really sucks. I was born in '94, but the best music was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I was born far to late to enjoy such great classics.
The first time I heard this version was the first time I liked this song. I have heard j simpsons version what a piece o junk. Blondies wasnt bad but not for me. I heard this when Crowley on Supernatural was playing it and knew I had to have it. I enjoy Nancy. Ive got a few of her songs. I had no Idea she sang this though. Im so glad I found that out. BTW Goodnight Moon is my fav of hers. Heard it first on Natural Born Killers. Fav movie also

@KittyKatlyn1 jessica simpsons version is a porn version of a good song with shitty music so dont say its better when it makes some noises that literally makes me feel bad
@KittyKatlyn1 did you fell and hit your head against a brick or what?????, no doubt Jessica is gorgeous but not even in her best dream she can sing better than Nancy Sinatra, no way !!!!!!!!
I do not EVER want to listen to a single album or even song unless it is recorded exactly this way. Debate it ALL YOU LIKE but the ONLY truth is that THISSSSS is how music was MEANT TO SOUND. The End.
Thumbs up if you had already heard and known this song as well as a lot of other 60s music before you saw Full metal Jacket like me....Although, I still loved Full Metal Jacket. Best and most realistic war film right under Platoon.
Along with the great players on this, Nancy sounds as cool as the other side of the pillow.
Jessica Simpson's version is absolutely insipid. The music stinks and all she does is whisper in place of actual singing. It's forgotten already besides with a few young nitwits with no knowledge of real music anyhow.
@quadleaf95, and everyone else who has mentioned her name, if you think it's bad that Jessica Simpson covered it (Which I agree with you by the way), check out Megadeth's cover. Thats even worse.
Wow...This really does sound like it's from a Strong AM Radio Station!
The compressed AM transmission Does suit this song Very Nicely!
It takes the sharp distorted edges off of Nancy's vocal audio.
But it does lose the 'Distinction' of the bassline a little by compressing and lifting it to the same level as the other audio...All down to personal choice though!
It's by far the Best version I've heard on Youtube...At the Moment...haha!!!
@GeoSilverMore Thanks man. There was Chuck Domanico and I just wanted to be sure. I wonder if Chuck Berghofer is aware that his descending line is still heard by many round the world.
@GeoSilverMore I have been looking for the isolated bassline for this song....you wouldn't happen to know if it exists anywhere would you? Thanks :~) This sounds amazing, by the way!
@onemikehart What do you mean? The writers/arranger called the bass player before the session and told him what they had in mind. What do you mean he didn't do it in the studio. Remember you are hearing a glorious processed AM radio sound here. The players talked about the session years later. You think Chuck recorded it separately? So maybe.
It's difficult to say exactly what might be different, when a recording has been through several stages of processing and compression. No offense to YouTube, but it's not the best place to judge audio quality.
Having just listened to an original 1965 vinyl stereo version on another channel, I can honestly say the only difference I hear is that yours is mono. Special mono mixes were often done for AM radio, rather than simply folding down the stereo version.
@GSMovieMoments It's @JeffN727 's upload here: watch?v=U16DjE2jRj4 I'm no expert on the subject. That was just my guess as to why there might be a difference. But I think the mono versions would have been available to the public too, not just radio stations. Again, just guessing.
Haha I had no idea there was so sharp lyrics in the 60s or wherever this is from and it fits so perfectly with Operation Ivy, search for Operation Ivy One of these days! it sounds so cool!
One way to get back the warmth from digital audio is to copy it onto reel to reel tape. The recorder I have is built into a JVC console stereo circa 1970 with Germanium transistors and transformer coupling. Those and the "head bump" in the bass range give a gutsy sound without the sharp edge and thin bass of digital recordings.
@monomerx001 Could that be like the Sound Retrieval System used for expanded stereo on analog TVs. It brings everything to maximum.
Of course there was auto recording level compression with my radio recorder, but so does AM radio. Anyway this is all for the better of the sound, I say.

I always prefer Analogue recording than digital, digital recording will have brighter and clearer sound and a wider range, but then it lost the deepness, richness, & the original taste, particulaly with thinner bass sound. I've tried to convert some analogue recordings in audacity to do upload, it was bad & there is not much differnece whether you choose 16bits or 32bits, may be audacity is not a good media for digital mastering..
