I think if there were more therapists like this, we'd all be in better shape! This is hilarious, but what makes it all the funnier is that, like Woody Allen material, it actually makes sense on a certain level. That's how I quit smoking 20 years ago - over night from 2 packs/day to zero. ...just stopped it! lol Great skit. Thanks!

There is some 'truth' to the method here, though. The world would be very different, arguably better, if people just stopped doing lots of things. Like watching TV.
Bob Newhart is a great comic. I was not into his humor until I watched the re-runs on late night tv of both his shows, BOB NEWHART, and NEWHART. I find his talent to be amazing how he can underplay a role and be so dry, but yet make you laugh. His humor is never foul or racist, but one time I was watching an episode and I was laughing so hard I woke people up and they stayed up and watched the show with me. Times like that you just cant plan, they happen because of people like Bob.
I remember there was an episode where his wife was afraid of flying. He was doing a workshop for people with the same fear and he laughed when she told him. She asked why and he said because it was silly
This skit is hilarious, but reminds me of a fact that isn't funny at all unfortunately. There actually ARE therapists out there that really do think this is the right approach. IMHO, all who do think this is right are in it for the wrong reasons, and missing the real point behind this skit.

Those who think this is really good advice from Bob Newhart are missing the real reason it's funny. It's funny because no good therapist worth his/her salt would EVER dish out such drivel. Some people should watch his original show and come to a better understanding of his humor. The whole point of the show was how ignorant he actually was in spite of his "authority."
