His HEALTH was in a very problematic state, and the bypass surgery quite possibly saved his life.

And like an above poster stated...after bypass surgery, you STILL need to follow strict diets, exercise etc. The REAL challenge is KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF years post-op. His girl is a triathalon competitor...i DOUBT she would be dating a lazy bum.
