In Tales of Destiny2, in Barbatos' first fight, he counters your item usage with Shadow Edge.

In Tales of DestinyR and Tales of Vesperia, Barbatos counters your item usage with a Hi-Ougi.

In Tales of VS, Barbatos unleashes his Hi-Ougi if you pick up an item during his Overlimit.

@Keraroo Yep. And it's freaking painful. he'll even come after you if you use a lot of artes in a short amount of time, This is backed up on how I spammed "Azure Edge" when I played as Kyle in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3. Seriously man, he hits HARD!!
