I've been in a situation where I froze due to lack of a killer instinct and I realized my deficiency and adjusted as best as I could. I wasn't injured but I brought the confrontation to a prolonged stalemate until assistance arrived.

My point however was not to discredit you but your approach. It's a very tough job to be a police officer. You're always in the sight of the public mostly and aggression leads to overkill which can complicates things. You don't kill a mosquito with a cannon.

The goal is to use the most effective force for the appropriate threat level. In such an instance vs an armed attacker, shooting/killing him can be easier justified.
Being someone employed in a security based profession, the use of force is justified by 5 things and level of forced used is controlled by 3 elements.

It varies from country to country but as an officer it helps you retain your job but not always your life.

@chrisgrinhard Tazers don't always stop suspects and pulling your gun to order him to the ground is sure to work vs someone as compliant as this guy was. His legit options are to disengage and shoot the guy dead, deal with him hand to hand or let him go.
Regardless of how you train, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. So we can say all this and if were you or I in there, the outcome may be TOTALLY different in the most negative way possible.

Maybe you and I are different in our "fighting mentality".
My training is designed for this type of situation.
To be QUICK and VERY BRUTAL..that is how I've trained for years,sparred for years.
IDK if you've trained to handle "fight or flight" situations, but I have.
IDK if you've trained in KILLING STRIKES, but I have.
IDK your fighting mentality, mine is attack weakness,quick,brutal,destroy!

I've done training for handle "fight or flight", I've even had to fend for my life(I got slashed(laid 1 out,chased other away WHILE BEING INJURED) by 2 dudes during attempted robbery years ago BEFORE I REALLY STARTED TRAINING TO INCLUDE WEAPONS DEFENSE.).

I started training to deliver kill strikes and training for MORE SPEED/HAND SPEED, and to STRIKE BRUTALLY WITH INTENT TO DESTROY "IF" NEEDED.
What I'm saying is, your MENTALITY determines how you deal with "fight or flight"
If you don't have PINNED UP RAGE in you, adrenaline response with make your training "ineffective".

I've been in a situation where I froze due to lack of a killer instinct and I realized my deficiency and adjusted as best as I could. I wasn't injured but I brought the confrontation to a prolonged stalemate until assistance arrived.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. I began to understand my faults as a fighter.

@chrisgrinhard Training in a vacuum was not enough. The mind needed to be trained also. I realized the need for aggression in training but as I developed further I needed not aggression, but rather focused intent.
My point however was not to discredit you but your approach. It's a very tough job to be a police officer. You're always in the sight of the public mostly and aggression leads to overkill which can complicates things. You don't kill a mosquito with a cannon.

@chrisgrinhard Doing that is considered raising the threat level. That's why police procedure is not to open fire behind unarmed targets. The goal is to use the most effective force for the appropriate threat level. In such an instance vs an armed attacker, shooting/killing him can be easier justified.
Being someone employed in a security based profession, the use of force is justified by 5 things and level of forced used is controlled by 3 elements.

The level of force used is guided by 1) the level of aggression of the assailant, 2) the officer's perception that his life or another's is in danger. 3) the means of force available to the officer at the time.
It varies from country to country but as an officer it helps you retain your job but not always your life.

@chrisgrinhard I personally become rather ruthless in such situations but if I become personally invested via aggression, I tend to take it too far. I've almost ended up in court for a couple of situations myself.
I give the officer full credit for toughing it out like he did because his aggression would've ended up on youtube in a big way. He did show a lack of a hard and fast, approach.
Much respect for keeping it civil unlike so many others I talk to about these things.

First, help an officer at all times. He/she is a person and a human too. That would take deadly force already out of the equation. However, this fighting went on too long and could have easyly cost the officers live. Therefore the officer should have, after facing this, run away to get some distance between him and the guy and then draw the Tazer or the Handgun and shot as the situations would call. Bystanders not helping are scumbags, losers and don't deserve to live in peace
