It's always been about the music with these guys. Their instrumental pieces are the core of this band, and is what the fans really appreciate. Not the theatrics.
Make up and clothes only detract from the amazing music that Genesis produced. It's like saying Michael Jordan is better because of the shorts he wears (no disrespect to Nike or whatever his underwear brand is). Gabriel was a mega-force and an amazing performer/composer, but they left their talking to their music, not cheap theatrical tricks.
This is no disrespect to Mike but I can see why Peter left his mark on Genesis during the live shows, the make up, the wild clothes etc. From watching the videos with Mike and Tony Banks, they seem stiff when they played. Peter's performance put a new dimension on their shows, without that, I am sure their shows would not be that interesting. Again no disrespect to Mike.
While I felt the same way as a youngster listening to the greatest proggers of all time, having seen the spot-on recreations of The Musical Box over the past 15 years, I have developed an appreciation of how much Mike contributed to the overall guitar sound of Genesis! Sebastien is one busy rascal up there with the double neck, pedals, acoustic 12 string, etc. I do not like any of the Mike & The Mechanics B.S. though. Props to Mike in the day
Whoa...remember that every guitar part since ATTWT was written entirely by Mike (almost) and he's done a big part of the overall writing of the songs. He is an integral part of the most varied prog groups of all time.

Mike is awesome. He does not deserve hostility. He is a brilliant musician whom has written many fine songs.

Why such hostility towards Rutherford from some people? I've noticed this on a couple of other videos, too.
Both Hackett and Rutherford contributed greatly to the sounds of Genesis, but they did it in different ways, that's all.

He made little important contributions to the "real" Genesis period.
