You can read betting patterns & the amount of time it takes for you opponent to act. You can also use those aspects against your opponent yourself. Aside from reading visual/verbal cues, the basic strategy still applies online (e.g., don't play 7-2 o/s from early position, etc). If you play online vs. a skilled pro, you'll always loose in the long run. I play Hearts online, too. And, aside from the visual/verbal cues, the game is fundamentally similar to the way it is live.

I got hooked on OLP for a couple years. When I followed smart strategy and had good discipline I could more or less break even, occasionally make a small profit. What keeps it going is gambling addiction, people thinking it's going to pay off someday. My roomie was an addict who would blow his rent money on poker. That's what's degenerate about the game. You're basically stealing from less clever people and hot heads who can't control their emotions. That's a very immoral way to make money.

Yeah, when I get knocked out of one of the little $20 buy-in homegames that I play with friends, I steam for a few hours about playing poorly and being out $20 bucks. But, I'm not out on the street living in the cold the next day. And, morally, at least the money goes to ppl I care about. I think there's a big difference between gambling with your life savings vs. playing within your means. I don't see how playing within your means can be considered gambling, or risky.

So he could be winning $10,000 in tournaments, but then buy-in for, say $1000. You keep playing a high-variance game, you're *gonna* go broke. What he should have done was follow the 20-buy-in rule, or 50 buy-ins for MTTs. Even the *best* player in the world WILL go broke if they eventually play for too high stakes.
