Yes, it is quite confusing but let me attempt to explain. Those scenes are symbolic of an emotionally immature Charlie "growing up" and sowing his wild oats. He left, going on a road trip in a sense to find himself. "What did you learn?" "I'm back." He's done with his ways, finally satisfying his emotions but coming to realize he does love her. Those things are what he missed during his sudden and rapid intellectual growth - before he had never matured emotionally. (and yeah its really trippy!)
