On this date in 1957 {Feb. 23rd} "So Rare" entered Billboard's Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} and spent 38 weeks in the Top 100, was also the groups debut record on the charts.
Ranked 5th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1957 chart...
Was Mr. Dorsey's last Top 10 record; his 1st was in 1941, "Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy)"...
Must have been so hard on the elder Mrs Dorsey losing her two sons only 8 months apart (there was another son lost in 1914) She outlived them all, passing away finally in 1968
This song was my introduction to the "Big Band" sound-- and I don't think I could have had a better introduction to it! "So Rare"typifies everything that the "big band" sound was all about-- an orchestra of talented musicians, under the direction of a talented leader, producing music that just plain made people feel good and want to get up and dance!
@vegrights Harry Carlson, President of Fraternity Records here in Cincinnati had to rush the gold record to NYC before JD died on 6-12-57. He actually presented it to him in the hospital! This song along with several other tracks including "June Night" were recorded on 11-11-56 at the Capitol Records studio in NYC with the Arthur Malvin Singers. It would be another decade before Fraternity struck gold with the Casinos' version of "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" in 1967.
This song was released by Cincinnati's own Fraternity records. A misconception persists that it was recorded here but it was recorded in NYC. None of the big boys would touch a Big band tune- but Little local Fraternity did and struck gold. They also were working with Lonnie Mack (Wham ) at the time
While this may have ushered in the last of the Big Band hits on the Top 40, instrumentals still held much influence throughout the next five years. It's a genre completely lost on today's generation, however. The charts in 1957 (when this song peaked) were quite ecclectic (and marvelous), indeed, with acts like Dorsey sharing the stage with Elvis Presley, Debbie Reynolds, th Mills Brothers, Paul Anka Billy Williams, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers and many more. What a great time.
I love this song. I had the 45 of this and in 1957 we drove from No. Calif. down to Disneyland. I was in the backseat with my portable record player and played this song over and over and over again all the way to Disneyland. My father and mother never complained, but my younger brother and sister weren't too happy.
I used to hear my grandparent always play this music. It's one of their favorite if not the most. Personally I like his music than his younger brother Tommy Dorsey.
This one takes me back to my preteen years. Young as I was when this came out, I fell in love with it immediately--I guess I was a little behind or maybe ahead of my time then. Radio stations forget to play these songs on their stations when they play oldies. This one is platinum! Thanks so much for sharing.!!!
I first heard this in 1957, while flyling aboard a B-29. Interestingly we were monitoring Moscow Molly broadcast over a radio station originating from Provdinia, Russia. That morning she dedicated the song to the flight crew of the B-29 that morning. And we thought we were Hot Stuff during those times. It brings back many memories. Surprise! Suprise!
@calladclimited : That's pretty funny! So much for stealth spying back in those days, huh! I first heard So Rare in '57 also--was in Navy flight school. Never imagined that five years later, I'd actually be dancing to that song at a Dorsey performance. I guess we're both a couple of old-timers.
I have this 45 on my Seeburg SPS160 Olympian jukebox. And you know how I came about getting it? I heard the song on a Time Life commercial and went to Ebay and bought the 45. It's been in the jukebox ever since and let me tell you, it's an AWESOME tune when it's a clear nite with a soft wind as I'm drinking an ice cold beer and watching the moon dance across the sky. Thanks Jimmy for a great tune!
Just an unbelievable performance. The power and energy pouring from his sax just takes my breath away! And I understand he died of lung cancer two months after he recorded this? How could he have had such lung power and have cancer? Just don't understand!
@swain199 Interesting about Jimmy Dorsey that...now go listen to Nat King Cole sing "More" (I have it posted to YouTube) recorded 90 days before he passed away from lung cancer. Thanks for the comment.
@swain199 Gentleman Jimmy passed away 7 months after recording this classic. He gave it all he got, didn't he. Its said that in the hospital he was given a gold record for 'So Rare"'s sales. That must have pleased him so much and eased his pain.
@Nocaro .. I just subsribed to your chanel, thanks for bringing back the good sweet memories of the Golden Age of music. At my age , I really appreciate being able to see and hear the swinging bands of that era. Thank you.
yeah rock and roll had taken over a few years earlier and this was the swan song, and there were those who said rock and roll is not here to stay, hah!! loved this song though, thanks for sharing it with us
