What emulator are you using? Every NES emulator I download can't re-route the save state buttons to USB Joypad buttons and the one I did find lags the game when you save.

i have my keyboard on my lap, so I don't do that.

If you want to reroute save state hotkeys to a gamepad, try using xpadder to map a keypress to your desired button
