GOD DAMN IT! Now I think I need to get this game. I recently got Sacred 2 and while it has its flaws, I find myself playing it off and on. Currently level 60 on gold with my Seraphim. This seems like it might have a few flaws, but overall less than what Sacred 2 had, so might be even more enjoyable. Gah! I'll have to see what its going for on eBay. Btw thanks for a great review, everyone just copies what the others say, and join in on bashing the game, instead of looking at the good aspects.
I saw this game at Walmart for $20 and thought about getting it. But I saw so many reviews that only talked about all the horrible things about this game and I hesitated to buy it. Now I regret it. I'm going to get it next time I go out, it seems like my kind of game. Old school. Hardcore. It seems a little like Morrowind too. The only problems I see with it are the technical shortcomings from porting the game to 360 from PC.
@derekxnl yeah this game is for the "real" rpg gamers. Casual rpg gamers, or gamers who usually play other genres may not like this game much simply because they don't understand it. I personally find this to be one of the best rpg's on the 360. (only got it on 360 because my pci-e slot is dead on my pc)
You could be louder my friend....however I thoroughly enjoyed your review I was just messing around with risen videos and found this review I loved the game and still do I'm replaying it the storyline is good and the battles are hard and epic ^^
very good review! however, i think you could have put another minute in the design. for instance you said nothing about enemies (are there enough different types or does it get boring), NPCs, and you just said there's magic but that was it, no details there and no scene showing it. but as i said, still one of the best reviews i've seen on risen! im getting it monday, can't wait to play it :)
"There are no sidequests attached or markers pointing the way to the other half, it's purely 100% exploration." You could have just said "This game requires a guide or a map otherwise you'll have to go though hours of frustration looking for stuff to complete a random sidequest and most likely in the wrong place." Seriously, this is the type of game that NEEDS a guide in order to work, even if you're not the find and do everything type.
oh it isnt that bad...the graphics are shit yeah, the combat is shit also yes,the dialouge is...you guessed it also shit but its a passtime and nothings better then putting time in for gamerscore (if you play it on xbox) but...there is something that pisses me off the most, probobly the only black mark i have on it...for me when it freezes it turns a bright, annoying colour (red, blue, greed, yellow, purple) its bullshit, plus it does it to me when its saving...
Great review! Its just too bad that you played the game on 360 and loved it despite the bad graphics, instead of playing in the PC and loving it because all the good stuff you mentioned and the beautiful, artistic graphics with good draw distance.
The island was really great looking, in all parts of the day, and it was 100% hand crafted, so a lot of effort and attention to details went into it, unlike the generic world in Oblivion, for example.
definitely buying! dude you are so legit. ahaha i've been looking fora good review but no one seems to care about 360 version. Getting this and Dragon Age. Although DA is apparently amazing, i'm more pumped for this,
You started out by saying you weren't going to explain everything, and then you went and pretty much did - you had more info about this game and the gameworld than any other review of this game I have seen - so a huge well done! And if you think this game is good on 360, you should see it/play it on PC!- the PC is BUILT for cRPG's like this!! :)
Good review , however if you wanna get the best of this game , just get it for the PC , gfx and mods/addons you can install are insane anyways good review :P
@ChowTOdust. Yeah, if you liked gothic 2 this game won't let you down. I had a blast. The controls take a bit to get use to on a console, but the pc is pretty much exactly like gothic as far as keyboad and mouse is concerned..... but the xbox is what I. Played it on
Thanks alot for the review! Gothic 2 is my favorite rpg of all time. and gothic 3 the biggest let down. But I can see Piranah Bytes might just have another gem here. I will have to try this.
thank you for a great review Ace. its a great look at the game and really went far in helping me make a buy or pass decision, more so than even IGN. keep up the good work.
I love games that prove graphics arent everything. Dragons Age looks like a high-end PS2 game, but I still loved playing it. I really wanna give this game a shot if it's as big as you say. -Insert "size matters" joke here ;O-
Agreed, it's not always about the graphics. The content of a game can usually outweigh the beauty. Risen had alot of fun quests and I honestly don't regret buying the game.
Great review man.. Finally someone reviews Risen after having already played the Gothic series. This was a very fair review and finally brining justice to Risen as it deserves it.
Well, Oblivian would take the cheese for the most part, but one thing I really do like about Risen is the quests you do in the game. It's got alot of cool elements attached which gives it creditbility, My guess it's not going to get the greatest review, but I say look past it and give it a shot, I had some complaints, but I finished it feeling satisfied.
My only other advice is, expect it to be old school. It doesnt hold your hand like games these days. You'll get lost, you'll have tough fights and be carefull on lvling up, once you make your changes there is no going back.
Was this a review of the original Xbox version, or the new North American version with the graphics and control updates being released on the 23rd of February?
This review was the Asian/ European version of the game. As far as tweaks to controls and touch up graphics, I currently have no knowledge of these changes for the US version.
Well, make sure you study the bo-staff because magic aside your stil going to need sme form of defense weapon. Keep your mana potion supply up there, make use of your infinite inventory space.
