@senor47 The americans only pulled it off because of Leo Szilard. No one else could figure it out without his math, just as simple as that: Szilard had the original idea, he had the chain reaction patented and without that you can't build a reactor.

I know Meitner discovered nuclear fission, but didn't the combined effort of all the scientists; American and those expelled from Nazi-occupied Europe actually achieved the feat? I know Szilard informed Einstein about the Germans attempts at the bomb...I am still in my infancy in the world of physics.

Szilard was the only guy in Los alamos with enough knowledge about the chain reaction to solve this problem. It was of course a team effort and US economic power had also great effect but it wouldn't have happened without Szilard

Enrico Fermi and Szilard discovered uranium fission independently of the Germans in 1939 and they worked together to build the first reactor beating Otto Hahn's team in Germany for the reason I described.

In the US Szilard's role is systematically ignored because of his liberal and pacifist views: he was against the bomb being thrown on japanese civilians instead he advocated for a demonstration. The fact that his very reasonable petition was ignored makes you think about the true nature of the US political class.
