Several points to make, gb66! First, an excellent choice of posting, love it! Second, your pictures are both apt and amusing, love your sense of humour! Third, I'd like to reinforce the comments about Carter and Lewis. Never really wanted the limelight as performers but such excellent singers and songwriters. And, finally, Tony Burrows. His own website calls him "the best singer you never heard of". He still has a terrific voice. Check out his 1999 recording of this song on YT.
Tony is an innovative promoter for that phrase pretty well sums him up. I have heard a lot of his stuff. I have never understood why some artists who have a God-given talent to do such great things with music but stay reclusive. A veteran of many bands myself that never made it, I would have given most anything for that kind of opportunity.
thanks for your thoughtful post. Thank you even more for the view.
Produced by John Carter, member of the original Ivy League, who also wrote "Beach baby". In the opening shot of the First Class cd he is the one standing on the left with the sunglasses. John's a songwriting genius and a great singer. On this track he sings the high harmonies (as on most First Class recordings).
I wasn't familiar with this version, but you've now given me something new and that's always good. I have actually been searching for the version by Danny Hutton, of
(Roses & Rainbows) fame; who later went on to be one of the singers for 3 Dog Night. He recorded this song in the later 60's and it was a big hit in L.A. southern California
radio. Did you ever hear his version? Anyhow, keep up the splendid work and thanks again.
I agree with Ignoto1962, Tony Burrows was at once one of the most popular singers yet one of the lesser-known. In the words of the song, that is grossly "unfair". He is charming and has a great voice, he deserved far more recognition than he got.
This is was the very first single I bought as a kid back in 74 or 75. It's annoying, but I can't find this version on iTunes. I may have to go through the old stereo console and see if I still have the old single!
I really didn't want the "Best of" CD since I'm familiar with only 3 of the songs and "Funny" is the only one of those I want. I'll have to check out other download services.
I just read a wikipedia article on First Class. Its lead singer, Tony Burrows, was referred to as "a multiple 'one-hit-wonder' and one of the most widely-heard unknown singers of his generation!" (What a peculiar distinction!) He was also in Edison Lighthouse (which also covered "Funny") and White Plains.
I prefer the version by Harper's Bizarre at its faster pace.

Tony Burrows was/is a great singer and I also concur deserves much more than he has received through the years. Good call dinastein44!

See if you can download bitTorrent and get the single through your computer or get the Best of first class through Amazon or some other outlet.

There have been so many versions of this from Brit groups over the years. I have to say I like this one better than the original.
Thanks for the view!
