Anyone looking to fix there drives? buy a new drive, make sure its the exact model, theres 3 types. take apart the xbox 360 casings take out the drive, get the new drive, unscrew the back, carfully take out the circuit board, it has 3 or 4 ribbon wires. unclip it from the drive. do the same for the old drive. swap the old board into the new drive. boom new drive with out flashing cause the board is already flash to your xbox and hardware is just hardware. works like a charm mines going on 2years

i figured out that mine had nothin to do with the laser but it was with the multi colored wires tht plug into the dick tray in the back i have the slim so it is under where the kinect bar is supposed to be thts the other part of the wire tht part was unplugged i will try to get a video up to show you

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The problem I have is every now and then I'll put a disck in, close the tray, there's a two clicks then it says "open tray", so I'll open it, close it and it just keeps doing the same thing.

Now the last three times it's done it I've put the disc in shiny side up, closed the tray, waited for it to tell me to open it, then I've put the disc in as normal and it's worked fine every time.

I'm not saying this will work every time or for YOUR xbox in particular, but it will for some

Nevermind..sorry bout that. I took apart my 360 to solve & fix the problem. I did all the tutorial videos out there & none fixed the open tray error. I fixed the laser, cleaned it, adjusted it, every-fuckin-thing. Apparently it was the part that holds n spins the disc inside the tray. It wouldnt keep the disc steady & eventually fucked it up & stopped spinning. I figured I was screwed & couldnt find answers so I tinkered w/ it & tightend the screws on the spinning thing & now it works perfectly

Help! My xbox says open tray error and I took it apart and did the recommended fixes but no luck, I found out that it was not the laser, or alignment or tightening any screws, what happens is when I close the tray with a disc in it it the disc starts to spin for a second or two and then goes wild and flies off of the tray, it just spins out of control and flings the disc off the tray. I'm purchasing a dazzle so i will upload a new video starting with disassembling the console then regreasing the motor,cleaning the laser eye, and finally tightning the screws.

I have fixed alot of benq,hitachi,toshiba drives with these methods alone, aside from buying replacement drives and flashing them. Good luck gamers

easier fix is to bend a small piece of metal over like an AA negative battery terminal and curve one side slightly so you have a u shaped clip with one side slightly curved and use it as a buffer on the laser rail closest to the spindle with the plastic stopper to stop the laser moving right back to the spindle, basically the laser is moving back too far and needs to move away from the spindle which is why you can hear it buzz trying to identify disk type but is too far in to see the disk.

Hey try this method: Close the tray w/out a disc in and let it say open tray. Open the tray and put the disc in it; DO NOT CLOSE IT YET. Just let it sit for a bit (until your controller turns off). Close the tray and it should read it. It did for me.

@tmedina2008 The method I suggested doesn't work for me any more. Another method that I tried was to hold the xbox by the top and bottom (when its standing up), hold it parallel to the floor, and shake it kind of fast until it starts reading. It still works for me.

@420HighAllTheTime420 first off the idiot doesnt explain what is causing the probelm. IT IS NOT the range of the laser. The mechanism that controls cd rotation is the issue. How to fix it I havent figured out yet, other than the 'force start' method (removing xbox casing and manually spinning the cd when it's first inserted. This is also one of the safest because you dont have to alter any of the mechanics of the xbox to get it to work.

Hey if you have any suggestions on a lite-on drive where those screws do not exist let me know. I've tried quite a few fixes but non seem to work. It will only run if the dvd drive is wide open. If I put the xbox casing back on it... it'll gimme the open tray error again. Maybe it has something to do with the positioning of the laser? idk. but any input would be greatly appreciated.

i have the Benq disc drive so it looked a little different but i was able to fix the open tray error by moving the laser housing assembly back and forth (gently). i repositioned the laser and closed the disk drive and it read the disk for the first time in 3 months!
