LOL, you're so lucky your horse is small.
Mine is 16.2 hands high... I have great difficulties getting on him even with a saddle on! XD

yep! watch a vaulting video with a team doing competition and u'll see thats how ur acctually ment to do it...but often if u can jump hauling is the best method lol
