  • THIS IS WHY I LOVE TRAINS

  • WOW. I really feel I am the engineer at the throttle of the F40PH hauling THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR my favorite train. As RIO GRANDE slogan says THRU THE ROCKIES NOT AROUND THEM.

  • Really nice video, good end

  • @WhopBobbaLuBop there gone! Nice vd btw

  • awesome, how did you get the cab ride?

  • PS good engineer you got there.

  • Man I love workin the 26L's, I damn the fastbrake!!!, cant hear the damn air!,we here on Queensland Rail in NSW Australia, cant use our cell phones whist driving our engines, and it makes it hard sometimes to get a hold of the train controller on our radios sometimes, nice video man.

  • Man I love workin the 26L's, I damn the fastbrake!!!

  • Geil!

  • he almost hit that foamer.looked like he had a fancy camera.

  • ur are a lucky man.

  • You guys were movin man!!!!!!

  • too faaaaaaaaast!

  • @algeriasky78 NOT even!! lol

  • Wonderful K5LA horns. Don't know why but there's something really special about a clean, good working K5 on an F40. They just don't sound the same on the 500 series 32BWH or P 40, 42 series, although those aren't bad either. Great video. Thanks.

  • how much an hour ,would a csx driver be making ?......im curious aussie

  • You'll notice that none of you got any answers to your questions. That's because these are railSNOBS, not railfans. They are high minded and uppity and don't like railfans. Don't waste your time trying to ask questions or talk to them. Instead, get a rifle, go to an isolated spot by a rail, and snipe the cruel bastards.

  • what exactly is an office train? Never heard that term before.

  • @salemcripple - No, it's office car. We called 'em business cars. It's a nicely appointed passenger type car with amenities for railroad big-shots to tour the routes. They often will take along big customers to see where their freight is going.

As an Operator, I had to clear the rails of freight trains far in advance of an Amtrak train. Turns out there was a special car in the train with the Amtrak President's wife aboard. She apparently didn't want to see commoners along the way.

  • so who gets to ride the OLS? can anybody get to ride the train?

  • @CSX4772 - On our line, it was a special annual event. Relatives and family of railroaders were invited, so they could see the safety issues faced by railroad worker family members.

  • do you have to sound the horn that much?

  • @raymondrynehart - Yes, it's a requirement to sound long, long, short, long (Morse code "Y") before and though every road crossing.

Even so, sometimes people try to beat the train, even going around gates. At the end, the engineer tells of the crew's reaction to that.

  • @raymondrynehart When you've got a train full of officials riding behind you, you rip on that horn for all it's worth.

  • is that ex amtrak 390?

  • this guys horny by the sounds of things, he loves his horn he he he

  • Cool I would love a ride in my favorite engine!

  • DANG we were on the east cost during that time.

  • if passenger trains can only go 79mph why does the speedometer go to 130 lol

  • is this a commute train?

  • У вас так часто и так долго сигналят... У нас только перед переездами и перед препятствиями, если они возникают.

  • dude i seen this same train in kenly nc last august

  • Very cool. A view most railfans never get to see.

  • Strange driving cab ;) but nice video

  • transit enthusiast at 3:08

  • The statement that the Engineer made at the end is too true. Normally, it's not the crews fault, seeing as it takes over a mile for a train to stop, especially at this speed. But on a lighter note:

    3:08

    I'M SO OUTTA HERE!

  • That looks like a really cluttered and uncomfortable driving desk.

  • anyone who drives around crossing arms should go to jail for a long long time.. its just stupid

  • I've ridden so many times on this same mailine on Amtrak. Always enjoyed riding in the Budd Heritage Fleet cars. Roomy, large windows, and much better riding qualities than the Amfleet "Amcans". I still remember when it was double-tracked between Tampa Union Station and Orient Rd. Rumor is that if we get commuter rail, it may be double tracked again thru to Orlando.

  • @metroliner89 Yes, it's an F40. Look at the windshields inside of the cab when the camera zooms away. Those angles are unmistakable. I miss these tough old workhorses.

  • @ACLTony Yeah it's easy to tell when those windows are seen!

  • AWESOME

  • хочу такие модные очки.Сколько стоят в США?

  • Finally I get to see whats inside the CSX Cab in real life...Thank you so much for posting this video. All types of Diesel Locomotives are my absolute favorite and Steams.

  • Is the totally obnoxious sheer overuse of the horn at every level crossing simply due to the large amount of moron drivers that reside in the US?

  • Yes, because if they don't blow the horn enough and they hit someone the engineer is personally responsible! The RR won't take the blame.

  • @produKtNZ

In the US, most railways abide by the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), which was decided upon way back in the early days of the railroads. Back then, grade crossings were not that frequent, and it was decided that it is more important to make darn sure anybody trying to cross heard the train coming. So, they decided that the whistle signal long long short long was a good way to let people know you were about to go over a crossing, and you gotta blow that for every crossing...

  • i got to ride in the original amtrak f40s!they were awesome to ride in at 80mph!!!!i got to have like 15 cab rides before amtrak got rid of the f40s off there active roster!what a neat experience!to bad they scrapped most of them!:(

  • Wow you lucky man!

  • danny, cool video, and i copmpletley agree with the engineer on that train, im going to work for CEMR one day, and i hope no morons touch my train. or try to beat, then ill lay on that dam horn till i fall asleep on the handle lol.

  • DAMN THATS FAST! for a..... idk, passenger? lets put it that way, when i drove a passenger train, they only allowed 10 mph :(

  • Comment removed

  • When I whistled for some crossings, I ended the long, long, short, loooong just as we reached the crossing.

This gave MORE warning, EARLIER, where it mattered.

For non signalled crossings, it is important to give even more warning, starting earlier.

For crossings with signals, horn is not needed.

At crossings where there was no one at or approaching the crossing, I opened the horn valve just enough to be much softer but "legal".

  • For crossings with signals, horn is not needed? Lol yeah right dude, tell that to the FRA and see how fast you get fined

  • Flashing red (o)=(o) and bells are not enough warning for you?

They are enough warning for all the intelligent people I know.

No need for horn blasting everywhere, into homes and businesses, etc.

    What a poorly done video.

  • That doesn't change the fact that its the law. Enough warning for me might not be enough warning for the person talking on their cell phone not paying attention. There's a million different scenarios.

  • One on their cell phone cannot see the big flashing red lights?

Wow! Not smart enough to live.

  • its called liability. Are you not smart enough to catch on to the fact that its federal law that they have to blow the whistle at all grade crossings regardless if there is lights or not (unless its in a quietzone). If they do not comply it is punishable by fines from the FRA. Grasp the concept dude, Its the LAW!!

  • Yes.

I know it is a law.

    A ridiculous law.

    We should outlaw morons.

    Actually, nature does. (Darwinism)

  • Well i can at least agree with part of that (Darwinism).

  • Great video man and aweosme shots from the cab!! Does the CSX Office Car Special still operate in tampa?

  • great video!

  • No i czego tak trąbi tym haziajstwem pojeb jeden.

  • I'm actually not really a fan of that particular K5LA. K5LA's in general are my favorite horn but that one sound very weak IMO. Maybe it was just the recording but ya.

  • lol imagine a little kid going in, pushing the driver down and fiddleing with the controls so throttle full, reverser forward, and all breaks off.

  • The Engineer was a RoadForeman of Engines down in Fla., that returned back to the seatbox. A good RoadForeman and a good Engineer.........carry on Biscuit my friend .

  • Yeah. CSX bought 4 of them from Amtrak

  • very nice!!!!

  • Nice leslie!!!

  • it's a Nathan

  • ohhh...sorry,i don't know any other horn but leslie,i a m from croatia...

  • hey, no problem, yes this is the well known K5LA, found on many passenger and some freight locomotives.

  • Definitely a Nathan Airchime K5LA, budd.

  • @zagi988zap THAT IS A NATHAN AIRCHIME K5LA!!!!!!

  • ok,i got it!!!!!

  • wow, nice video! Arent there supossed to be railfans at every crossing? LOL

  • Looks like CSX has good track maintenance in the Florida area.

  • I love that K5LA on that CSXT #9992!!!!

  • nice F40PH

  • I don't think Ive ever seen a csx train go that fast!!!

  • Well they were transporting passengers not the same ol freight

  • Superior video! I saw this set yesterday in of all places, Bound Brook, New Jersey! Love this, lots of K5LA horn, 5*.

  • Good video.

I'm glad we have closed crossings in Scotland. Those open road crossings would give me a heart attack.

  • oh yeah - everything is safe at less than 79mph - FRA is a bunch of fools for that one!

  • cool

  • Some of the best dang crew communication I've ever seen, very well done, getting authority into the form b, making sure he had a correct on the readback, engineer focusing on running the train and acknowledging signals --- makes me feel good a crew taking care of business on the rails----and no i'm not a manager, im a conductor/cutback engineer just giving respect to a crew where respect is due!!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!

  • Safety critical comunication is all part of the job on the railroad/railway nowadays. If not, it should be. All our SC coms in the UK network is recorded and analised. But yeah, good job!.

  • @chytown2k i agree iam not affiliated with the rairoad at all iam a railfan and nothing like a good engineer.thats got to be one of csx main guys to go to when they need a good engineer, hope you hear this biscuit you are a one of a kind engineer, hope you stay with csx for a long time

  • Great Cabride video

  • i remember riding one of these runnin 105 about 15 years ago. F40's are the bomb!! wish they still had them..

  • @CNKILLERCLOWN Same here. Loved F40s.

  • @arrowguy173 Ok, but if you've ever had to maintain them, they're like old chevys. You absolutely have to do the maintenance or they get cranky really fast. Especially when it's hot and they decide to lose their coolant. They're loud too. I really do like the P 40, 42 better. It's much quieter but not good if you're on track gang because they're on you before you know it. They're smoother and I love the cruise control. it's nice climbing the passes faster than 30 mph, stuck in 8.

  • Dang thats fairly fast operating speed for the number of grade crossings he was encountering. They really keep the freight trains slow around here until they pass the last major grade crossing.

  • Keep in mind that that wasn't freight. It's their business train. Also probably a good reason they're doing everything by the book, seeing as how the person who's signature is on their pay check may very well be aboard that train.

That part at the end, great interview with "Biscuit" there

  • the best cab video i've seen. show some more of him talking, that was interesting.

  • I can hear him getting permission into a form B. But the foreman won't get back to him on the repeat...story of my life.

  • they dont. its a special operation lifesaver train. they only run special trains with passenger equipment.

  • cool video!

  • So this is how the rich people live. How fortunate.

  • WHAT CITY IS THIS

  • Tampa, Plant City, Lakeland, Auburndale, all in Florida.

  • @JT872 F40PH LAND

  • Great video! Enjoyed watching it! Adding it to my favorites. Keep up the good work.

  • Right at the end of this video shows what the engineer is stuck with if he hits a car. That is why we should NEVER try to beat a train at a grade crossing.

  • What does OCS mean?

  • Office Car Special

  • How did you pull off getting in the cab?

  • cool video awesome horn action five stars nice job.

  • Man i love that meet!!!

  • Pentrex would be scared if you made videos. Yours are great!

  • Very hard core!

  • love the k5la

  • Sharks and trains....havnt heard of either leaping out of their environment and killing anybody..but someone gets ate by a shark in the water off the beach, the shark must die, someone gets grounded up into metloaf metal going around some cross bucks and the engineer gets 2 piss in a cup with a magnifying glass up his ass...

  • LOL WTF?

  • man i love the F-40s. great stuff man. well done. i use to ride them alot as a teen on the Seaboard between Raleigh-Richmond. now im stuck driving catfish. lol great vid bud.

  • Since when did SBD have F40s?

  • What is operation lifesaver?

    Evacuation?

  • Operation Lifesaver is an education program where trains travel around and their crews and others on board teach people how to act safely around railroad tracks.

Most of what they teach is probably simple common sense, but a lot of children, teens and even adults lack that as far as train safety is concerned.

  • A special awareness programme to warn people of the dangers of trains if they try to outrun them or play the fool on the tracks.

  • Dude its RAW video which means its un edited. so get over it. If you can do better than more power to ya but how much video from the cab of the CSX F40's have you seen?

  • I wish all conductors would stay alert and attentive like that fellow. No Sleepy Head there. Good Job Mr. Conductor!!!!

  • Nice video Thank you

  • The engineer is absolutely right that if something happens to someone of the track at the crossing, the crew can't do anything.

    Although, nice video!

  • nice vid. that guy wasn't that dumb I n'joy standing close. not when the trains doing 60mph

  • "what a dumbass at 307"

Why is he a dumbass? How is that any different from people standing curbside when cars, trucks and buses are flying by?

  • well how many people have you hit while driving a car, truck or bus???? Bet you can stop alot faster in your car, truck or bus than we can with a couple of dash 9's and 25,000 tons of coal.

  • that was answering JTinGR's question, btw.

  • skyav8r, a train is on a fixed path. Standing near the tracks is a LOT less dangerous than standing on a curb where cars, trucks and buses can veer off course at any moment and mow you down. I haven't heard of any trains derailing lately and mowing someone down who was standing 5-10 feet from the rails. People are just more dramatic about standing near a train because it's so big and intimidating. It's less dangerous to stand 5-10 feet from a train than on a busy street corner.

  • ok thanks for clarifying that for me.

  • Stand very close and they can suck u off the platform I heard.

I hate getting sucked off near the railway.

  • Ah, I wish railroads would still run passenger trains. CSX's paint job looks so COOL on the F40's.

  • I agree with you Veronica. But passenger train operation is so heavily burdened with liabilities and headaches, add to that it's generally a money losing proposition. Hence, that's why the we have Amtrak. At least now there is more support for it.

  • @ACLTony

As an Australian looking from the outside and looking through the history of Amtrak. Perhaps it might have been better for the US Government to cover the losses via subsidy and all rolling stock purchases and still have the Class 1's run the show. It is ironic that this is the method that is used in the Privatised world in the EU/AU. From what I understand the reason that Amtrak took so long to get on its feet was due to non railroaders being hired in its early days in management

  • Nice sounding K5!

  • I love csx awesome video

  • what a dumbass at 307

  • that used to be the 390 huuh

  • ok thanks

  • what type of engine were you riding in??

  • It was an F40.

  • STAY OFF THE TRACKS!!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL HORN BABY!!! OMG Let it wail

  • Remember those words at the end Mr. Idiot who almost got run over at 80mph.

  • run mr. photographer on tracks!

  • run mr. photographer on tracks!

  • Nice Video eh biscuit? ahaha!

  • AmtrakSilverMeteor-the horn is a K5La.

  • Biscuit! lol

  • Now do all K5LA's make the exact same sound? If I bought a K5LA, compresser, and valve, could I make the exact same sound? Thank You

  • Pretty much the same, but it depends on tuning. Amtrak's horns are "all bells forward" whereas most freight engine applications are "3 forward-2 rearward".

You would have to get an ex-Amtrak horn to get the EXACT sound. Plus, you won't endear yourself to neighbors much with such a project. :-))

  • There is a video somewhere on here of a guy who put one on his pick-up. That would be fun in traffic.

  • Im sorry but through all the comments, I could not find out: what type of horn is this?

  • I imagine it's a K5LA or whatever model that Amtrak uses, since those are ex-Amtrak units.

  • thank you

  • you can still see the amtrak number on the controls looks like it was the 390 at one time

  • I got to ride in the cab of a GP18 on a shortline RR a few years ago. It was so awesome!!!

  • I'm an engineer myself and YES it makes u sick when idiots try to beat the train. Even at 10mph it will take a bit to stop 20-25 loaded tankcars. These guys are well over 70mph. Train vs car: NO CHANCE!!! Think safe people. Make our jobs easier. Thanks!

  • who do you work for my family worked for the missouri pacific and the rock island and i want to be a conductor i'm rail fan can make arrangment's for ryde in the cab

  • It is so true at what the driver says at 5:17

  • blowin dat horn look like SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!

    YEE-HAW!

  • awsome video

  • sweet vid, was pretty intense up in that cab

  • How did you get into the cab?

  • It was an Operation Lifesaver special. CSX invited us to ride in the locomotive with them to shoot the view out the windshield.

I wish we'd have brought a tripod, though. But there were six of us crammed in that cab.

    DH

  • I've seen this video before. I love the K5LA! Sounds just like the F40s that used to run on Amtrak.

  • That's Because THEY ARE the F40s that used to run on Amtrak

  • ...and WHERE have you seen it before? I own the original field tapes and , to my knowledge, it was never broadcast or duplicated. just curious.

    DH

  • do u wuck for csx

  • when was this?

  • February 2002 or thereabouts.

  • notch 8 damn

  • I like the engineer's name.

  • how fast are they aloud to go beacuse they are rollin

  • Clean horn, He loves it far to much!

  • I wish I could do that!
