WOW. I really feel I am the engineer at the throttle of the F40PH hauling THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR my favorite train. As RIO GRANDE slogan says THRU THE ROCKIES NOT AROUND THEM.
Man I love workin the 26L's, I damn the fastbrake!!!, cant hear the damn air!,we here on Queensland Rail in NSW Australia, cant use our cell phones whist driving our engines, and it makes it hard sometimes to get a hold of the train controller on our radios sometimes, nice video man.
Wonderful K5LA horns. Don't know why but there's something really special about a clean, good working K5 on an F40. They just don't sound the same on the 500 series 32BWH or P 40, 42 series, although those aren't bad either. Great video. Thanks.
You'll notice that none of you got any answers to your questions. That's because these are railSNOBS, not railfans. They are high minded and uppity and don't like railfans. Don't waste your time trying to ask questions or talk to them. Instead, get a rifle, go to an isolated spot by a rail, and snipe the cruel bastards.
@salemcripple - No, it's office car. We called 'em business cars. It's a nicely appointed passenger type car with amenities for railroad big-shots to tour the routes. They often will take along big customers to see where their freight is going.
As an Operator, I had to clear the rails of freight trains far in advance of an Amtrak train. Turns out there was a special car in the train with the Amtrak President's wife aboard. She apparently didn't want to see commoners along the way.
@CSX4772 - On our line, it was a special annual event. Relatives and family of railroaders were invited, so they could see the safety issues faced by railroad worker family members.
The statement that the Engineer made at the end is too true. Normally, it's not the crews fault, seeing as it takes over a mile for a train to stop, especially at this speed. But on a lighter note:
I've ridden so many times on this same mailine on Amtrak. Always enjoyed riding in the Budd Heritage Fleet cars. Roomy, large windows, and much better riding qualities than the Amfleet "Amcans". I still remember when it was double-tracked between Tampa Union Station and Orient Rd. Rumor is that if we get commuter rail, it may be double tracked again thru to Orlando.
@metroliner89 Yes, it's an F40. Look at the windshields inside of the cab when the camera zooms away. Those angles are unmistakable. I miss these tough old workhorses.
Finally I get to see whats inside the CSX Cab in real life...Thank you so much for posting this video. All types of Diesel Locomotives are my absolute favorite and Steams.
In the US, most railways abide by the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), which was decided upon way back in the early days of the railroads. Back then, grade crossings were not that frequent, and it was decided that it is more important to make darn sure anybody trying to cross heard the train coming. So, they decided that the whistle signal long long short long was a good way to let people know you were about to go over a crossing, and you gotta blow that for every crossing...
i got to ride in the original amtrak f40s!they were awesome to ride in at 80mph!!!!i got to have like 15 cab rides before amtrak got rid of the f40s off there active roster!what a neat experience!to bad they scrapped most of them!:(
danny, cool video, and i copmpletley agree with the engineer on that train, im going to work for CEMR one day, and i hope no morons touch my train. or try to beat, then ill lay on that dam horn till i fall asleep on the handle lol.
That doesn't change the fact that its the law. Enough warning for me might not be enough warning for the person talking on their cell phone not paying attention. There's a million different scenarios.
its called liability. Are you not smart enough to catch on to the fact that its federal law that they have to blow the whistle at all grade crossings regardless if there is lights or not (unless its in a quietzone). If they do not comply it is punishable by fines from the FRA. Grasp the concept dude, Its the LAW!!
I'm actually not really a fan of that particular K5LA. K5LA's in general are my favorite horn but that one sound very weak IMO. Maybe it was just the recording but ya.
The Engineer was a RoadForeman of Engines down in Fla., that returned back to the seatbox. A good RoadForeman and a good Engineer.........carry on Biscuit my friend .
Some of the best dang crew communication I've ever seen, very well done, getting authority into the form b, making sure he had a correct on the readback, engineer focusing on running the train and acknowledging signals --- makes me feel good a crew taking care of business on the rails----and no i'm not a manager, im a conductor/cutback engineer just giving respect to a crew where respect is due!!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!
Safety critical comunication is all part of the job on the railroad/railway nowadays. If not, it should be. All our SC coms in the UK network is recorded and analised. But yeah, good job!.

@arrowguy173 Ok, but if you've ever had to maintain them, they're like old chevys. You absolutely have to do the maintenance or they get cranky really fast. Especially when it's hot and they decide to lose their coolant. They're loud too. I really do like the P 40, 42 better. It's much quieter but not good if you're on track gang because they're on you before you know it. They're smoother and I love the cruise control. it's nice climbing the passes faster than 30 mph, stuck in 8.
Dang thats fairly fast operating speed for the number of grade crossings he was encountering. They really keep the freight trains slow around here until they pass the last major grade crossing.
Keep in mind that that wasn't freight. It's their business train. Also probably a good reason they're doing everything by the book, seeing as how the person who's signature is on their pay check may very well be aboard that train.
That part at the end, great interview with "Biscuit" there
Right at the end of this video shows what the engineer is stuck with if he hits a car. That is why we should NEVER try to beat a train at a grade crossing.
Sharks and trains....havnt heard of either leaping out of their environment and killing anybody..but someone gets ate by a shark in the water off the beach, the shark must die, someone gets grounded up into metloaf metal going around some cross bucks and the engineer gets 2 piss in a cup with a magnifying glass up his ass...

Pretty much the same, but it depends on tuning. Amtrak's horns are "all bells forward" whereas most freight engine applications are "3 forward-2 rearward".
You would have to get an ex-Amtrak horn to get the EXACT sound. Plus, you won't endear yourself to neighbors much with such a project. :-))
I'm an engineer myself and YES it makes u sick when idiots try to beat the train. Even at 10mph it will take a bit to stop 20-25 loaded tankcars. These guys are well over 70mph. Train vs car: NO CHANCE!!! Think safe people. Make our jobs easier. Thanks!

Even so, sometimes people try to beat the train, even going around gates. At the end, the engineer tells of the crew's reaction to that.

Is the totally obnoxious sheer overuse of the horn at every level crossing simply due to the large amount of moron drivers that reside in the US?
produKtNZ 1 year ago
Yes, because if they don't blow the horn enough and they hit someone the engineer is personally responsible! The RR won't take the blame.

When I whistled for some crossings, I ended the long, long, short, loooong just as we reached the crossing.
This gave MORE warning, EARLIER, where it mattered.
For non signalled crossings, it is important to give even more warning, starting earlier.
For crossings with signals, horn is not needed.
At crossings where there was no one at or approaching the crossing, I opened the horn valve just enough to be much softer but "legal".
robertgift 2 years ago
For crossings with signals, horn is not needed? Lol yeah right dude, tell that to the FRA and see how fast you get fined
bigredf150 1 year ago

AmtrakSilverMeteor-the horn is a K5La.

Biscuit! lol

Now do all K5LA's make the exact same sound? If I bought a K5LA, compresser, and valve, could I make the exact same sound? Thank You
AmtrakSilverMeteor 3 years ago
Pretty much the same, but it depends on tuning. Amtrak's horns are "all bells forward" whereas most freight engine applications are "3 forward-2 rearward".
You would have to get an ex-Amtrak horn to get the EXACT sound. Plus, you won't endear yourself to neighbors much with such a project. :-))

There is a video somewhere on here of a guy who put one on his pick-up. That would be fun in traffic.

Im sorry but through all the comments, I could not find out: what type of horn is this?
AmtrakSilverMeteor 3 years ago
I imagine it's a K5LA or whatever model that Amtrak uses, since those are ex-Amtrak units.
distantsignal 3 years ago
thank you

you can still see the amtrak number on the controls looks like it was the 390 at one time

I got to ride in the cab of a GP18 on a shortline RR a few years ago. It was so awesome!!!

Thanks!

sweet vid, was pretty intense up in that cab
railmogul2 4 years ago 3
How did you get into the cab?
amproductions1 4 years ago
It was an Operation Lifesaver special. CSX invited us to ride in the locomotive with them to shoot the view out the windshield.
I wish we'd have brought a tripod, though. But there were six of us crammed in that cab.

I've seen this video before. I love the K5LA! Sounds just like the F40s that used to run on Amtrak.
RCdash9 4 years ago
That's Because THEY ARE the F40s that used to run on Amtrak
Ham549 4 years ago 3
...and WHERE have you seen it before? I own the original field tapes and , to my knowledge, it was never broadcast or duplicated. just curious.
