Do your trees ever suffer from root rot? since the soil is so moist all the time i think they would? Most bonsai are reccommended to use very loose soil for good drainage, sphagnum moss provides very little, i mean you've proven it works just well but it makes me wonder, people dont reccomend normal potting soil because of the water retention but sphagnum moss would actually retain the saim or maybe more than normal soil, just curious
Jerry, I realise now it's the vertical glazed green stripes that distract me from the tree composition, I feel like I need to wipe them off or some thing, and in fact they are quite hypnotic for me. But Im happy for you, because to be honest I didnt think you would be able to create such a great composition with those stones, but it really is nice, you have a good eye for detail. Right I think Ive said enough on this video and look forward to your next.
That has turned out to be a lovely looking group planting with those delicate Ming trees Jerry. It's only a personal observation but I think that pot spoils it for me, I'm sorry but it's ugly to me, please don't ake this personal because the planting is beautiful, I just think it would have looked better in a beige coloured shallow oval pot. In a professionally made pot this would be outstanding. Another great video, thanks.
Hi, No problem. Everyone has their right to their opinion. I respect yours, and if that is how you feel, I am glad you are able to express it and welcome discussion. I happen to like the pot. Many feet that pots should be background and not the star. I tend to agree, but I like this pot and that's my opinion. I am glad we can disagree in a civil and logical manner. At least you express the reasons you don't like it and make a valid argument. (Cont.)
Its nice when one can express an opinion without offensive vernacular thrown at you, especially when someone is only conveying a personal observation, this is the reason I enjoy the narration of your videos since even beginners who are only just taking there first steps of a bonsai lifestyle, its so easy to understand your oratory account of what you achieve. ConT.
What I like most is not just how easy you yourself make it look working with sphagnum moss when re potting a tree from a soil/loam based medium to sphagnum moss, no copper/aluminium wire for securing root mass (unless to tie a tree to the pot until established, but even then you use bungee straps, which has a gentler tension around the tree trunk) because unarguably the amazing results speak for themselves. ConT.
Whats really amazing is how truly easy it really is working with sphagnum moss as apposed to first sieving, then second sieving before re potting with all my traditional bonsai soil mediums. Sphagnum moss results against the many types of traditional bonsai soil mediums from what I have witnessed through Jerrys videos and my own 25 years of experience in vegetable growing, bonsai tree care and propagation and various orchids to mention just some plants Ive grown. ConT.
In fact I have always used sphagnum moss for my orchids and hanging baskets, but after watching Jerrys results with his own trees you just cannot argue with the results and should be tried at least once by every bonsai beginner, enthusiast and even professionals and see for yourself the amazing healthy root growth and lush vegetation with beautiful flowers and fruits on some varieties. ConT.
I cannot wait until May 1st 2010 when I can start my first bonsai tree re pot and root prune into sphagnum moss as the only medium after the last of the UKs frost have gone (I hope!), the specimens I have chose are 1 Chinese Elm 25 year old and 1 Banyan fig 15/20 years old for re potting and if the results are as good as Im expecting, then the rest of my collection that need re potting this coming spring will be re potted into sphagnum moss.
Wow what a piece of SHIT.

Hi,
I would strongly suggest finding a local pottery class, perhaps at a school near you. Then you can make exactly what you want. Jerry
