@DELPHI1945 The original song with the same melody as "Love Me Tender" was called Aura Lea (Or the Maid with Golden Hair). TAura Lea was written in 1861 by George R. Poulton. This song "Cruel War" was written by Peter Yarrow & Noel "Paul" Stookey.
These three had warned us all --- yes, about the cruelty of war - and I hope all the bankers, the war merchants and their children can listen to these words -- and rethink of their profit from war and from banks. Peace is what life is all about.
"They will give me shiny medals They'll call "the killing brave" But I'd rather hold my darling son Then fill a thousand graves And there's many a man that I will kill That I never known at all O listen, oh listen to me Johnny And heave my story well There's no glory in the killing Just the agony of hell" From another version just as old I believe.
Thanks for posting! it is one of the first songs that i learned how to sing, my momma taught me listening to it on record and then cassette and finally CD. it is a sad song but has good memories for me of spending time with my momma.
You are very welcome and it is really nice to hear how your mom taught you this song. I am glad it has brought back good memories. God Bless ! ~~~ Chuck
my sister sang this to me when I was 4, my daughter will be four this month, I sang it to her, I am 47 and I remembered it all. then came to find it, Yeah! thanks for posting, Cindra, thanks for singing this to me as a child in the 60's to pass on to Julia. I told her u sang it to me.
the original words are avaiable by google THE CRUEL WAR IS RAGING on website "Democratic Underground com", song of Revolutionnary War but not a Civil War's song.
oh the harmony in this one brings tears to my eyes. I had an album with this on it back in the 70s. Sweet, sweet, sweet.

I believe this to be a civil war song. We've been blessed with a few - one I remember by Wayne Newton called Laura Lee.

@Beck9476 Elvis did Laura Lee later on and changed the lyrics to "Love Me Tender"

If this music is listened to, it will be moved to tears.
Although it is birth after the war, in addition, war does not cease now.
If the world was peace truly, this music cannot have existed, either.
With what do human beings kill and suit?
On such the round earth.
There are. Human beings kill, and do they go from now on?

@ sweettrt ,
That is very endearing and lovely. It shows you how timeless and wonderful these songs are and how beautiful Peter Paul and Mary's performances were.
