By his own admission (on the Dick Cavett Show in 1979), Domingo was NEVER truly a baritone. He sang in that register early on because he didn't know how to access the tenor acuti.
That's why Domingo's Boccanegra, although respectful, was not first-rate. His climaxes in this role were those of a tenor, not a baritone. A big-voiced tenor's G above the staff is simply less exciting than that of a big-voiced baritone.

Totally beautiful. We have been blessed with voices like this and several others and this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I do not know the words, but makes no difference - the beauty is breath taking. He surely sings with the Angels.
@TorturedXeno I believe this was how the song was originally written. But you're right, it is a bit lower than Pavarotti's version of the song. I think this version is easier on the voice. Plus, Domingo always had a very dark tenor voice, close to a baritone. High notes don't come easy to him.
@salomonreyvenezolano ITS OK FOR YOU TO LIKE HIM BUT HES DEFINITELY NOT A DRAMATIC TENOR AT ALL.HES A LIRICO SPINTO AT BEST. I HEARD HIM IN PAGLIACCI ABOUT 12 YEARS AGO. HE COULD HARDLY BE HEARD . HE SOUNDS MUCH BETTER ON RECORDS BECAUSE OF STUDIO ENHANCEMENT & HE HAS A NICE QUALITY OF VOICE. IF YOU WANT TO HEAR SOME DRAMATIC STUFF TRY DEL MONACO ,VINAY,DE MURO,PICCALUGA. DOMINGO HAS A MORE VELVET QUALITY TO HIS VOICE AND MANY OF THE SPINTO ROLES ARE TOO BIG FOR HIM
@sugarbist Odd you say this, especially when all the world has had such numerous oppertunities to actually compare his voice to other "dramatic" tenor's. After all, he's one of "The Three Tenors", and when singing sandwiched between the other two...Placido belts it out like no other! And surely you aren't saying that Pavarotti isn't a dramatic tenor also. Placido not only holds his own, but surpassas all of them...hell, his record and history speaks for itself. Oh well, opinions do vary.
@StevenSWM I'm definitely saying that Pavarotti is NOT a DRAMATIC tenor.Pavarotti's signature roles are Lucia,Daughter of the Regiment,L'EsireD'amore. La Boheme,Rigoletto, which are all lyric roles.Because of the squillo in his voice&good facility with his high notes he was able to sing some spinto roles. But for the most part he really didnt do that well in Aida Chenier Trovatore Ernani&Pagliaci, etc. This does not diminish the greatness that Pavarotti achieved in his career(continued)
@StevenSWM I would say that all 3 tenors are lyric spinto at best which leaves categories above them which are Spinto, Corelli,Tucker Lauri Volpi Caruso in this category&Dramatic with DelMonaco,Vinay,Piccaluga,Paoli,Tamagno&Zenatello to name a few in this category. There is heldon tenor above this, but i'm not going there.The3 tenors could not compete with the dramatic tenors I mention here neither in size of voice nor dramatic Impact.Zenatello&Del Monaco were Monsters when it came to Otello
@sugarbist I will definitely yield to your richer experience on this matter. Like an art critic when asked about the authenticity of a certain masterpiece, he said, “While I cannot duplicate a single brushstroke myself, I do know great artwork when I see it!” I do know a little about music, sound, voice clarity, range, etc., but not so much in the classical direction. Truly, I didn’t know classical singers got any more “dramatic range” to their voices, than the likes of Domingo and Pavarotti.
@StevenSWM A tenor may be great without being in a dramatic category,asGigli was& at times DiStefano was great, so it really shouldn't diminish the status of a singer just because he's lyric or lyric spinto. You can look up the names of the tenors I mentioned& see what you think, Even though I have my favorites,I try to search for other tenors I may enjoy or find interesting.I Try Barioni,Campagnano,Gino Penno just to get away from The more famous name tenors& at times I find it refreshing Enjoy
TheInquisitive4Ever you're stupid an ignorant, study music and opera before writing things that u don't know.. Limited voice Domingo? ah ah ah..u made me laugh thanks
Another beautiful Italian song decimated by Mingo. This hispanic is on a mission to decimate the Italian repertoire which his throaty, hooted, pushed and limited voice.
@Rosieisapunk1200 He began as a baritone then progressed to tenor roles, now he has returned to his roots as a baritone. The secret to a lengthy and wonderful career!!
Shadow-I can understand why you like MINGO. I just watched your video in which you attempt to sing O Sole Mio. Feel free to sing it in the shower but I highly doubt you can make a living with such a limited vocal ability. Let's hope your song writing and composing skills a far better for your own salvation.
As you can hear here, MINGO has a problem with producing a glorious A4 even in a studio recording. This is a pedestrian rendition of an otherwise beautiful Canzone Napoletana. MINGO, with his hooted and throaty voice, should be singing mariachi songs and rancheras. Note that his first best selling album was a pop one! lol
A good number of hispanic tenors have a a throaty, hooted, monochromatic and pushed sound, e.g Domingo, Carreras, Villazon, Vargas, Cura etc. There are exceptions (and very beautiful exceptions) too such as Fleta, Kraus and Aragall. The ones I call "hispanic" have a voice (and regrettably a technique) which is remotely not suitable to the Italian repertoire!
A tenore dramatico doesn't necessarily have a hooted, throaty and pushed voice. In fact, he should never ever have such a voice. One can have a darker voice but it can still be brilliant, resonant and full with harmonics. Go check teh 3 tenors I just mentioned. MINGO (where's the Do?)'s vocal production was always strangled.
Bullshit! Domingo and Corelli's voice are different. Corelli has a superb spinto voice. Domingo has SQUAT. Furthermore, Corelli has a superb technique and incredible vocal range. Domingo has neither. Domingo started out as a tenore lyrico and was outclassed by Pava. Then he morphed himself into a tenore spinto/dramatico and ended up being a midget as compared to the liked of Corelli, del Monaco, Tucker etc.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Baritone? No shit Sherlock! The only reason he morphed himself into a tenor (and a highly overrated one at that) is by over extending his vocal range which resulted in a hooted, throaty and pushed sound. I guessing he did that for the money as tenors get paid much better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The only shitting (using your tasteless and feeble English) is done by Domingo. He's decimating this beautiful Italian song with his hispanic sound, which is troaty, hooted, monochromatic and pushed. Listen to Pavarotti's rendition. You'll get an idea on how it should be sung.
His pronunciation is impeccable. Why is it that people say it's a Hispanic sound whenever they refer to him. I hate that. He is a dramatic tenor. His tone is darker more like a baritone. Thats the voice type. He's one of the greatest tenors of the last 30 years. If you like Pavarotti it's because you like the sweeter sound of a Lyric or Spinto tenor. Franco Corelli who is also Italian has a similar quality as Dominingo and his rendition of this song is amazing.
his "hispanic" sound actually captures this song very well. after all, he's a baritone before becoming a tenor! and he actually has a sweeter tone than Pavarotti ever had, he sounds excellent here
So, do you just try to be a dick? Or in case you hadn't noticed, Domingo was and is considered one of the best tenors in world. And he's a class act. And as far as cuttin' other people down: really, it's a disgrace to this song. Go comment on a death metal band.
I was attending opera at the most reputable venues before your poor excuse of a father daddy shagged your poor excuse of a mother mommy while she was ovulating as a result of which you "the accident" were born. Mingo is nothing but a used car salesman (a very good one at that) for any opera house who would pay him enough. His 138 roles is attests to his artistic prostitution. Get a clue you little fiddlestick.
