@DCOME94 And then you talk smack lol. Lame anyways there is a kick like the one above in tkd and there's another others similar to other MT kicks. I say similar cause it's not exactly like those. Not all dojangs teach it as a standard repetition kick. Hell the kicks are in poomse.
To be honest I don't like explaining this to other people because it's such a frequent bitch to do. I do TKD/MT/BOXING etc. People ignorantly rag on TKD. The same people think I'm doing MT when I'm doing TKD.
is it a Muay Thai kick??? I made this kick myself in 1999 when i was fighting in a Taekwondo tournament. Pretend to do a front kick and then twist my standing leg and rotate my hips to gain more power then make it a round kick. Hah, wat a coincidence XD
You guys are the best. I've learned so much from the vids and I really appreciate the fact that you guys are generous enough to provide us with Jiu-Jitsu knowledge and now striking. I'll forever be a fan. Thanks to all the guys at submissions 101.
I used this kick whilst sparring in my advanced Krav Maga class and I nailed it (also confusing.the shit out of people) every time. It's an awesome kick!
How much weight/momentum are you putting forward, and when? The way i developed these are more like a jab in a sence, but im wondering if it would be better to slow it down with more power by leaning in more...
FYI this isn't a typical muay thai headkick. It's what's called a brazilian or question mark kick. Doesn't really pack a punch but is really accurate and surprising =)
@dralol its more of a snap type kick. not as much power as a full roundhouse, but its accurate, comes from nowhere and great to use to surprise your opponent. a guy i used to spar with did these alot...very sneaky.
i've struggled with kicks for years and that was a great piece of info right there, i always tried to take my leg out to the side but ratter like he said bring it straight up the body the switch kick.
@kingstaffy you are true. It is not the traditional muay Thai kick, but it is the traditional taekwondo kick as in tkd people go into a chamber position ie bringing your knee up to kicking height in a sort of toe kick or as shown here position. Then the rotation of the hip takes place. It's done for the same purpose though, to confuse your opponent.
@MynameisAbhaySoni yeah people hate on tkd but the is used in karate as well, often called the question mark kick, both because its confusing and shaped like a question mark
looks cool, but you are suppose to perry the teep with the other hand and keep the hand he uses to perry at the head blocking, shouldn't work with someone who has muay thai experience
@OVERCAPITALIZE brazilians have awesome muay thai fighters and warriors. But it is not called a brazilian kick, it is a muay thai head kick. brazilians love muay thai and i dont think they would disrespect thailand's martial art by calling it a brazilian kick. Even shogun has muay thai tattooed on his shin in thai letters.
@MursuTheMan Brazil was discovered in the 1500's. Thailand was formed in the 1200's and they already had this kick. I would go with calling it a Thai kick. Any other name is simply stolen property. Just because a Thai guy is rolling around putting armbars on people doesn't mean that it is Thai Jiujitsu.
good lord these guys legs are like tree trunks! I'd hate to get kicked by them, ouch.
thanks for the video btw. I have some old videos of Glaube Feitosa pulling off the first kick many time with devistating results, (I though it was called a Brazilian high kick? could be wrong) "switch-kick sounds better imo. Nothing against Brazil.
The left counter is kinda scary though. If someone does block they can easily counter with an overhand right and you will be off balance, which will knock you down.
No. The regular roundhouse kick in karate and TKD's turning kick the knee travels inline with the hip all the way from the start. Ofc, you kick with the toe sole or instep in those arts too.
In MT high kick, the knee comes up *exactly* as if you are doing a front kick, i.e. closed hips almost all the way, only near the top of the knee's arc do you twist hips & continue the shin into and DOWN on the opponent. Ofc you strike with the shin, preferably lower shin too.
Best explanation of MT high kick I've seen. It is very different from regular high kicks in karate and tkd, though it is present as a variation in both, of course.
Cool video, though very unexpected on this channel. I supposed it was due to the high quality of the content. :)
Lol of course all the TKD kids get sensitive and call this a rip off.

@tylerhan2000 no. a roundhouse is aimed at the side of the body (ribs). High kick is aimed at their head. Both kicks use their instep and their shin.
