  • good shit this.

  • I love this show anyway. But Kevin Kline and crew do one of the best cat like treads I've seen

  • Best and funniest song in the musical, Gilbert and Sullivan did a great job

  • incredible

  • This is a true gem! Thanks so much for the post!

  • Bravo! Bravo!!!

  • This always seems to be the biggest and best song of the show every time I've seen it...the audience loves it and gets into it so much

  • Kevin Kline is epic in this. It really makes me miss my opera classes.

  • silent burglary FAIL

  • Must say there's a lot of swash in Kevin Kline's buckle... mmmmm.....

  • Although the sound quality is better in the movie version, I prefer this one. The presence of the audience gives it a more lively feel.

  • I swear, Kevin Kline has thighs of steel...

  • @mamdavpm Steel can't do that. It is too stiff. I don't know what substance you could use in that metaphor, but steel is certainly the wrong one.

  • @vonnycav rubber perhaps

  • 97 likes and 0 dislikes. That's really saying something (note: I wrote this comment on Saturday, June 11.)

  • out of all of the pirates of Penzance musicals ive seen, i have to say the Australian version with Jon English is the best of them all!

  • I went to school with 1/10 of the cast.

  • can i buy this on dvd

  • @BOOBMIT Yes, you can! I own this production on DVD. You should be able to get this off Amazon. Its great!

  • 2:25, the guy wasn't supposed to do that lol

  • What is the DVD if this performance called? I am extremely interested!!!

  • Brilliant!

  • 0:18 is a dramatic pirate moment!

  • This brings back memories of performing this for my senior year back in `06. I played the Sergeant of Police , and everytime we sang ``Tarantura!'' we poke our heads out of this coffin that had Sullivan written on it. Good times.

  • is it wrong for me to fall in love with kevin kline in this number? =]

  • Oh how I wish I could have seen this live

  • Happy B-Day Arthur Sullivan

  • Come, friends, who plough the sea, truce to navigation, take another station, let's vary piracy with a little burglary...

    Awesome!

  • I love this due to the reaction of the audience. There's nothing like seeing a Broadway musical live...

  • Were doing this play..... Im the Pirate King!!!!!! =D IM soooo excited!!!

  • Were doing this play..... Im the Pirate King!!!!!! =D IM soooo excited!!!

  • Were doing this play..... Im the Pirate King!!!!!! =D IM soooo excited!!!

  • frederick is still Rex Smith?

  • @Thriller94 yes he is!! =D I adore his voice

  • lol this song makes me laugh. it's definitely the most known song from this musical. the middle school in town put on Pirates of Penzance Junior today, sadly it was't near as entertaining or strong as this, but still amusing =P

  • No, this just illustrates how wrong you can get the genius of G&S. They need not the mugging, the gurning or the pratfalls. They're much funnier played straight...and then the music soars!

  • Valid point.. It depends on the audience really.. Some need the in-your-face comical style. Whereas the intellectuals will always see the subtle humour that G&S weave into Pirates..

  • This illistrates the magic of Broadway and shows the distinct difference between it and the 1983 film version. You can see the wonderful chemistry between Kevin Klien and the rest of the cast. I wish they would bring it back!

  • Simply Amazing!

  • EPIC EPIC EPIC EPIC.

  • my highschool did this and to advertise they ran around town singing cat like tread

  • @waldoman7 That would have been awesome!

  • @waldoman7 That's such a good idea!!! I'll tell my director!!!

  • @waldoman7 That is AWESOME. When my school did this, we I often sang down tha halls as I went from class to class. Most people found it annoying, but I CARE NOT.

  • Kevin Kline catching the silent matches is a great moment :)

  • I wonder how many time they had to practice that for him to catch them.

  • I love that bit too ! Sadly , the actor singing and tossing the matches died not long after this production of AIDS .But,isnt it a happy hoot to see Kevin at the start of his amazing career ?

  • Was wondering that myself. If it had been me I'd have dropped them...repeatedly!

  • Saw it live! A most excellent experience. The whole show was great, but oh that Pirate King!

  • Kevin Kline here playing the role of the Dread Pirate Zappa xD

  • I just love Kevin Kline's dancing! :P

  • Every movement he makes in this show is a dance! You can hear the audience reaction to the cossack dance at the end though :D

  • SJC just put on a production of this and their dance was like a chorus line. It was very amusing. I miss it.

  • Our pirate king is a female baritone O.o

I'm Ruth. Ruth is the shiz!

  • absolutely fabulous!!!! I'm to see this (our local opera company) in two weeks.

  • I love this song i wasn't a pirate i was the sergeant but i loved this song

  • Superb. The policemen play it like the keystone cops. The singing awesome. Well done

  • I'm currently the Pirate King at my school and that dance at the end is killer on the thighs! Lol but it's fun nonetheless.

  • Oh god yes! Same with ours. x.x But we're auditioning at the moment.

Congrats on being the pirate king! Our musical needs more guys =] They're too scared to sing

  • Lucky git, that sounds so fun. I know this is four months on but screw it, it had to be said xD It's a lot to live up to, how did you do?

  • best song ever!!

  • i think we'll all remember for many more years gilbert's lyrics and sulivans catchty melodies

  • I love the guy's outfit on the far right at 3:12. He really stands out.

  • What's the song that the policemen sing?

  • i think its " a policemans lot is not a happy one"

  • They sing "A Policeman's Lot is Not a Happy One", and "When the Foeman Bares His Steel".

  • we're doing this in school.. except when they first go on stage (before; Let's very piracee) the first time, we whisper sing you know? like 'With cat like tread' because its all quiet..get it? lol

  • We did this in school as well, and I was cast as the Pirate King. I must say, the Russian dance he does is very taxing on the legs...

  • I think it's funnier this way, because you get immediately the contrast when they're shouting "no sound at all."

  • BEST. PERFORMANCE. EVAR.

  • Kevin Kline Just Owned This Role

  • I'm amazed at how much energy Rex Smith has in this scene! You could tell Kevin Kline was a star in the making, but Smith is energetic. Too bad he seemed to lose all that energy when they made the film a couple of years later. (Kline of course is excellent)

  • I love Rex, and Kevin. Espically like Kevins' little dance lol

  • i love the guy whos helmet covers hiis face

  • I just watched part of a clip of the movie version, and I came back here to say... I now have a long list of reasons why this clip is better, but I won't go into it. Anyone wondering need only find the clip from the film and watch it.

  • Wonderful! I loved this in the movie, and they seemed to do pretty much the same actions, but this was more intense, I think. Not sure actually what it is that I enjoyed more about this, but yes, I see why you'd recommend it.

  • Love this version! Thanks for uploading it. I now see where the 1994 Pirates production in Australia got their inspiration. :)

  • KEVIN KLINE & REX SMITH ARE FABULOUS!

  • YES THEY ARE. REXT IS HOT lol

  • AHHH hahaha!

I was Frederic in our high school production of this, and I wish I had watched this first to get pumped up... AMAZING!!!

  • i love this, i was the police cheif at my camp

  • I have this DVD. It's amazing.

  • I ove this part! it's brillant. =)

  • I'm a Pirate in my high school's version of Pirates of Penzance, i'm excited!!!!

  • I like the Jon English version as well, I think you can see here where their inspiration came from.

  • i love that version

  • @ThePenzancePirate Totally agree with you. I saw it, here, in YouTube and it's true, (I think) I like Jon English, very, but this version is good as well.

  • @ThePenzancePirate I agree. I like both too.

  • This and "When the Foeman Bares His Steel" are the funniest numbers in the show, I think. They look like they're having so much fun in this.

  • Bravo!

  • When I frist saw this Version, The Pirate King

Kept his Headband on to the End of the show,

where he going to attack standley.

  • My Favorite part of this Musical.
