This brings back memories of performing this for my senior year back in `06. I played the Sergeant of Police , and everytime we sang ``Tarantura!'' we poke our heads out of this coffin that had Sullivan written on it. Good times.
lol this song makes me laugh. it's definitely the most known song from this musical. the middle school in town put on Pirates of Penzance Junior today, sadly it was't near as entertaining or strong as this, but still amusing =P
No, this just illustrates how wrong you can get the genius of G&S. They need not the mugging, the gurning or the pratfalls. They're much funnier played straight...and then the music soars!
Valid point.. It depends on the audience really.. Some need the in-your-face comical style. Whereas the intellectuals will always see the subtle humour that G&S weave into Pirates..
This illistrates the magic of Broadway and shows the distinct difference between it and the 1983 film version. You can see the wonderful chemistry between Kevin Klien and the rest of the cast. I wish they would bring it back!
@waldoman7 That is AWESOME. When my school did this, we I often sang down tha halls as I went from class to class. Most people found it annoying, but I CARE NOT.
I love that bit too ! Sadly , the actor singing and tossing the matches died not long after this production of AIDS .But,isnt it a happy hoot to see Kevin at the start of his amazing career ?
we're doing this in school.. except when they first go on stage (before; Let's very piracee) the first time, we whisper sing you know? like 'With cat like tread' because its all quiet..get it? lol
I'm amazed at how much energy Rex Smith has in this scene! You could tell Kevin Kline was a star in the making, but Smith is energetic. Too bad he seemed to lose all that energy when they made the film a couple of years later. (Kline of course is excellent)
I just watched part of a clip of the movie version, and I came back here to say... I now have a long list of reasons why this clip is better, but I won't go into it. Anyone wondering need only find the clip from the film and watch it.
Wonderful! I loved this in the movie, and they seemed to do pretty much the same actions, but this was more intense, I think. Not sure actually what it is that I enjoyed more about this, but yes, I see why you'd recommend it.
@ThePenzancePirate Totally agree with you. I saw it, here, in YouTube and it's true, (I think) I like Jon English, very, but this version is good as well.
good shit this.

Although the sound quality is better in the movie version, I prefer this one. The presence of the audience gives it a more lively feel.

I swear, Kevin Kline has thighs of steel...
mamdavpm 7 months ago
@mamdavpm Steel can't do that. It is too stiff. I don't know what substance you could use in that metaphor, but steel is certainly the wrong one.

I think it's funnier this way, because you get immediately the contrast when they're shouting "no sound at all."
