  • talent.....what a concept.....I wish they had collaborated on an album together......their beautiful voices so compliment each other.....

  • Personally, I've never heard Phoebe's version, but this is very faithful to the Roches' original - which incidentally was produced by Robert Fripp (who you can see in the shadows - his tape recorder is more visible than Fripp himself).

  • I really love these two and I treasure their voices and the feels they convey.

  • I just love this by these great ladies. Ladies, stay away from the married men for there is no future for you. At least from the song version, the lady had a good time for what it is worth.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I REALLY love this song!!!! Heard it since I was a little girl (only Phoebe's album version), but this one is awesome to! Especially with the outstanding harmony between Ms.Phoebe & Ms.Linda!!!!

  • Thank you for posting this. I have never heard this song before, but it featured two of my fav women vocalists. The simple, straight-forward delivery and beautiful, dense harmonies actually brought a tear to my eye and reminded me of a more innocent time.

  • I vividly recall watching this on SNL; it's as astoundingly wonderful now as it was then.

  • wonderful - MUSIC!

  • I try to listen to this version but it is so slow compared to the original one with just Phoebe singing it - have to say like that version better than this

  • @hkdb2004 I've never heard the original. It's probably great.

  • RIP Phoebe. Great song and super performance. And very unexpectedly, one can see Robert Fripp from King Crimson, seated and playing guitar in the shadows stage left.

  • @bloggulator Frippertronics! Don't know if the sound guy knew what to do with it, you can't hear Fripp much. But good eye to catch him!

  • Love you Phoebe

  • Lovely, lovely, lovely. Two of the best singers in the business. So sorry that Phoebe has passed. She was always one of my favorites.

  • Bless you, Phoebe Snow. I saw this performance live on SNL and it was one of the most memorable performances I have ever seen. A live skit was interrupted for thissong and no one knew that Phoebe and Linda were coming on except producer Lorne Michaels and the set-up accompaniests. They were both magnificent.

  • Didn't ever see Linda Ronstadt as being yum back then but....she is one pretty lady.

  • @ragers66 you were a little too young when linda was in her prime.she was a stone cold fox!'yum' indeed.

  • @dobbsiancant She just didn't shake it for me then but on reflection and seeing this video.....yeah, pretty foxy alright.

  • god bless u phoebe 'it looks like snow"... thank u for a lifetime of musical deliciousness. front row at the santa monica civic auditorium, what a show! that roof still has ur musical mark on it. RIP~ phoebe n valerie rose

  • RIP Phoebe.

  • Lovely duet. I think Phoebe looks very pretty and happy here. I wish she didn't have to bear so many tragic events in her life.

  • RIP dear Phoebe...your unique and angelic voice will live on. I hope your daughter was there to welcome you to the Other Side with a fierce hug!

  • R.I.P. Phoebe. You were a part of my growing-up years, and I'll never forget the magic you made with your music. Rest well.

  • 180 west 76th street Riverside Chapel Sunday 2-5 7-9 Monday 11;00 same place To all that can attend lets show Phoebe the Love that she showed us.My love for you is infinite.

  • Their voices had a nice contrast together

  • Hard to believe this was over 30 years ago..RIP

  • This particular episode will always have a place in my heart and mind. This was the show before the very next day 5-20-1979, when I left my parents house and went out on my own. :-) Memories of that last night being someone's kid watching TV.

  • WOW!!! Great performance by both angelic voices..

  • Phoebe's voice is comforting . . . like an old friend, and it's sad that she has passed. She was a beautiful talent.

  • Keep her music alive . Buy her CD's and share with a friend or 2. I have some of her music back on cassettes ! And I still use my cassette player ! Share her on FBook and any where else to hear her beautiful voice forever !!

  • R.I.P. Phoebe - a hard life for a wonderful lady. Just imagine all she could have done if she wasn't the incredible loving mother that she was. She sing lead in the Angels' Choir now.

  • One of the best ever.

    RIP Phoebe.

  • Hey kids, this is REAL talent. See- no flashy costumes, no overt sexuality or vulgarity, no smoke and mirrors. I miss pure singing.

  • @peace2baby My thoughts exactly!

  • R.I.P Phoebe…

  • Phoebe and Linda; you are so right, "HtlSales" - so wonderful, both of them -

SO v. sad that Phoebe left us last nt. -

The gods rest that magical woman.

  • How sad to hear of Phoebe's passing. I loved her voice! In reading about it, the duet she did with Linda Rondstadt, "The Married Men," on Saturday Night Live back in the late '70's came to my mind. I so enjoyed it when I first saw it back then. I am so glad that it is here in YouTube. What a great loss for music!!

  • Perfect!

  • Both So talented RIP Pheobe. I was in love with Linda back then lol

  • Both So talented RIP Pheobe

  • wow, linda was so thin and looking good.

  • Rest In Peace Miss Phoebe Snow!!!!!

  • Thanks so much for posting. I've searched over the years; only place I could find was on SNL DVD series. Saw it on an SNL rerun mid-80s and loved it. Regret I never got to hear Phoebe perform in person. Mourning her passing this week.

  • It's odd watching this video since Phoebe and Howard Stern were very good friends right up to her death. Linda R. had words with Robin Quivers, Howard's sidekick, many years later on a late night show expressing her utter distaste for Stern and how she felt he degraded women. Phoebe was a great singer who abandoned her career for many years because of her brain-damaged child born in 1975, who she cared for as a single mother until her death in 2007.

  • yeah, I work with a chick that is always judging people by their looks, race, etc. and se has a boulder on her shoulder and doesn't get it. Check out Linda Rondstadtsinging Perfidia and then catch the reggae version with lil kim on you tube. Peace

  • Wow. Listen to these chicks sing! Both gifted singers. Smokin’s harmony.

  • This is a amzing performance of two gifted talented ladies who pretty much adored one another and share the same style of music both had done themselves through the years. Phoebe Snow is one of these few performers who marveled well doing pop & jazz and her voice perfectly matched these two together. We'll never hear another voice like it again.

  • I love her voice and how distinct it always was.

  • Perfect. Phoebe was just perfect.

  • Rip Phoebe great singer from New Jersey. I know who "lindawatcher" is and her disgusting posts are because she thinks Phoebe was "passing". Newsflash ms lindawatcher Phoebe white woman raised by her white Jewish parents. Should not matter her race. She was a devoted Mother and an awesome singer. Stop yo hating!

  • @marcellomimi Damn right!! With a personality like hers, she'll probably die alone in a mountain of couches and cats!

  • RIP Phoebe

  • rip and have safe journey and thank you for the music

  • Bravisima to both Phoebe & Linda! So hard to believe that was done in '79! Rest in peace, dear Phoebe - have fun playing with your little Valerie!

  • @Lindawatcher Grow a soul, creep.

  • Wow, what a great duet! Did Phoebe and Linda record anything in the studio?

RIP Phoebe. So sad to hear the news.

  • Yeah, you think they're using autotune? Hell no. That is 100% pure talent.

  • Beautiful- they were perfect together. Yes, it doesn't get any better.

  • RIP Ms. Phoebe. Such a beautiful angel. Thank you for my "growing up" music.

  • RIP Phoebe Snow.

  • I'm heartbroken to hear this.

  • RIP Phoebe. Yours was one of the great voices of the era.

  • Phoebe has lost her battle with illness today 4-26-11 sad very good singer from my era the 70's

    class of 1969

  • Rest in Peace Phoebe, I know your life wasn't easy. I hope this one is for you.

  • R.I.P

  • I still remember the night I originally watched this--so melodic. RIP, Phoebe.

  • wow... this is so incredibly beautiful!!

  • wow... this is so incredibly beautiful!!

  • this is fucking fantastic!

  • @DungeonSF i was 15 years old when this was recorded...

    and now, I'm 15 again

  • two amazing vocalists who also happen to be two my favourites, phoebe snow and linda ronstadt....it just doesn't get any better than this!

  • Fantastic!

  • Would love to hear Phoeboe Snow and Spaulding

  • Thanks for posting this! I have heard about it and have been trying to find it for years. Pretty good version!

  • Beautiful!!

  • Stay with us Phoebe, prayers go out too you.

  • Exquisite!!!

  • Maggie Roche wrote this great song! Long live The Roches.

  • I've heard Phoebe's version of this song on "Against the Grain". The duet w/ Linda, and the arrangement itself is stellar. The two of them would have made an awesome collaboration to music, as they have independently. I'm sure the Roches were pleased with this performance. It caught a lot of people's attention.

  • Love this thanks so much!!!

  • @dannys2222 Phoebe Snow had a daughter with very severe disabilities. Her devotion to her daughter's care is what set her career back. Her daughter passed away a few years ago. Phoebe was making a comeback when she suffered a debilitating stroke last year.

  • It's Robert Fripp sitting there on the left in the dark playing electric. There are photos of the session on the DGM website.

  • @rpscot AND U HAVE EVEN LESS WHAT BEAUTY IS!!!

  • The Truth

    1. Phoebe is not a dyke and if she was, what difference would that make?.

    2. She Admires Linda and She's NOT Jealous.

    3. She IS an amazingly beautiful woman..

    4. She is an INCREDIBLE PERFORMER, if you have the chance GO see her & see how incredible she is.

5.Main reason Phoebe's career did not go along like Linda's is due to some personal choices Phoebe made. Her daughter was born with medical issues requiring full time care. Phoebe opted to be a Mom First, Star Second.

  • @rpscot Thanks for posting this truth. Phoebe had to make personal choices to care for her child. Kudos to her. I do hope she recovers from her stroke. I haven't heard any updates on that situation. She is such a talented performer.

  • @dannys2222 Evidence please!

  • Never thought I'd be thinking this, considering how much I love this song and the two singers--but The Roches do it better....

  • @MinervaFan

Well, here you have two different scenarios...

    1. the roaches do the song regularly...hey! they wrote it, for god's sake!

    2. this recording of it is an impromptu thing that happened remarkably due to Saturday Night Live & they had maybe a week to rehearse together.

For a spur of the moment thing (and historcal one at that) it's truly genius at work!!! You should appreciate it for that reason!

You should also check out George Harrison & Paul Simon's duets on SNL, TOO!

  • @dannys2222 are you five years old? No Class...

  • I remember this performance and I have searched for it for years. Thanks so much for posting it. I love this song and their performance. The Roche Sisters did a great job on it too!!!

  • Mickster, if you are watching this, I am so smiling. This is just as good as it gets. Love............... Hickory. And bless all those who have already watched this magnificent performance and welcome to all those yet to enjoy it for the first time.

  • And Mr Robert Fripp on the sidelines working his Frippertronics!

  • THANK YOU!!!!!! I have been looking for this since it first aired years ago!! Thank You again!

  • My dear sweet Phoebe I pray daily for the recovery you so deserve! we all miss you! Get well soon!! Love Barbara...

  • this song makes me sighhhh

  • Phoebe has such a gift and has had such a hell of a life. All I can say is that she is in my prayers regularly. I love her voice! What I want to know is WHY these two didn't ever record an album together? What a treat we all have missed! The only version better than this one is the Roaches, themselves! You go Girlfriends!

  • @rpscot I could not agree more. Two fine singers and a wasted recording opportunity!

  • TOPS

    Thanks so much for uploading

  • Wow, good Christ, how fantastic was that.

  • Sometimes I feel a bit sorry for the present day kids. They will not have had 30+ years pass and then be able to revisit stuff like this with the same effect. They have no idea what it's like to not have access they way we do now. Can't relate. Perspective is a wonderful thing we should all pay close attention to.

  • Get well soon, Phoebe!

  • Linda= = = YUMMY!

  • does anybody out there have phoebes 'against the grain' album with this song along with do right woman do right man, keep a watch on the shoreline, everynight, he's not just another man etc, her best album in my opinion.......post them on here plz plz plz!!

  • @dorisplump I have all her albums, cassettes and now on CD. What would you like me to do?

  • Phoebe and Linda. It doesn't get any better.

  • @HtlSales

And Mr Robert Fripp on the sidelines working his Frippertronics!

  • @HtlSales phoebe has died today from that illness...please keep her family and fans in your prayers. please keep linda ronstadt in your prayers as well...they seem to have been such friends. RIP

  • @HtlSales phoebe has died today from that illness...please keep her family and fans in your prayers. please keep linda ronstadt in your prayers as well...they seem to have been such friends. RIP

  • Wow, what a find! It's hard to imagine seeing something like this on SNL today. Incredible duet!

  • I watched this show back in 1979 - oh, where has the time gone. I remember thinking that Pheobe blew Linda away that night. Now, I think what a treat it was to have a chance to enjoy these 2 amazing artists.

I was saddened to learn of Pheobe Snow's terrible sudden illness. My thoughts and prayers are with her. I pray for her full recovery.

  • @buffalo Ditto...we sure do hope she keeps getting weller and weller! lol

    So far, so good!

  • @buffalo Sad news to inform: Phoebe Snow passed away early this morning (4/26/11) from complications of brain hemorrhage at age 60. She will be truly missed...

  • Thanks for posting this! I agree, I never thought I'd hear this again!

  • Exquisite harmonies! I never thought I would to see this again. Thanks so much for this. Now does anyone have Linda duetting with Paul Simon on "Under African Skies", another great SNL musical moment...

  • WOW! What amazing voices!

  • Comment régénérant, vrais chanteurs chantant un grand air !

  • The Roach sisters?

  • It's the Roche sisters.

  • As a huge Linda fan, I remember watching this on TV ages ago, and hoping, hoping, hoping to see it again. Thank you for posting it!!!

  • a stellar duet...the only two who even deserve to pay tribute........ but they still cant touch the mesmerizing harmony of the ROCHE sisters..

  • I have ached to hear it again, and thank whoever made this available. This remains one of my favorite duets ever. What gifts these women share with us! cool.

  • Same here: Ive been looking for this video for decades! I remember when it was broadcast, it made a lasting impression on me. Thank you so much for posting it, the clarity is great!

  • WTF?? 2:13

    Robert Fripp!

  • @RedPetrol76 He produced a few of The Roches' albums. Maggie Roche wrote this song and the original, Fripp produced track is on their 1979 album - The Roches.

  • Can I give this more than five stars? :)

  • I've been looking for this for 30 years. I'm not kidding. I've looked through music compilations, roamed the internet for hours. I can't tell you how great it is to find this.

  • Thanks for posting both videos from this SNL show. The quality is superb. Many thanks for your effort!

  • 30 years - wow - I was sixteen. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this cut, thanks for posting it. Moving on to their other duet "Shoop Shoop Song" right now - whoo hoo!

  • Anybody read lips? I'm dying to know what Linda said to Phoebe at the end.

  • "Soloing in my traveling wedding band." Great lyric by the Roches.

  • Nice slide by Linda at 2:25 on "agony is in my mind."

  • Great observation. I noticed it, too! She's amazing.

  • Brilliant! I am so thrilled to see this performance here--and in such beautiful, crystal clear condition!

I remember the original broadcast of this SNL show; I fell absolutely in love with this stunning song and have been hoping to find either the audio or audio-video for it for a long time now.

Thank you so much, PhyllisVideoVault! Well done!! :-)

  • Usn't it amazing to watch two people who can just sing--are natural--no smoke and mirrors. Music rarely gets this good anymore. Thanks!

  • The 2 DVD's are Canciones de mi Padre and the Johnny Cash DVD - Linda sings 4 songs on it

  • Thanks Phillys! Phoebe and Linda are close friends here and now! Its so good to see these videos of a time that was Bittersweet! My best to Linda and Phoebe! Barbara

  • WOW.... I remember watching this Saturday Night Live episode when it originally aired in the late 70's... Loved it then....Still love it today!

2 of the best, most pure voices in the industry!!!

  • fantastic, love linda

  • I pulled out all my LR LP's this morning and all her CD's, and my 2 DVD's. It will be LR music all day till I go to bed! What an amazing body of work! Thanks for this oldie!
