Personally, I've never heard Phoebe's version, but this is very faithful to the Roches' original - which incidentally was produced by Robert Fripp (who you can see in the shadows - his tape recorder is more visible than Fripp himself).
I just love this by these great ladies. Ladies, stay away from the married men for there is no future for you. At least from the song version, the lady had a good time for what it is worth.
I REALLY love this song!!!! Heard it since I was a little girl (only Phoebe's album version), but this one is awesome to! Especially with the outstanding harmony between Ms.Phoebe & Ms.Linda!!!!
Thank you for posting this. I have never heard this song before, but it featured two of my fav women vocalists. The simple, straight-forward delivery and beautiful, dense harmonies actually brought a tear to my eye and reminded me of a more innocent time.
I try to listen to this version but it is so slow compared to the original one with just Phoebe singing it - have to say like that version better than this
RIP Phoebe. Great song and super performance. And very unexpectedly, one can see Robert Fripp from King Crimson, seated and playing guitar in the shadows stage left.

How sad to hear of Phoebe's passing. I loved her voice! In reading about it, the duet she did with Linda Rondstadt, "The Married Men," on Saturday Night Live back in the late '70's came to my mind. I so enjoyed it when I first saw it back then. I am so glad that it is here in YouTube. What a great loss for music!!
Thanks so much for posting. I've searched over the years; only place I could find was on SNL DVD series. Saw it on an SNL rerun mid-80s and loved it. Regret I never got to hear Phoebe perform in person. Mourning her passing this week.
It's odd watching this video since Phoebe and Howard Stern were very good friends right up to her death. Linda R. had words with Robin Quivers, Howard's sidekick, many years later on a late night show expressing her utter distaste for Stern and how she felt he degraded women. Phoebe was a great singer who abandoned her career for many years because of her brain-damaged child born in 1975, who she cared for as a single mother until her death in 2007.
yeah, I work with a chick that is always judging people by their looks, race, etc. and she has a boulder on her shoulder and doesn't get it. Check out Linda Rondstadtsinging Perfidia and then catch the reggae version with lil kim on you tube. Peace

This is a amzing performance of two gifted talented ladies who pretty much adored one another and share the same style of music both had done themselves through the years. Phoebe Snow is one of these few performers who marveled well doing pop & jazz and her voice perfectly matched these two together. We'll never hear another voice like it again.
Rip Phoebe great singer from New Jersey. I know who "lindawatcher" is and her disgusting posts are because she thinks Phoebe was "passing". Newsflash ms lindawatcher Phoebe white woman raised by her white Jewish parents. Should not matter her race. She was a devoted Mother and an awesome singer. Stop yo hating!
I've heard Phoebe's version of this song on "Against the Grain". The duet w/ Linda, and the arrangement itself is stellar. The two of them would have made an awesome collaboration to music, as they have independently. I'm sure the Roches were pleased with this performance. It caught a lot of people's attention.
@dannys2222 Phoebe Snow had a daughter with very severe disabilities. Her devotion to her daughter's care is what set her career back. Her daughter passed away a few years ago. Phoebe was making a comeback when she suffered a debilitating stroke last year.
1. Phoebe is not a dyke and if she was, what difference would that make?.
2. She Admires Linda and She's NOT Jealous.
3. She IS an amazingly beautiful woman..
4. She is an INCREDIBLE PERFORMER, if you have the chance GO see her & see how incredible she is.
5.Main reason Phoebe's career did not go along like Linda's is due to some personal choices Phoebe made. Her daughter was born with medical issues requiring full time care. Phoebe opted to be a Mom First, Star Second.
@rpscot Thanks for posting this truth. Phoebe had to make personal choices to care for her child. Kudos to her. I do hope she recovers from her stroke. I haven't heard any updates on that situation. She is such a talented performer.
I remember this performance and I have searched for it for years. Thanks so much for posting it. I love this song and their performance. The Roche Sisters did a great job on it too!!!
Mickster, if you are watching this, I am so smiling. This is just as good as it gets. Love............... Hickory. And bless all those who have already watched this magnificent performance and welcome to all those yet to enjoy it for the first time.
Phoebe has such a gift and has had such a hell of a life. All I can say is that she is in my prayers regularly. I love her voice! What I want to know is WHY these two didn't ever record an album together? What a treat we all have missed! The only version better than this one is the Roaches, themselves! You go Girlfriends!
Sometimes I feel a bit sorry for the present day kids. They will not have had 30+ years pass and then be able to revisit stuff like this with the same effect. They have no idea what it's like to not have access they way we do now. Can't relate. Perspective is a wonderful thing we should all pay close attention to.

@RedPetrol76 He produced a few of The Roches' albums. Maggie Roche wrote this song and the original, Fripp produced track is on their 1979 album - The Roches.
I've been looking for this for 30 years. I'm not kidding. I've looked through music compilations, roamed the internet for hours. I can't tell you how great it is to find this.
30 years - wow - I was sixteen. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this cut, thanks for posting it. Moving on to their other duet "Shoop Shoop Song" right now - whoo hoo!
Brilliant! I am so thrilled to see this performance here--and in such beautiful, crystal clear condition!
I remember the original broadcast of this SNL show; I fell absolutely in love with this stunning song and have been hoping to find either the audio or audio-video for it for a long time now.
Thank you so much, PhyllisVideoVault! Well done!! :-)
Thanks Phillys! Phoebe and Linda are close friends here and now! Its so good to see these videos of a time that was Bittersweet! My best to Linda and Phoebe! Barbara

Well, here you have two different scenarios...
1. the roaches do the song regularly...hey! they wrote it, for god's sake!
2. this recording of it is an impromptu thing that happened remarkably due to Saturday Night Live & they had maybe a week to rehearse together.
For a spur of the moment thing (and historcal one at that) it's truly genius at work!!! You should appreciate it for that reason!
You should also check out George Harrison & Paul Simon's duets on SNL, TOO!

Well done!! :-)

Usn't it amazing to watch two people who can just sing--are natural--no smoke and mirrors. Music rarely gets this good anymore. Thanks!
