In this song, I hate Phoebus the most because you finally see why Esmeralda would fall for him. In this musical, and in the book, it is easy to just go, "He's a jerk, stupid Esmeralda." But now he's poetic and my heart almost wants to melt, against my better judgement. You see -- of course a lonely naive 16-year old gypsy girl would love him. And he has some poetry in his soul; he can feel; he's not just a monster . . . which makes him more of one. :(
@Abhilynn Well, I think that is what he's like in the book. After all, he's an accomplished seducer: charming, but extremely fickle. Hugo explains that he's able to profess his love so well, because he's already done so under so many different circumstances. I guess the reader is more cynical in the book, because the narration is ironic.
Sadly, Esmeralda almost knows this, but she just can't bring herself to care.
@Amy3422 I don't think its because she doesn't care. I think its because that Esmeralda is so deeply infatuated with Phoebus that she can't bear the idea that he might be seeing another woman. In fact, in the book, it says it quite clearly. When Esmeralda was set to be hanged the first time, she saw Phoebus standing in a balcony with Fleur-de-Lys. She had a feeling that wasn't right, but she couldn't bring herself to think about it. Basically Esmeralda was intentionally in denial about Phoebus.
@EmilyGreene1984 Absolutely! (I didn't say that she didn't care.) There is a moment during this scene in the book when I think she suggests they get married and then instantly retracts it, because she understands that soldiers don't view gypsies that way, which is especially heart-breaking. She goes a bit nuts about him later on though, clinging to her feelings for him at the cost of her life . . .
@malcom0000 because it is ;) but it is supposed to be frollo. just: this was the only way of having gringoire downstage for fatalité... since it's just a glimpse of a second where you could actually see it, they decided to do it this way. think i heard them talking about it in an interview once ;)

Gringoire stabs Phoebus because according to the Story, he is married to Esmerelda. (She married him to protect him from the Gypsies and Clopin who wanted to hang him).
@generalcircle Frollo was the one that did it beacisue he confesses it latter on in the play. Aslo if you look in the shadow it lokks like the jacket Frollo is wearing. Also accordding to the story, they are only married my name, and Clopain says that Esmeralda should take him as spouse not lover.
She says, "Je veux t'aimer, t'aimer au risque de ma vie" Which means "I want to love you even at the risk of my own life", so I can see how it can be translated as "Love you even if I die"
He's not exactly the typical hero - womanizing, gambling, drunk, and perpetually broke. And not very intelligent. The only reason Esmeralda likes him is because he fits her dreams of being taken by a lord and such.
You can see Gringoire turning to look at the scene and making the same gesture with his empty hand as Frollo is making while stabbing Phoebus with Esmeralda's knife.
yeah, her mother was a white parisian. her father i dunno. however Esmeralda was very tan with dark hair and eyes so she fit in well with the gypsies even tho she wasn't one by birth...
Andalusians are from Spain...tan but definitely not black. They definitely have very dark skin compared to the typical French person though, so a girl like Esmeralda would have stuck out a lot.
