This cofuses people to say Doh Jai more than Mgoi to say thank you. Mgoi is mostly used. Doh jai is for formal situations. Also Mgoi is use to say excuse me instead Deui m jee. So Mgoi is more helpfull all around.
Could someone explain further pls? I always thought "im goy" was an informal thank you, not actually "pls", and that "daw je" was a more formal or 'higher level' thank you. Pls correct my understanding if wrong. THX.
The way my Chinese friends explained it was, "m'goi" was more like if someone did something for you, like grabbed something for you or gave you something out of reach. It could be less formal because it is a general "Thanks/Thank you" but not necessarily.
But "daw je" is if someone gave you something, like a gift, which would, ethically, make them more revered. Does that make sense?
