this is an amazing cover, opeth really does this song justice. Layne Staley and Mikael Åkerfeldt have very different voices, but michael's voice suits this song so well, with no disprespect to layne. great cover and insane solo
Akerfeldt has his own style, if you think he sucked the life out of it then its your opinion. Dont put him down for singing it his way, its a COVER paying tribute to a good band....its not a sound-just-like-the-band song.
i agree opeth is a decent band, by no means epic though. it always seems like when a "decent" band tries to remake something created by legends it never works out.
As far as singing its actually the other way arouond. Being a vocalist for almost 30 years there is no doubt Layne was original and amazing, but there is no rock singer out there that has the range that Mikael Akerfeldt has, with the exception of a young Chris Cornell.
Being some garage band alternative singer doesn't mean jack shit. Mikael is a great vocalist, but you're a fucking idiot if you think he has the best range out there. That would go to Mike Patton or Dax Riggs.
you have a small penis, fuck you and i hope you burn in hell for insulting such great talent. go get shot and listen to your gay ass fall out boy, faggot
The fact that this got a +3 despite being devoid of any intelligent thought shows just how idiotic and/or fanboyish some Opeth fans are getting today.
I think he can hit a lot of octaves. There are of course the extremely low growly ones, but he sings pretty high in songs like Ghost of Perdition.... I'll agree that he doesn't have the "largest" range though...
I'm pretty sure growling is not counted as singing (I wish I could explain this using musical terms, but I simply can't find the words at the minute), just like talking.
Even though it sounds fucking awesome (except I'm not too fond of Akerfeldt's growl, too clean for my tastes), it's probably not counted as a part of your vocal register.
Yeah, you're right. I actually like the clean growls, but I'm a wimp when it comes to metal. I'm not really crazy about this cover... I haven't listened to much Alice in Chains but I think I would rather listen to the original. Opeth has done some very good covers before though.
great cover..amazing vocals and bass...now we know that opeth respect AIC and their great music..the solo kicks ass..and please remember that mike is mike and layne is layne.we cant compare 2 different kind of voices..
hmmm I'm a massive AIC fan, and a fan of Opeth but this could be any melodic metal band covering Would? Shame, Opeth are capable of doing some great work. In fact, I love their cover of Celtic Frost's Circle of the Tyrants, its one of my favourite covers!
Opeth is one of my favourite bands, but I do find this cover version to be a bit superflous, as to me it's almost identical to the original, and then what's the point of recording it, if you can't give it your own twist?
The main flaw I have with this cover is that Akerfeldt doesn't try to go all out like Staley did on the original song. But that might just be out of respect to Staley.
A little disappointed, but then again, the original was near flawless and probably my favorite song by Alice In Chains, so... maybe my expectations were a little unrealistic, even if one of my favorite death metal bands was doing the cover. I think where this song stumbles is how it tries to be different from the original, rather than trying to improve on it with the band's strengths.
I haven't really listened to Opeth before, but god damn this is good. Sounds neat to hear it from just one singer (Jerry sang the verses, Layne sang the chorus but I'm sure you all knew that one)
My personal opinion as an Alice in chains fan is that the cover is good.
Lets faced Opeth is probably the most gifted death progressive band and nowadays they are on the top of their game; in regards AIC I hope God has mercy of Layne soul RIP brother everyone miss you.
Finally! We get to hear Would ? It's a pretty cool cover. Don't know why everyone is knocking Mikes voice. Think he done a good job. Definately added an Opeth touch to the song.
I think this is the one time that Mikael's voice fails him. It's too soft and breathey for a song like this, especially the way Layne Stayley's original vocals were. I was expecting to at least have some light growling in there. I think Draconian Times-era Paradise Lost would have been able to pull it off, the way Nick Holmes sang on that album might have suited a cover. But this? I don't think it works as well as the original...and this is coming from a fan who has hung out with Opeth before.
Akerfeldt's voice isnt as harsh as Staleys....so i cant really say that its better than the original. and it doesnt have on and off vocals between two people like the original (cantrell and staley) so i prefer the original. ALTHOUGH, the opening bass part of this version is cooler lol
Great cover and i like it.. but a big point of the song is the powerful voice of Layne and this kind of breaks that point.. But I quess that is the point of covers to give the song a hue of your own band... great cover but please dont say that better than the original.. And the solo is great by the way
the copy is crap there is clipping and all kinds of problems so i can't judge, but mike is no lane and his vocals are tame by comparison, i do like that they tried to be on point w/ it though. can't really do an AIC better than them though.
I love Opeth and I love this cover. I even like Opeth more than I like AIC, but AIC shows way more emotion. I mean, come one. No one sings like Staley. Well, maybe Bradley Delp.
Done very much in the style of Opeth, not bad at all...still to the people saying it's better than the original, show some freakin' respect to Alice In Chains...
Nah i really think Opeth could have easily made this their own. I hear no prominent keyboards, screaming etc Sounds very similar to the original in guitar tone vocal style etc. But still good - I love the song
That they do not do. Their covers of Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple), Remember Tomorrow (Iron Maiden), and Bridge of Sighs especially (Robin Trower) are also amazing.
Wow. I'm surprised Opeth didn't make this song like, 8 minutes. These guys put me to sleep.

"Range" doesn't just mean hitting HIGH notes, I guarantee none of those guys can croon nor hit notes as low as Mikael, that my friend is a fact.
NacreousCTD 3 years ago
A singer's range is how many octaves they can reach, Akerfeldt cannot hit many octaves.
There's no problem with this, but there's a problem if you claim that he has the largest range out there.
