  • Wow. I'm surprised Opeth didn't make this song like, 8 minutes. These guys put me to sleep.

  • i think that akenfield dont feeling that song...bad voice..

  • Spell his fucking name right next time

    ...or get it close

  • Love both bands, but the original is better.

  • fucking awesome!

  • this is an amazing cover, opeth really does this song justice. Layne Staley and Mikael Åkerfeldt have very different voices, but michael's voice suits this song so well, with no disprespect to layne. great cover and insane solo

  • Both bands fucking rule. Thanks for the link!!!

  • really...really shitty quality..love both bands though ^_^

  • "they kind of sucked the life and excitement out of this one."

This is exatly true. Staley on heroin had more feeling and excitement than this guy. They did pick a great song to remake though.

  • Akerfeldt has his own style, if you think he sucked the life out of it then its your opinion. Dont put him down for singing it his way, its a COVER paying tribute to a good band....its not a sound-just-like-the-band song.

  • i agree opeth is a decent band, by no means epic though. it always seems like when a "decent" band tries to remake something created by legends it never works out.

  • I'm happy he didn't try and do a Layne style voice. If he would have it wouldn't have been good, but this is a damn good cover

  • Far greater than the original.

  • Dumb fuck, you probably haven't even heard the fucking original, idiot fanboy.

  • Everyone's heard the original.

    This is just better.

  • Except the Guitarist wanked all over it and the drummer completely screwed up one of Kinney's most iconic parts.

  • I don't see it that way.

This is the only AIC song I have ever cared for & this band did it better.

  • Love Opeth and chains not sure bout this cover tho!

  • Wow this is such a good song, Love it.

  • oh i love this

it sounds very like the original you know

    only the sound quality sucks

but it's still a shame Layne Staley died

  • Drummer completely botched the part.

But, it's Axenrot, what more can we expect?

  • OMG... great cover guys!!! 5/5!!!! good style of music... Grunge & Metal lives!... greetings from argentina !!!!♥!!

  • This is fucking fantastic.

Pretty much my two favorite bands.

Now if Opeth could do a cover of Hollow by Pantera, i'd cream my jeans.

  • Excellent, both the original and this cover are great

  • The sound quality of this version sucks.

  • this is preview only, you have link to mp3 256 kbit in video info.

  • Nobody can top Layne's voice or sound, but Opeth is one of the most brilliant bands out there.

very nice choice in Seattle,WA local music.

  • As far as singing its actually the other way arouond. Being a vocalist for almost 30 years there is no doubt Layne was original and amazing, but there is no rock singer out there that has the range that Mikael Akerfeldt has, with the exception of a young Chris Cornell.

  • What about Stu Block, or Ihsahn?

    How about Simen Hestnaes?

    Theres a lot that do.

  • Being some garage band alternative singer doesn't mean jack shit. Mikael is a great vocalist, but you're a fucking idiot if you think he has the best range out there. That would go to Mike Patton or Dax Riggs.

  • Mikael Akerfeldt has a small range.

His actual singing is maybe 1-2 octaves.

Dio, Cornell, and Halford all have larger ranges.

  • He may have a small range, but I like his voice anyway. 5/5

  • you have a small penis, fuck you and i hope you burn in hell for insulting such great talent. go get shot and listen to your gay ass fall out boy, faggot

  • The fact that this got a +3 despite being devoid of any intelligent thought shows just how idiotic and/or fanboyish some Opeth fans are getting today.

  • "Range" doesn't just mean hitting HIGH notes, I guarantee none of those guys can croon nor hit notes as low as Mikael, that my friend is a fact.

  • A singer's range is how many octaves they can reach, Akerfeldt cannot hit many octaves.

There's no problem with this, but there's a problem if you claim that he has the largest range out there.

  • I think he can hit a lot of octaves. There are of course the extremely low growly ones, but he sings pretty high in songs like Ghost of Perdition.... I'll agree that he doesn't have the "largest" range though...

  • I'm pretty sure growling is not counted as singing (I wish I could explain this using musical terms, but I simply can't find the words at the minute), just like talking.

Even though it sounds fucking awesome (except I'm not too fond of Akerfeldt's growl, too clean for my tastes), it's probably not counted as a part of your vocal register.

  • Yeah, you're right. I actually like the clean growls, but I'm a wimp when it comes to metal. I'm not really crazy about this cover... I haven't listened to much Alice in Chains but I think I would rather listen to the original. Opeth has done some very good covers before though.

  • his range is perfect for opeth though. still like that he puts clean vox on such intence music. its hard to find bands like that these days.

    nice cover

  • this deserves to be paid for. very nice cover. i fuckin love opeth and alice in chains!! RIP Layne

  • The original owns this, but Opeth still does it justice.

  • its fags like you that should just think and not type.

  • one hell of a cover...

never actually got into alice and chains but I have a friend who is huge with them. I will probably check them out now.

  • damn good cover

  • great cover..amazing vocals and bass...now we know that opeth respect AIC and their great music..the solo kicks ass..and please remember that mike is mike and layne is layne.we cant compare 2 different kind of voices..

  • yeah men!

  • hmmm I'm a massive AIC fan, and a fan of Opeth but this could be any melodic metal band covering Would? Shame, Opeth are capable of doing some great work. In fact, I love their cover of Celtic Frost's Circle of the Tyrants, its one of my favourite covers!

  • FINALLY!

  • This is great!

  • great cover, but this upload of it is clipping very badly.

  • Opeth is one of my favourite bands, but I do find this cover version to be a bit superflous, as to me it's almost identical to the original, and then what's the point of recording it, if you can't give it your own twist?

  • Wow, this is a very good cover!

  • i dont give out good comments on covers but this is pretty damn good!

  • sounds a few scott weiland vocal s chords !

  • Your audio is fucked dude.

  • very nice cover, Mikael's voice worked so perfectly in the verses. would've been sick if he growled in the outro

  • Opeth is great. Alice in Chains is great. This cover is great.

  • The main flaw I have with this cover is that Akerfeldt doesn't try to go all out like Staley did on the original song. But that might just be out of respect to Staley.

  • its not meant to be an exact copy it's an interpretation

  • God has spoken again!!!!

  • This is really great. I think I like this and the original equally.

  • This is awesome! I wonder what Layne would have said to this version?!?

  • A little disappointed, but then again, the original was near flawless and probably my favorite song by Alice In Chains, so... maybe my expectations were a little unrealistic, even if one of my favorite death metal bands was doing the cover. I think where this song stumbles is how it tries to be different from the original, rather than trying to improve on it with the band's strengths.

  • I think Opeth did a fantastic job.

  • Love it. Love it. Love it.

  • i just came.

  • I haven't really listened to Opeth before, but god damn this is good. Sounds neat to hear it from just one singer (Jerry sang the verses, Layne sang the chorus but I'm sure you all knew that one)

  • My 2nd favorite band ever covering my 3rd favorite band ever...YES.

  • pretty good obviously nothing compared to the original

  • its a cover for a reason, if you want to hear Alice in Chain's version, listen to that. I dig it, but no repeat ever beats the original

  • Songs like Would cannot be covered as well as the original one. That's the truth.

In that case...i'm not excited that Opeth cover that song. I didn't like it at all! It's not for Opeth, even if they're so good mucisians.

  • My personal opinion as an Alice in chains fan is that the cover is good.

Lets faced Opeth is probably the most gifted death progressive band and nowadays they are on the top of their game; in regards AIC I hope God has mercy of Layne soul RIP brother everyone miss you.

  • this is a damn good cover...I first heard this group thanks to my dad bringing it to my attention...I was like ehh....but this is a great cover

  • Really awesome. The only thing I would have changed is putting growls at the end.

  • Nice, nice, very nice.

  • Finally! We get to hear Would ? It's a pretty cool cover. Don't know why everyone is knocking Mikes voice. Think he done a good job. Definately added an Opeth touch to the song.

  • Fantastic.

  • damn out of everyones covers..they are in the top 5...not too bad..

  • This is obviously not better than the original, but I still like it alot.

  • I love Opeth, but to me, the original song is just untouchable.

  • I think this is the one time that Mikael's voice fails him. It's too soft and breathey for a song like this, especially the way Layne Stayley's original vocals were. I was expecting to at least have some light growling in there. I think Draconian Times-era Paradise Lost would have been able to pull it off, the way Nick Holmes sang on that album might have suited a cover. But this? I don't think it works as well as the original...and this is coming from a fan who has hung out with Opeth before.

  • Not a good singer ? Idiot.

  • this is amazing!! love it!

  • cool!

  • It sounds so much like the original.. its weird

  • I like his vocals, they work better than I thought. It makes the song more depressive, which I love.

  • Akerfeldt's voice isnt as harsh as Staleys....so i cant really say that its better than the original. and it doesnt have on and off vocals between two people like the original (cantrell and staley) so i prefer the original. ALTHOUGH, the opening bass part of this version is cooler lol

  • Great cover and i like it.. but a big point of the song is the powerful voice of Layne and this kind of breaks that point.. But I quess that is the point of covers to give the song a hue of your own band... great cover but please dont say that better than the original.. And the solo is great by the way

  • the copy is crap there is clipping and all kinds of problems so i can't judge, but mike is no lane and his vocals are tame by comparison, i do like that they tried to be on point w/ it though. can't really do an AIC better than them though.

  • It's very similar to the original but I like it.

  • Thats what i like about it haha its perdy damn close to me so far

  • More passion than the original?

I don't know of many bands that

    showed more passion in their

    songs and lyrics than AIC...

  • holy crap this is awesome

  • very interesting...sounds good though:)

  • lol whats with all you idiots giving me thumbs down? Sad that I said This cover is much better than the actual thing?

Dont get me wrong. I love the original too. But this has more passion

  • No way man.

I love Opeth and I love this cover. I even like Opeth more than I like AIC, but AIC shows way more emotion. I mean, come one. No one sings like Staley. Well, maybe Bradley Delp.

  • I agree; Layne Staley is the most emotional singer ever.

  • Done very much in the style of Opeth, not bad at all...still to the people saying it's better than the original, show some freakin' respect to Alice In Chains...

  • A very good cover considering that Opeth is a metal band.

  • wow this is an interesting take on my FAVORITE song.....well done

  • This isn't better than the original, dudes.

  • Damn right it doesn´t.

    Still awesome version.

  • helll yh

  • Nah i really think Opeth could have easily made this their own. I hear no prominent keyboards, screaming etc Sounds very similar to the original in guitar tone vocal style etc. But still good - I love the song

  • This is just mad!! Sounds just as good as the original. Well done Opeth!

  • Watch your mouth...

  • What? You like the AIC's version better?

  • Hell yeah

  • I can *

  • I'm listening to this with headphones on and I can't hear it fucking blasting through my speakers.

  • god bless u mikael.....

  • What would've made the song even more kick ass is if instead of singing the end cleanly Mikael growled it.

  • link to 256 kbps mp3 in comment. sorry for quality, windows movie maker sucks ;p

  • AWESOME

  • acoustic orgasm!

  • Alice and Opeth are two of my favorite bands. \m/

  • Can somebody put up a version that's not distorted? Sounds like shit.

  • Way better than the original. But the quality...:/

  • the original one is better...AIC is AIC and layne is layne...

BTW great work opeth u keep rockin with the covers! but AIC version is much better!

  • I agree the original is definitely better. Still a legendary cover though.

  • Amazing cover, terrible quality though.

  • nice

  • FUCK YEAH! Opeth only does justice to covers. They never do a horrible job.

  • That they do not do. Their covers of Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple), Remember Tomorrow (Iron Maiden), and Bridge of Sighs especially (Robin Trower) are also amazing.

  • Indeed. I think their version of "SoF" is better than Deep Purples.

  • ME too.

  • Awesome. Lane Staley would be proud.

  • its great
