The other natural indicator is your tongue. If the substance tastes extremely sour, then starts hurting and your skin start pealing off, that's acid.

I should think we need a good ph indicator for our drinking water. Our body is 75% or more water. So taking too much acidic or alkaline compounds will cause our ph balance to alter and may make us more susceptible to falling sick.
