Looking at initial hover, pilot knew how to fly helicopter. Question is why he wanted to fly down the street with obstructions on low altitude? It's always dangerous to fly heli in confined areas. One should always avoid it, unless there is some specific job to do.

If you read the official accident report you will learn that the chopper had a problem with the fuel system and 1 engine performed at 50% power, only. Pilot tried to get away from bystanders as he anticipated the chopper would tilt upon touch down.

A 100 year old died after the accident in hospital. The flight was his birthday present.

Due to the immediate help of bystanders, passengers and the pilot, more casualties were avoided.

Thanks for the explanation....but one question still is left unanswered,....wouldn't the landing gear have prevented him from tipping over? I am not a pilot and don't know a lot about aeronautics....but obviously there was some type of equipment failure.Helicopters seem difficult to learn how to use the controls.....I always crash using flight simulator 2004.

That was no professional pilot, nobody would allow it to drift around like that, and then "drive" down the street without gaining any altitude -- the pilot should have either put it right back down on the ground or gained enough altitude so that he'd be clear of the ground obstacles.
