Today is the 9th Anniversary of 9/11. This commercial always puts me in a reflective mood. Who back then could have ever imagined what was going to happen in 5 years. BTW, can someone explain why Buick still exists?Even if Olds deserved to die Buick should have been next in line, not Pontiac.I blame Tiger Woods.....................
@huanpup Buick only survived because it's HUGE in China - they view Buicks the same way North Americans view Mercedes-Benz and BMW's, prestigious cars that drivers aspire to own. That's something I'll never understand.
Guys it doesnt make sense to keep oldsmobile. The niche that it was in has dried up. No one buys Personal Luxury Coupes anymore so they got rid of cars like oldsmobile, and the Lincoln Mark, and Cadillac Eldorado....
@zekthedeadcow they legally can't. Every car company has to have a brand with it's name on it according to US law. It's the only reason GMC every existsed
Long live Oldsmobile! When these cars came out i though WOW, what a beautiful car. The best thing to come out of Lansing in 30 years! I never though id own one, but happy i do now.
GM was to large and had too many re-bagged cars from brand to brand, sunbird-cavailer, alero-grand am, impala-grand prix-intrigue, deville-park avenue-bonnieville-aurora-rivera.
Olds was sadly discontinued at the peak of it's excellent recent sales and model offerings. It wasn't Olds in trouble, it was/is GM. And now we face the prospect of losing Pontiac the self-same way. This leaves a big gap between mostly entry level Chevy and upscale Buick. Cadillac should have jumped far ahead to it's roots as The Standard of the World in progressive world-class luxury engineering, and Olds as the traditional GM performance division. Too little, too late, now.
the Oldsmobile Aurora was the car that would "save" the automaker the late 80's came and went then they changed the tag line to " this isn't your fathers Oldsmobile, but it was too late i would have and still would buy one just to have a peace of history.
The "Aurora" was originally designed for Cadillac for 1992. The "bubble-car" photo (with the Cadillac Aurora name) was at the GM Training Center in Burbank for many years. The Olds version looks much better. I bought a new 1998 Aurora and drove it 9 years. I missed it so much I just bought another one!
Toyota hired American designers to steal our design philosophy away to create a V8 RWD sedan. To me the Lexus LS always drove like a fat Camry-pure junk, then and now, only $82,000 junk today.
Its a shame they killed the brand, but really, it made sense, Buicks are historically better built and neither brand was selling incredibly well, so they stuck with the brand that had more repeat buyers and a stronger direction.
Saturn and terrible marketing is what killed Oldsmobile. Saturn used money and time, and many late 80s early 90s ads completely alienated previous buyers, though the product was at its best. This is a fantastic commercial though...

Whoever buys Toyota is very smart.Oldsmobile was a great car. The makers of it have not been able to adjust to new consumer demands in terms of quality, fuel consumption and reliability.
They got rid of Oldsmobile because of costly production. They were not able to make big profits on it, consumers were lucky to have gotten so much for so little.
Do not get me wrong. I hate the Big Three. But the design of this Aurora I like. Most American cars do look good, built well (except the engine and transmission departments).
@95oldsaurora GM should have dumped Buick. I'll bet that Buick was going to get dumped because Buick wasnt building anything anyone liked. The Aurora was Oldsmobiles crown jewel.
@95oldsaurora How about selling individually unique cars for both companies? The Aurora was one of the last of these vehicles made by GM; many newer GMs are "badge-engineered" - e.g. the Pontiac Grand Am/Oldsmobile Alero, Oldsmobile Silhouette/Pontiac Trans Sport/Chevrolet Venture, and many more. They shouldn't sell the same car under multiple brands - that made GM inefficient and ultimately go bankrupt.
@whattheheck1000 you ever hear of the ford taurus/mercury sable, the crown vic/grand marquis/marauder/lincoln continental, the explorer/mounatineer, gm is not the first nor the last to use that technique
@95oldsaurora I believe I already posted it here, but I got a '99, as my first car, love it like heck. Pontiac still made good cars, so I don't think it should've gone, but Saturn... oh boy... at the time when everyone says "BUY AMERICAN", they got rid of AMERICAN car companies, and kept foriegn ones. BAD IDEA FOR MARKETING. (Thus, they went bankrupt). Keep Olds, don't go bankrupt, keep pontiac, don't go bankrupt, keep both, don't go bankrupt, keep only saturn, go bankrupt and die.
