Wilt would be the greatest ever if he had a killer instinct in the playoffs. But he played 1 mode or gear the entire season. You gotta be able to kick it up a notch.
@BNS224 I also have in-game NCAA footage of a goal-tend call on one of his attempted blocks. What's shocking is that he catches the ball at the top of the backboard, and his elevation doesn't stop gaining until his shoulder is rim level. A very small select few athletes have a higher vertical none are 7'1". I've never seen a player reach that high before.
@BNS224 I'm a paleontology illustrator and I study a lot of anatomy in motion in mammals. Every skeletal index I analyze in mammal species also directly applies to humans and sport science. Wilt's legs have an exceptional crural index, giving him a major leverage advantage over equal strength athletes for jumping. His waist midpoint is 3.975', his High-Jump PR is 6'6.75" - midpoint to midpoint his waist has to elevate to 7.34' to clear the bar. So his max-vert is likely between 39.6" and 40.4"

Jordan made the free throw line dunk famous and it was considered an incredible feat while he ran from half court. Wilt did it easily from the top of the small circle. Thats why they made the rule that you had to stand still and shoot the free throws. That is a fact.
I don't know what Wilt's vert was but no one could do that except for him.
@Vstrat0 ,he never blocked it after the ball reached its apex,he blocked it up on its way up,thats if he even did do that,Walton couldnt get up that high,so I doubt he did that, i could be wrong, but I doubt it.Wilt blocked it at its apex, big difference
@Lossforwords78 ,Wilt never jumped as high as he couldve because he had long arms. I'm talking the young Wilt. There isnt alot of footage of Wilt. Very little footage. Wilt was on another level. End of discussion. Wilt dunked from the line before Jordan was born
Not trying to diminish Wilts accomplishments. He to me is a David Robinson/Shaq hybrid. And is by far the best center of all time. If he played today hed probably average 40 PPG/15 RPG for his best season.
Flaw in your logic. 1) Fast break teams are not invincible. Ask the Phoenix Suns. 2) Those 60's Celtics were not that fast break they were more defense oriented. 3) The 80's showtime was shut down 2 times during 84, 89, against the Celtics/Pistons because of defense. Would have been in 86 if they werent upset by Houston and would have been in 88 if Isiah hadnt broke his foot in game 7.
that finger roll...seems like easy points for a big man..wilt jumped so high that he basically lets the ball drop into the hoop. dwight howard should learn that shot...
@tmh1717 - You're right. But tell me this...what center can block Kareems SKYHOOK?? ....ah. gotcha there. ONLY WILT...Greatest most gifted center ever.
@NBAGOATS so let me get this straight. You're saying that in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's entire career, which spans over 20 seasons and 1,560 games, you've not only seen them all but recall every time he's used his signature move and been blocked? I've seen it happen with all of those guys. The clips are on youtube. Search for any highlight videos of them and you'll find them.
@TheLegendaryMoja Name one video. There is a video of Kareem saying that Manute Bol has NEVER blocked his Skyhook even though he was a great shot blocker. He even stated that the only player able to block his Skyhook was Wilt. Show me a video. Post the title. I'll be happy to take a look at it.
If you actually watch that game both teams around the 150 point mark they were still playing with almost the same energy they started out with. In fact when the game first went into overtime the game was tied 145-145 the game ended in triple over time at 186-184 thats almost a 41 point difference in 15 minutes. Not bad considering the game already lasted 46 minutes. So I wouldnt say wilt chamberlains energy is beyond the imagination.
Do you know the NBA's highest scoring game? It was between the Nuggets and the pistons. Pitsons - 186 Nuggest 184. Do you know when they interviewed those players they asked them how they scored so much. They replied by saying it was like a summer league game being played for fun because no one concentrated on defense. Now imagine a whole era of baksetball playing that same type of game. Everyones numbers explode. Thats why I always question Magic Johnsons stats. He played on a fast break team
I forgot Clifford Ray who was 6'11 and Neal Walk who was 6'10.Walter Dukes was a track star, Russell was athletic, Walt Bellamy,Nate Thurmond, Jabbar were all athletic too. Wilt never used his size and strength,he used his speed and athleticism.Wilt had quick feet and could beat any big man down the court, because he was that fast. Ask Jabbar who shut him down in game 5 of the 72 Confrenece finals and blocked his sky hook 5 times and out rebounded him 26-16.
I think you forgot one...Artis Gilmore. If any of these centers that Wilt played against came in to the league today they would be heralded as the next coming. There's just not centers like these today.
I have stopped arguing with Wilt detractors. Just because they doubt Wilt's athletic achievements doesn't mean he didn't accomplish them.
They try to "logically" explain Wilt, but fail to realize that he was no ordinary 7 footer. There are people, until this day, who are still trying to put Wilt's dominance into context - even those who saw the man play.
No doubt Wilt was legendary and beyond normal. However the game was different in the 60's. Faster pace, horrible FG% more like a run and gun style of play. Theres a reason wilt and russell averaged 27 RPG. Wilt was not the only one scoring crazy. Elgin Baylor averaged 38 PPG the same year Wilt averaged 50 PPG. I think If Wilt played today his best season he would average 38 maybe 40PPG 14/15 RPG, 4 APG, 4 BPG
Solid post, but you also have take into account the great amount of minutes Wilt played. The man averaged approximately 46 mpg for his career, and he even had a season in which he averaged OVER 48 mpg.
Playing those amount of minutes helped Wilt pad his stats. What can I say? The man had amazing stamina. He should not be penalized for that.
In Dwight Howard's best season, he averaged 14.2 rpg while playing 38 mpg. Imagine how many more rebounds he would have if he averaged 46 mpg.
He had amazing stamina no doubt but I believe he wasnt playing every minute at 100%. You know what Im saying. Players take breaks and it gives them time to catch their breath and play more effectively thats why I think Wilts best season he would average 38-40 PPG with maybe 15-17 RPG
Were you aware that in the 1961-62 season that Wilt only missed a grand total of 8 minutes and 33 seconds of the season? That was because he was ejected. Wilt was physically conditioned to play nearly the entire game.
When a great rebounder plays a lot of minutes, he is going to grab a lot of boards.
If Howard can grab 14 boards per game playing 38 mpg, then I am quite sure Wilt can grab around 20 boards playing 46 mpg, even in today's game.
That will probably be Dwight Howards career best. Hakeem Olajuwons career best was 14 as well. I will give you that Wilts best season probably 18 RPG but he couldnt do that for his whole career.
How many more rebounds per game do you think Howard would grab if he played 46 mpg? How many rebounds per game do you realistically see him grabbing playing 46 mpg?
Not that many. I will tell you why, because the 8 minutes he didnt play he needed those minutes to rest otherwise he would be playing with half of his potential due to being tired. Just because WIlt played the entire game doenst mean he was playing 100% the whole time. Get what Im saying
Wilt did not need much time to rest - because he had a lot of stamina. It is a true testament to Wilt's stamina that he could be so productive, playing in a faster paced era, while still averaging 46 mpg.
Whether Wilt was "100%" or not, his rebounding numbers were impressive.
If Howard had more stamina, then he would play more minutes, and thus be more productive.
BTW, I think Howard would grab 3-5 more boards playing an extra 8 minutes per game.
Thats where I disagree. Bill Russell averaged about 42.3 MPG career and Wilt Chamberlain averaged 45 MPG career. Thats almost the same. Alot of players back then played the majority of the game. Bill Russell and Wilt chamberlain averaged the same career average at 22 RPG. You argue that he should be more tired because he played in a faster paced NBA but I could argue he had more energy because that era didnt specialize in defense. Let me give you an example
Look, it's difficult to separate fact from fiction when discussing Wilt's accomplishments. Legendary Kansas U coach Phog Allen was a proponent of 12 foot rims, because he felt big men were dominating the game. Of course, this was before Wilt decided to attend Kansas. Anyway, Wilt claimed he dunked on the experimental 12ft rim while at Kansas. It is a fact that he high jumped 6'6", so it seems reasonable he could dunk on a 12ft basket. This puts his vertical at 30inches minimum.
Did you watch the video? Wilt had a 51 inch vert, 6'6" high jump, champion runner, he was not just a big guy, he was one of the most athletic centers ever, he could hang on the top of backboards. He blocked Kareem's hookshot. What, 3 centers have ever done that?
Wilt would be the greatest ever if he had a killer instinct in the playoffs. But he played 1 mode or gear the entire season. You gotta be able to kick it up a notch.
