  • How could a song as beautiful as this ever have at least 1 dislike. Some people have no life

  • Beautiful!!!

  • i just came

  • Aeronautics was neither an industry nor a science. It was a miracle.. ✈

  • What a glorious song. First time hearing it but oh my, how it does things to me. Music at its most beautiful.

  • THIS SHIT IS THE DOPE MAN

  • wow, i'm speechless. i saw the advert and fell in love with this song. Its rare that a piece of music makes me feel truely insignificant.

  • Obviously influenced by Ludovico Einaudi's Divernire :) Two beautiful pieces.

  • Thank you very much !!

  • Just learned how to play this on piano

  • @ThechosenDemon Do you have a music sheet for this? or know where i could find one? :D x

  • @kooliobabe

Sorry I learned it by ear, it's rather easy to though. The key is F major, and the the first couple of notes are D, A, A, DB, A, C, B, D, E, F.

  • A very well put together tribute to how far aviation has come. Thank you for posting the video. Looking forward to the next century of flight.

  • @QuestLock silly me!

  • @QuestLock

    brilliantly put together.

  • Some amazing shots the last minute of that video

  • @K00lkane: The contraption at 0:32 is the John W. Pitts Skycar. Pitts spent what must have been a tremendous amount of time and money trying in vain to make his idea work. He even went through the trouble of patenting the machine. Even though his design was a failure, we can still admire his tenacity and learn from his efforts.

  • Dude, what the hell is that contraption at 0:32? :P

  • does this remind anyone else of Ludovico Einaudi?

  • Genius.

    Simply, genius.

  • I need a piano, anyone have one that I can use to help keep greatness alive???

  • @reaganlogan hahahaahhah

  • proof that human ingenuity will continue to increase

  • Very Nice. Very talented lady.

I had myself convinced this was a completely different 'song' when I heard it in the British Airways commercial, late 2011...

  • To Fly.... To Serve.. - British Airways

  • The first minutes of this dramatic song is very soothing...makes my want to cry. Then, the last, that's my favorite part. Love those pictures and videos too!

  • Whenever I here this song it reminds me of how I met my boyfriend, I was waiting for a flight to Spain I was standing by the window looking out at the planes when he came and stood next to me, he had amazing eyes and I felt drawn to him, it's weird but everytime I here this song it makes me want to cry XD

  • @ZuZuFarron21 wow thats very nice :)

  • @MrGamigon Lool Thanks x

  • last minute of the song sounds as if it was inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack.

  • reminds me of top gun

  • Wow. Emotional and beautiful. Well done BA for choosing this.

  • Beautiful!

  • 1:45 to 3:36 is the british airways advert music

  • @knightsoflegion: If you only knew how difficult it is to build and work with a flying machine from this era. I built a reproduction Wright 1902 glider (hull #8) in 2002-03 and exhibited at airshows in the southeast US for a year. Having worked with a machine that behaves, according to the book, as the original did I can't understand what made any of these men think that human flight was possible. And yet, they did. 0:18 - R.I.P. Otto Lilienthal. 08-10-1896 "Sacrifices must be made."

  • "At this rate I doubt man will fly for 50 years, maybe even 100" ...Wilbur Wright August 1901, on the train back home from Kitty Hawk

These "pioneer-era" machines look stupid now, but that's because we know which ideas work and which don't. Each of those men believed in their idea enough to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars building each one of those contraptions only to see them fail. That's a bitter pill. But we learned from their failures as much as from their successes.

  • i have always wanted to be a pilot...

  • without the advancement in technology we would still be in caves humans are made to expand, explore challenge ourselves to do the impossible and yet people say that we shouldnt that we should have just stayed in our caves and died without leaving our mark on the world

  • Whoever posted this video, thank you!

  • "When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."

I know we have all probably heard this quote before, but personally I love it.

  • "Transforming unknown places from tall tales into pictures on postcards home" Quote of the month for me.

  • This seems to have become an obsession lately... Ah well, this IS one of the best songs to feel like listening to on repeat for a while I think

  • This is such a beautiful piece, Helen Jane Long deserves to be more recognised!

  • I have to say, British Airways adverts make me proud to be British.

  • @7lakings7 go away. no one needs you here

  • @Olgiesparr ur women r ugly too. and fix yo teeth!

  • 2:42 ticks and BOOM a massive chill runs down my back! I love music that gives that feeling of frisson!

  • What a stupid the guy on 0:48 But it show that all start with a dream and if necesary give your life. Thanks to those guys to make the aviation happend. And Thanks to Helen Jane Long and the person to take his time to make this awesome video!!!

  • this bitch copied the pirates of the carribean song, SO U BRITS R PLAGIARISTS TOO!!!

  • FUCK BRITISH AIRLINES. their youtube channel blocks comments so i couldnt find this song. CENSORSHIP IS WRONG IN AMERICA u atheist shitbags

  • @7Lakings7 I prefer this over He's A Pirate. ._,

It's funny though, when this is sped up it sounds like it, but it's about aviators instead of pirates.

  • Beautiful ...

  • Its like pirates of the Caribbean meats Einaudi. Genius!

  • beautiful!!!!!!

  • Quite possibly one of the greatest pieces of music ever created. Goes along quite nicely with one of the greatest commercials ever made...

  • I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

  • it's incredibly rare that i find a piece of music beautiful, and this is one of them

  • This needs to be in Skyrim!

  • Oh my this music needs to much longer, beautiful!

  • nice video, showing whole aviation history

  • Comment removed

  • Inspired !

  • Brilliant video. Maybe too much military at the end though. The A380 would have been nice to see....

  • If this doesn't give you goosebumps, nothing ever will!!

  • I love this track and I bought it on iTunes... Thank you Helen jane Long and thank you for uploading this video the images fit the music PERFECTLY.

  • Britain; a country without equal

  • fucking fantastic.

  • Its been a long road. 17 Dec this year will mark 108 years of powered flight. How we take it for granted. So next time you get on that passenger jet to where ever you are going, just pause for a moment. .....and remember those men and women, those pioneers, engineers, test pilots who forged that road. Marvel at what they achieved. Then walk on, sit down and enjoy your flight.

  • @knightsoflegion Great. Now I'll be listening to this on my iPod on my flight to Denmark at New Year. :P

  • @knightsoflegion

oh yes, what titans they were! contributing to more fucking up of our planet because of human greed and laziness! brilliant!!

  • @NormbrettaMod Yeah, greed and laziness, because it's lazy to not want to take a 3 month journey across the planet with a high risk of sickness.

Go fuck yourself, honestly. calling Humanity out on all it's flaws is just fucking pathetic.

Is a spider lazy for waiting in it's web instead of actively hunting?

Is a wolf greedy for surplus killing?

    No, they aren't.

We're an amazing species, whether you can come to terms with that or not is your problem.

  • if exploiting the entire world and tyrannising every other creature because they cant do anything about it for our own selfish needs (and which, in actual fact are the reason we're heading for extinction) makes us amazing then i guess we are. if forcing ourselves on and draining just about every habitat we've ever set foot in makes us amazing then, okay. if you give me a list of all the things about us that make us "amazing" then think about it deeply and you'll find that's why we're NOT.

  • @exploiting the entire world?

Animals drive themselves to extinction all the time, we aren't the first or the last, we were smart enough to figure out how to migrate and that's why we're exploiting, any other animal in out position would do the same shit, and we aren't even doing much wrong, animals take and never give back either, but that's okay because they don't know any better, all you hippy preacher assholes who think they're better then everyone else because they call humanity shit

  • @spoogeling bitching about it on youtube and do something about what you find "wrong" with us you insufferable sheep.

  • @spoogeling

    (continued)

"with great power comes great responsibility" - and we can't handle that responsibility. we've become mad with power. you say how much better we are than all these animals that keep to their place yet, do you see them destroying the earth as well as each other? they're like the good kids at school that do what they've been told (or programmed) without question whereas we are the total opposites of it and for that, have ruined our future (like the bad kids).

  • @NormbrettaMod are incredibly predictable asshats. What other animal flies without wings? what animal dives to the greatest depths with no hard exoskeleton or jelly bodies? Who was the first of earth's species to journey to space? Who can think rationally and feel emotions and interpret things better then any other animal?

You guessed right unless you're stupid.

We're amazing, we can travel a planet in a few hours when it took a month to travel half that distance just 100 years before, now stop

  • @spoogeling

you know that's incredibly similar to the argument i see from white supremacists. "who made the biggest empire in the world?" "who created the car? or the train?" why don't you just think for a moment what contribution we have made to keeping life going on earth. what have we done for nature, the very thing that we our our existence to other than wreck it?

in a sense, other animals that follow their instinct without question are "better" than us because that way, they're no harm.

  • @spoogeling

    (continued)

how useful are all these things we've made other than for fulfilling our own selfish desires? i mean, most of those things that make us "better" are the reason that our population is so mad and that we likely won't exist in the next millenium. great...whether a god or mere spontanuity "designed" the circle of life, "it" certainly knows a heck of a lot more about it than us. we're a fault in evolution. we were only ever meant to be part of nature, overlords of it.

  • @spoogeling the dog was the first species in space

  • "British Airways – To Fly, To Serve" brought me here!

  • Love this piece. Reminds me of Michael Montes.

  • That magical moment, at 1:01. Brings a tear to my eye.. the moment it all began.

  • Beautiful <3.

  • One of the best videos I've seen which correlates to the music.

  • This reminds me of some of Ludovico Einaudi's music. It's really nice.

  • To reach the Limits of Man's grasp, brushing the heavens, touching Space, reaching the final frontier in just a few seconds, climbing towards the very sun and the moon and the stars in the sky. Reaching new heights. To fly is to serve.

  • Song sounds familiar from 2.03 and even more from 2.42 can anyone relate this to any other classical piece?

  • @MrMcellroy The new British Airways advert

  • @MrMcellroy maybe the piano main soundtrack??? i'm not sure but it does sound a bit familiar x

  • @MrMcellroy maybe the piano main soundtrack??? i'm not sure but it does sound a bit familiar x or the narnia soundtrack

  • @MrMcellroy I think you might be thinking of Philip Glass from The Truman Show or possibly "Michael Nyman Band - The Heart Asks Pleasure First" which is the tune from "The Piano" a 1993 Drama film... Hope that helps

  • @MrMcellroy Defintley the NEW british airways advert i love it and i understand what you mean

  • @MrMcellroy Primavera by Ludovico Einaudi? :)

  • Just makes you realise how amazing the ability to fly is.

  • its not just me who thinks it sounds similar!!! :D i love you, i thought i was going crazy

  • and to think how far we have come since the very first imaginations of flying, only 110 years ago... great advert, and a very appropriate song.

  • guy at 00:40 brings a whole new world of pain to ice-skating

  • Although I haven't heard of this melody before, found it soothing and light... thanks for uploading.

  • i think of my friend who was hit with a road side bomb, and his struggles all the way to his passing

  • Sorry I forgot to mention the video...It is fantastic...I love watching it...

  • I saw the commercial for the first time yesterday and fell in love with it...I had to find out about the music so came to youtube first..Thanks for posting this haunting and beautiful song...

  • I would drop everything when this ad came on and even rewind the DVR to hear this song until I finally looked it up tonight. In it's entirety the piece is stunning and the video and it's incredibly moving.

The heartbeat sound during the suspension and the background radio chatter in the British Airways ad really add a ton of drama.

  • Leroy Jenkins @ 0:48 =\

    R.I.P

Watching this video has further encouraged my passion and commitment for flying. This song will be ringing through my ears on my next flying lesson, nevermind ATC!

  • Thank you so much for uploading. This song is lovely, and the video is incredible.

  • This song gives my goosebumps :)

  • .....and it will keep getting longer, as long as there are those who wish to dream to reach the skies on their own wings!!!

  • I'm committing internet blasphemy here, but is she better than Hans Zimmer? I think she might be...

  • @nateisbord2 If everything she writes is this good and dynamic, we could start saying such things!

  • @nateisbord2 As beautiful as this and many of her other pieces are, she still has a ways to go before topping Hans Zimmer.

  • I'm such a dork: The original commercial made me cry and I'm not even British.

  • @FergusMcDopey You are my new best friend.

  • @FergusMcDopey Agreed, definately one of my favourite adverts of all time... truly wonderful

  • @FergusMcDopey If you're passionate about aviation and good music, it should! I did to! Reminded me very much of the film One Six Right. I think Hellen could have done a much better job with the soundtrack for that film though, even better the one Nathan Wang wrote!

  • @FergusMcDopey it is a rather moving advert from british airways.

  • Comment removed

  • @FergusMcDopey nothing wrong with that =] i lovedd the music for the commercial!! <333 and the commercial its self was amazingg
