@K00lkane: The contraption at 0:32 is the John W. Pitts Skycar. Pitts spent what must have been a tremendous amount of time and money trying in vain to make his idea work. He even went through the trouble of patenting the machine. Even though his design was a failure, we can still admire his tenacity and learn from his efforts.
The first minutes of this dramatic song is very soothing...makes my want to cry. Then, the last, that's my favorite part. Love those pictures and videos too!
Whenever I here this song it reminds me of how I met my boyfriend, I was waiting for a flight to Spain I was standing by the window looking out at the planes when he came and stood next to me, he had amazing eyes and I felt drawn to him, it's weird but everytime I here this song it makes me want to cry XD
@knightsoflegion: If you only knew how difficult it is to build and work with a flying machine from this era. I built a reproduction Wright 1902 glider (hull #8) in 2002-03 and exhibited at airshows in the southeast US for a year. Having worked with a machine that behaves, according to the book, as the original did I can't understand what made any of these men think that human flight was possible. And yet, they did. 0:18 - R.I.P. Otto Lilienthal. 08-10-1896 "Sacrifices must be made."
"At this rate I doubt man will fly for 50 years, maybe even 100" ...Wilbur Wright August 1901, on the train back home from Kitty Hawk
These "pioneer-era" machines look stupid now, but that's because we know which ideas work and which don't. Each of those men believed in their idea enough to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars building each one of those contraptions only to see them fail. That's a bitter pill. But we learned from their failures as much as from their successes.
without the advancement in technology we would still be in caves humans are made to expand, explore challenge ourselves to do the impossible and yet people say that we shouldnt that we should have just stayed in our caves and died without leaving our mark on the world
"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."
I know we have all probably heard this quote before, but personally I love it.
What a stupid the guy on 0:48 But it show that all start with a dream and if necesary give your life. Thanks to those guys to make the aviation happend. And Thanks to Helen Jane Long and the person to take his time to make this awesome video!!!
Its been a long road. 17 Dec this year will mark 108 years of powered flight. How we take it for granted. So next time you get on that passenger jet to where ever you are going, just pause for a moment. .....and remember those men and women, those pioneers, engineers, test pilots who forged that road. Marvel at what they achieved. Then walk on, sit down and enjoy your flight.
if exploiting the entire world and tyrannising every other creature because they cant do anything about it for our own selfish needs (and which, in actual fact are the reason we're heading for extinction) makes us amazing then i guess we are. if forcing ourselves on and draining just about every habitat we've ever set foot in makes us amazing then, okay. if you give me a list of all the things about us that make us "amazing" then think about it deeply and you'll find that's why we're NOT.
Animals drive themselves to extinction all the time, we aren't the first or the last, we were smart enough to figure out how to migrate and that's why we're exploiting, any other animal in out position would do the same shit, and we aren't even doing much wrong, animals take and never give back either, but that's okay because they don't know any better, all you hippy preacher assholes who think they're better then everyone else because they call humanity shit
"with great power comes great responsibility" - and we can't handle that responsibility. we've become mad with power. you say how much better we are than all these animals that keep to their place yet, do you see them destroying the earth as well as each other? they're like the good kids at school that do what they've been told (or programmed) without question whereas we are the total opposites of it and for that, have ruined our future (like the bad kids).
@NormbrettaMod are incredibly predictable asshats. What other animal flies without wings? what animal dives to the greatest depths with no hard exoskeleton or jelly bodies? Who was the first of earth's species to journey to space? Who can think rationally and feel emotions and interpret things better then any other animal?
You guessed right unless you're stupid.
We're amazing, we can travel a planet in a few hours when it took a month to travel half that distance just 100 years before, now stop
you know that's incredibly similar to the argument i see from white supremacists. "who made the biggest empire in the world?" "who created the car? or the train?" why don't you just think for a moment what contribution we have made to keeping life going on earth. what have we done for nature, the very thing that we our our existence to other than wreck it?
in a sense, other animals that follow their instinct without question are "better" than us because that way, they're no harm.
how useful are all these things we've made other than for fulfilling our own selfish desires? i mean, most of those things that make us "better" are the reason that our population is so mad and that we likely won't exist in the next millenium. great...whether a god or mere spontanuity "designed" the circle of life, "it" certainly knows a heck of a lot more about it than us. we're a fault in evolution. we were only ever meant to be part of nature, overlords of it.
To reach the Limits of Man's grasp, brushing the heavens, touching Space, reaching the final frontier in just a few seconds, climbing towards the very sun and the moon and the stars in the sky. Reaching new heights. To fly is to serve.
@MrMcellroy I think you might be thinking of Philip Glass from The Truman Show or possibly "Michael Nyman Band - The Heart Asks Pleasure First" which is the tune from "The Piano" a 1993 Drama film... Hope that helps
