  • looool :D

  • bwhahahahaha..."g is for gun"! that was awesome!

  • i absolutely love this episode (-: i can't join the discussion though as I have no knowledge whatsoever in that respect...You child is soo sweet btw!

  • Thank you!

  • You're awesome. I so subscribed.

  • Thank you very much for commenting and subscribing!

  • I noticed that you not only had time to teach your son about using a fork but also threw in some valuable advice on nutrition. One of the reasons for the differences may be that the Czech Republic needs (or maybe just wants) a growing population while California already has more than enough people. aloha :)

  • LUv your vlog, one thing I notice is no art on the walls just curious because I am a painter

  • I'm a painter and my husband does photography. We have plenty of art, just not seen in this video. :)

  • One day I like to see your paintings, hmm I seen your dripstone vid that would make awesome painting. see ya

  • Very informative and very entertaining as always. Thank you.

  • Thank you, too!

  • Thats perty cool considering the only draw back is dog poop everywhere:)

  • My cousin and his Danish wife live in Copenhagen, so this doesn't surprise me. Europeans just do the whole "living life" thing MUCH better than we do, or ever have. Ever will? That remains to be seen.

  • LOL. Chocolate cake is awesome. I don't know much about maternity benefits, but this was a really interesting video. :D

  • Thank you, JF!

  • Lucky you to live in Czech Republic

  • Your "cultural differences" series looks terrific. I've only watched this one so far but I'm on my way to check (no pun intended!) out some more. Thanks for subscribing.

  • Thank you. I hope you enjoy the series. Thanks for subbing me, too!

  • Nice benefits! You son is a cutie! Just curious, would he be officially a citizen of the Czech Republic if he was born there or be a citizen of his parent's country?

  • Thank you. Great question, vidular. The CR does not have the same law as the USA where if you are born on the soil you are a citizen. My husband is Ukrainian and has permanent residency in CR (I only have a work permit visa), and the best my son could get was permanent residency like his dad.

  • (answer continues) The only citizenship my son has is American (we didn't bother sign him up for the Ukrainian one). But it would have been nice for him to have a dual citizenship in USA and CR (CR being part of the EU now).

    :)

  • I like your observations on cultural differences, so much in fact that I think its time I subscribed to you :0)

  • What was happing in the dark with the moaning noises??? Explain in more detail please!!

Oh and I loved the letter "G" Qcard! I laughed so hard I almost choked on my grapes!!

  • I can not offer much in the way of maternity leave anecdotes but this video was amusing. You are so animated and the editing is great :)

  • Thank you, Jane!

  • LOL! Very funny and worth the wait! Love the editing too! If I ever move to the EU and have a kid, I definitely will come back and consult this video. You are the best mom ever!!!

  • I was looking forward to your reply. Thank you!

  • Great video! :D I would be interested in your perspective on how these maternity benifits benifit Czech society, or how they are reflected in society. For example, are infants/children more visible in the CR?

  • Your question is the part missing from my video. There are few preschools/daycares here compared to USA, but there are more and more opening up each year as the society changes towards Western ways. During business hours, the parks are filled with moms, babies, and elderly people. I enjoy that very much. So I guess you can say that they are more visible. I think they reflect the culture in that the Czech people truly value child-rearing AND women's rights in employment.

  • Another issue is that the Czech population is down, and the gov't is offering generous incentives to those willing to become moms (including even foreign residents). I was lucky to get in on those benefits. It includes money and job security.

  • Great video my friend. Maternity benefits in Cali are simply awful. I've always been impressed with other countries and how they handle this issue along with health care. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

  • :) Thanks wulf!

  • Thanks so much, sweet-peach! There's more to come in this series. :)

  • How fantastic! The CR sure seems like a wonderful place to have and raise a child. And this was so entertainingly done! I can't help but tell you that I love your visual style - both in the way you put your video together and in your own personal fashion. I feel like Mr. Blackwell or something but the combination of the braids in your hair, the lovely necklace and the (embroidered?) flower-pattern dress is just fantastic. Fun, casual, natural and beautiful. More please! :) - Mike

  • Oh, Mike. I'm such a sucker for flattery. *blushing*

Thank you for such a nice comment. I don't do videos very often, but I'm always snooping around this site...commenting...concocting what my next video will be. I have lots more jewelry to show off! :)

  • The maternity leave benefits are great in Italy too - on the downside, childcare is non-existant so when mothers do return to work, 90 percent of kids are taken care of by grandparents, and the state relies heavily on that. Sounds nice for family but also makes the country incredibly immobile. So transfers for work for young families are nearly non-existent.

  • I want some chocolate cake now....hmmm...now where did I get that idea?

Oh ..I just noticed you subscribed to me! Thanks for that - I found you through Lisa (traveler1967) so nice to meet you

    Lesley:)

  • Thanks so much for watching and commenting (and thanks to Lisa for sharing her friends with me)!

That's a very interesting point you make about Italy. We have a similar problem here, although very recently things are changing and many new preschools and daycares are openning up every year! It's a great investment to make right now, actually. Hmmm, maybe I'll open a daycare...yeah, G is for GUN, kids!

  • you seem like a cool mom

  • Thanks! Spare the rod, spoil the child.

  • I was a stay at home Mom, so I had all the benifits in the world! I was lucky to be able to do that!! Love this series...very interesting!

  • YES! Being home with your children is the greatest benefit! Good for you!

    Thank you. :)

  • Great video! I remember an initiative for modest paternity benefits being put on the ballot a couple years back here in SF. It seemed like such a progressive idea, but it looks like we're just playing catch up.

  • So true. I think that Cali is quite progressive in many ways, but not in this case. I was reading recently about how the USA feminists generally have not pushed for things like "the right to stay home and get your job back later," (they don't want to talk much about the barefoot and pregnant image), whereas feminists in some European countries would push for the maternity bennies. Perhaps this is part of the story here. :)

  • In Poland, you get 2 extra days paid holiday per year per child under the age of 14, per parent. You also get the sorts of stuff you talked about for Czechia. I can hear the "kak polozhono druzyam" song coming off some toy. We've got a rabbit that sings that.

  • Oh! I didn't know that about the holidays. Perhaps CZ has a similar law. I'll look into that, thank you.

    :)

  • Hey! I had all 3 of my babies here in California, took off 6 weeks each time, but with no pay whatsoever! I did not know I was entitled to some income, and did not ask about it. Now I see..they figured, since I didnt ask, they were certainly not going to bring it up! Geeeeeeez........

  • LOL! Perhaps the law did not apply for you. I think there are some loopholes in the law. Some companies are not obliged to follow it, but I'm not sure why.

I had to "remind" my boss several times in order for me to get my benefits. I shouldn't have needed to do defend my rights, but rules are a lot more "lose" here in Europe. Okay, that's a whole nother episode...

  • Another excellent video!!! Maternity benefits seriously SUCK compared to other parts of the world! Also, if you look at the amount of vacation we get! I guess we just have to remember things are not perfect anywhere. There are also many things to be thankful for. However, I think they have the right idea when it comes to parenthood. I'm just now going back into the world of working and my daughter is almost 11! ((HUGS)) Lisa P.S. Little man is ADORABLE!!!

  • Thank you, Lisa. I think it's great that you stayed with your daughter all these years.

I AM rooting for you to get the job you want, however, I fear that the job will interfere with your youtube obligations. :) What will we do then?

  • Awesome video.. I enjoy hearing about the differences. Great presentation too!

  • Thanks, Jinxie! Glad you liked!

  • Excellent presentation of the subject, and I loved your tongue-in-cheek. Those were the days.

  • Thank you. Slowly but surely a new side of me is being revealed as I become more comfortable on yourtube. I was so serious in my first videos, and now I'm having more fun. I've always been a "slow-to-warm" type of person.

  • My reply to your first video makes me look like a Prophet.

  • It's true. Perhaps you saw that wild, suppressed gleam in my eye! Only a person with great perception (or a prophet) could pick up on that. :)

  • Great video. Love your hair. Cake for breakfast, what's wrong with that? hmmmm. It's been too long since your last video. hee hee

  • Thank you!

I love sweets anytime, but I kinda hide it from the little guy because he's too young for so much sugar. I won't be able to get away with it much longer; he's growing so fast. :)

  • Chocolate cake for breakfast yum!! LOL! xxx hugs xxx

  • I don't give the babe sweets, so unfortunately I took the cake away from him after the video clip. He didn't really care. My hubby and I ate the cake while baby slept that evening. :)

  • :-)

  • I had my children back when maternity leave consisted of quiting your job as soon as you started to show and staying home until the last child started school -- and believe me, this was considered "the benefits." Things have changed a lot, haven't they?!

  • LOL! Yes, of course. I hadn't thought of how things were back in the day! Thanks for the added info. :)

  • This was so fun!

I can't say I can contribute much to the conversation, but it was very fun nonetheless!

  • Thanks! I'm happy that it can be fun for viewers who may not be so interested in the topic. :)
