Why did you cut out the end of the sauna scene where Ben Stiller tells his "Best"? That's the most shocking of the whole scene and it's not as Great with out it..
Is it just me or was that sauna scene creepy and funny all at the same time, i mean i am not usually tickled by such things, but the delivery of Patric Jason was excellent the pace was wonderful. I wonder where Timmy is now :)
I've always like Jason Patrick ,he is a magnificent charming actor ,one actor that you stop to look at.the first thing you notice is how gorgeous he looks! And especially Jason is the most REALLY attractive good looking actor! :D :)Love him!
the monologue was disturbing, but very well delivered. jason patric is one of the most underappreciated actors of our time. loved him in the lost boys, love him now. and hey, he's still pretty good lookin.
@nyhcara I agree. I thought he should have won Best Supporting Actor over four of the five actors nominated that year (it would be a very close call between him or Ed Harris).
in my opinion the shower monologue was meant to be a departure from his sociopathy. it was one of the most real and poignant stories i've ever heard tell. beautiful. of course i wouldn't expect most people to understand that. go ahead and cringe if that's the only way you can handle it.
No, I think it just further drives the point home about his sociopathy. But I wouldn't expect you to understand that...I guess. See how unnecessary it is to bash people for no reason? They raped that kid and he rationalized his behavior because of his attraction to him. If I'm wrong, it would be cool to have an interview with the Neil LaBute or Jason Patric.
I completed agree. There is nothing "beautiful" about this scene! "Cary" is so deeply narcissistic that he believes his part in a gang rape of "Timmy" was actually a pleasant, sexually gratifying experience for the kid. Yikes. And big yikes to anyone who thinks this scene is anything but sadistic (brilliant acting, but sadistic character).
Aaron Eckart (sp) has an unbelievable range. Here he's portrayed as a spineless boob...but look at him in In The Company of Men. Total different character, but both convincing
I adore this film - at this point I'm not sure whether or not it's better than In the Company of Men as far as Neil LaBute films go. Jason Patrick is cast as the quintessential cunt and does a brilliant job of it.
OMG, that was the best monologue of all time. So creepy that its funny. Totally forgot about this movie but it helps for a presentation on pychiatric disorders. BTW, he is not sociopathic, I would say he is more psychopathic. His character would be suffering from a cluster B narcissistic personality disorder. Fascinating.
This is why Jason Patric is so freakin' amazing. Underrated at every turn. Check out "Rush" and "Narc." And for the doubters out there that don't think he's realistic...please. He's so real, it's pathetic. Jason Patric is so beautiful and he's got a great soul, or at least he appears to in the few interviews he's done so this is quite a performance. I absolutely love him in any role. Even when he's a complete *sshole, he's brilliant.
Disregards truth for shock value. The writer decided to create a sociopathic character because he thought it would be interesting and provacative.
And then these guys sit around and pose stupid questions to one another so he can deliver his big monologue as if to say, "Hey, look how crazy I am. I told ya I'm fuckin' nuts."
Honestly, who the hell would be friends with this guy? Who talks in psychotic monologues?
I liked what Jason Patric did with it. But it's not very honest.
@FrankieWoodside - They're all meant to be bad people and it comes off as pretty realistic to me. I'm sure if you trawled the darker sides of the internet there'd be quite a few people like this.

i don't care if you rate my comment as poor, but this movie is horrible and the scene is not funny at all..if you think rape is funny, you wouldn't think the same if it happens to someone like your mother, your sister, your brother, or even you...you gotta be really fucked up in your head to even think this is a good monologue...
this scene is supposed to show the perspective of the rapist. its supposed to be creepy. its supposed to have haters. that just means that the acting is amazing. you have to respect a movie for what its about. if you walk in hoping that this is a comedy of course your going to get mad.
What I'd love to see is Patric's character cross paths with Glenn Close's character from "Fatal Attraction" or Linda Fiorentino's from "Last Seduction."
I remember this movie from several years ago. I freaking loved it. He is completely crazy and messed up but Jason did an amazing job and sold it well.
If you're not smart enough to know and appreciate the scathing work of playwright Neil La Bute, then GTFO of here!!! This is the jaw-dropping monologue from Jason Patric's sociopath from YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. Some of the best acting he's ever done...
This shows that you can truly be a sociopath without killing anyone.
