"I would let him pet me..."...( Now ain't THAT pre-code?)... And interesting, that the baby-voiced girl could dance, too! She was somethin', wasn't she?
The sweat under her armpits shows how hot those lights were back then. Awful way to live. She supposedly made quite an impression in the Vaudeville theater.
cyndi lauper covered this song in a similar voice on her album "She's So Unusual", as an (uncredited) intro to, I think, the last song on the album whose title I forget just now. I never knew what it was from!
Actually there are several feature movies that Helen made at Paramount. I believe this is from "Sweeties." I have two in my 16mm film collection, "Pointed Heels" and "Dangerous Nan McGrew." Although I don't think any of these have been released on commercial video, bootlegs can be found on e-Bay from time to time. She also made a few short subjects.
In case it doesn't jump out at you right away, "He's So Unusual" is about a girl with gay boyfriend. This is one of the earliest recorded 'gay interest' songs.
Gloria Steinam and feminists in general could take lessons from her!

Brilliant - one of the most entertaining clips I've watched on Youtube in a long time - a real surprise - the dancing at the end is splendid :)

It's nice to see a slim Jack Oakie dancing up a storm with HK; his later films usually featured him at a heavier point in time.

i like that the guy falls off the ladder, probably dies or suffers a serious injury, and everybody just laughs.

The artists always depict Betty Boop as skinny, but this proves she was as average as any girl and everyone loved her.

@KCrose2 well legally betty boop was not based on helen kane
dangerousdashie 3 months ago
Her breakthrough to Betty Boop was a great achievement. Too much competition to be sexy when she was novelty voice.

@z978ady - There was no such thing as air conditioning back then, either.

I've always wondered how Helen managed to obtain that delightfully high-pitched, almost childlike, voice of hers.

Helen is just as cute as a button in this, and her voice is just amazing to hear.

She died in 1966 I believe. She would be over 100 if she were still alive.

Helen Kane who is the voice of betty boop

Mae Questel, a voice impersonator, is the voice of Betty Boop. Helen Kane sued the producers of Betty Boop for theft of image. She lost the case.

@Postduster sad that there was a law case over an imaginary person.

I like that she isn't a skinny little thing. She has a soft femininity.

FYI... Helen Kane was the model that Max Fleisher used to create Betty Boop. Mae Questel supplied the voice. Helen Kane sued but she lost.
