  • es excluyente del album ghost in the machine, pero es agradable al oido , la voz de Sting le dá el sello inconfundible de The Police, pero es pegajosa y adictiva a la primera.-

  • It is a matter of taste of course but there are some songs from the Synchronicity - era that would have benefitted other kind of lyrics such as "Once upon the daydream" or King of Pain. According to some books Sting became big headed around "Zenyatta" already suggesting just Stewart's drums on his demos leaving Andy out and that other's compositions would not even be listened at all.

  • Now THIS one sounds like it could almost be a Steely Dan track. This one is really pretty interesting -- Would certainly have been interesting if they actually recorded it (IE: Stewart's DRUMS!)

  • Ok who had it first? The Police or Dusty Springfield?

  • @countessbraley

Sting wrote it, and gave it to Dusty...it's very likely this is the very demo he gave her.

  • this song is so fucking awesome there's so much they could have thrown out of GITM to replace with this

  • @ketchup143 Oh i dont have any problem with GITM tracks, just so many have been overplayed (like on Synchronicity, I could go 100 lifetimes without hearing Every Breath You Take) as to make them seem 'weak'.

This song is allright here, not so much on Dusty's album.

  • aw man this is way better than half the songs on ghost in the machine. why didn't they put this on there?

  • @ketchup143 AGREED!

  • thanks so much for uploading this! where in the world did you find it? :)

  • @kakadoodoo3000

    Online...just search around.

  • @POLICEchout thanks. :)

  • Hey, POLICEchout, I was looking for Police demos on the net and I found out there's another version of this track (take 1 of it, actually). Do you happen to have it? I never found it to download. Thanks!

  • @chomanomann No, this is all I have! I'd love to hear it.

  • @POLICEchout Yeah, gotta keep on searchin'! Thanks anyway.

  • oh, wheel never be friends as journey never plays at jazz fess for your lame excuse in twentyten with throat cancer or megalamaniacial respond post katrina it's almost 2011

  • @ePhilosopher9 You need to learn how to properly form a sentence before you can call yourself a philosoper.....

  • THX

  • version mp3 exists?

  • Version mp3 exists?

  • crappy song... no wonder they discarded it.

  • BASS LINES PL0X?!

  • The chourus reminded me of Sitng's solo "We'll be toghether tonight". Recycling ideas?

  • this song is kicking my ass

  • This is SUPER! I love it.

  • Holy the bass is so awesome

  • this is great i can't stop listening to it!

  • i love this!

  • is this the Police or Howard Jones?

  • Its Howard Jones!

  • This would have been a really good single but I think that Andy and Stewart wanted rid of it, in Andy's book he remembers being appalled by the demos brought in because of all the synth on them. He thought they sounded like any other band. I'd say though if Stewart got to do proper drums on this it would have been unreal and had that Police sound to it.

  • "We'll be together tonight.. Toooo getttttther".

You don't hear it??? shapes of things to come. we all know the story behind GITM. Sting stretches out.. and a two people got punched in the eye. Watch the Elvis Costello Spectacles episode with our boys.. interesting.

  • Ok so it's a really great song.

  • Puts me in the mind of Eddy Grant....sounds like he could have wrote it. Good song!

  • THIS SONG GETS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD!

  • I had only heard Dusty Springfield's version of this, which appeared on her 1982 album WHITE HEAT (produced by co-writer Jean-Alain Roussel). I had no idea Sting had done a demo for the Police, and I REALLY had no idea that Dusty's version would be so similar.

I guess I understand why Police purists (if that's the right way to view them) would not care for it...but it's actually a cool little song...

  • I agree, it sounds like 80's-disco-music - but Sting's distinctive voice shines even in this demo. Plus, I'm sure if they had decided to produce/publish this song as a group, they would have replaced the disco sound with the unique Police-sound. ; )

  • How i can get this on CD in good quality??!!!!!!

    Ok - ok, i guess it's impossible...

  • Horrible. I love the Police but I am glad this was never released.

  • A real gem that should have been released.

  • why did almost all of Sting's demo's of this era have 'don't' in the title!?

  • Some reasons might be that his marriage was about to hit rocks, then there were legal issues just left behind on songwriting contracts. Stewart Copeland noticed Sting writing such a dark lyrics especially to Andy Summers/Sting "Once upon a Daydream" song in commentary for "Message in a Box" during Ghost era.

  • man, once again, great song haha.

here's Sting, 1980-81, ahead of all the other big-hair songwriters and stupid punk bands coming up in the UK.

so sophisticated, so mature, so great.

  • who consents, the song would have become a number one hit in 1981 ?

  • I agree, lot of 80's disco-funk in this, but this is easy to change into modern reggae sound of that era as well. I'm thinking Third World's "Now that we found love" type of thing here.

  • yeah this is gold. I can't believe they decided to scrap this tune.

man listen to that chorus. so sophisticated.

  • I'm glad they put this aside. if you wanna listen to something like this, get some early michael jackson tunes.

but probably they would come with a much better song if they had ever recorded this AS A GROUP. so we'll never know.

  • This is probably my favorite of the undeveloped Police demos--well, they are really Sting's demos, since I think he put these all together himself with a drum machine and synthesizer. I wish it had been taken further as it is quite catchy. It would have been a good replacement for one of the weak songs on Synchronicity, like Miss Gradenko or Walking in Your Footsteps--I swear I can't understand why anyone likes that stupid song about dinosaurs--or Mother or Murder By Numbers.

  • I love all of those so-called weak songs from Synchronicity. There's only one Police track that has ever bothered me, and that's Don't Stand So Close To Me '86. I've never understood everyones hatred for Mother. The music is awesome and Andy cracks me up...I love him! The way he sings it fits the lyrics. Plus, I love the dark side of The Police.

  • Mother is a great song. I heard it was originally going to be scrapped. I'm glad they kept it. How about Be My Girl, Sally?

And yes, my ears regurgitate Don't Stand So Close to Me.

  • @Don1970

mother is a great song.... odd, strange, uncomfortable, intense.

    thx andy!

  • Murder by Numbers and Miss Gradenko are great tunes, I agree that Walking in Your Footsteps should never have made the cut, and as for Mother, Someone to Talk To would have been a much more suitable replacement.

  • Maybe this is why a group is called that-a "group". I´d really love to agree with you folks, but honestly, as much as I admire Sting, possibly the best songwriter of the XX century, I´m also the biggest Police fan ever. Hands down. But this, sadly, is mediocre stuff. Let me say that again: MEDIOCRE. So, let´s not forget, bandmembers, who usually turn out to be musicians as well, have opinions that alter musical directions. All hail to Stewart and Andy!!!

  • Not every "concept" song is published. An artist may have written 1000 songs but only publishes 10% percent. I bet the Police believed this song to be mediocre and thats why it may never have been published. I hope you can now understand why the Police has not published every "concept" song . As a Police fan Ilook into the intricacies of the concept song and find how they later used these intricacies in songs they later deemed proper to publish.

  • Trying to capture that disco sound

  • lol, is it just me, or does sting look like a mad scientist in this pic? awesome demo btw.

  • Awsome!:D

  • Really nice song, nice keys and very funky bass. Not many people talk about Sting's bass playing much. He was fantastic. Thankyou for posting this. This really shows how much Sting dug RnB. Beautiful.

  • Its nice to hear songs which were made a long time ago and good to hear the ones we havent listen to before.

  • hall and oates?

  • ha ha, definitely!. And not good Hall and Oates either.

  • OMG! Cant stop listening to this! Brilliant stuff!

  • Wow..that tune has some "Groove to it"

    Out of sight.

    JW

  • I think it's catchy XP Love them!

  • You can draw a line touching all three heads once and the corresponding angles will be equal!!! XD

  • If it's any consolation, Dusty Springfield covered this song on her 1982 album "White Heat". So there is a decent version out there. :)

  • wow. i had no idea...i only found a clip of her version but it's very close...after some research i learned this song was actually co-written with Jean-Alain Roussel, who played keyboards on 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic'...so it's more than likely he did keys on these other demos too...

  • Mr.Roussel should know, the Keys on "Every Little Thing She Does.." are a Masterpiece in History of Music...

  • agreed.

  • Hi. I read somewhere that in fact Jean Roussel got the sleeve credits but never actually played in the song, that they used Sting's own demo keyboards. I'm not sure, though.

  • @POLICEchout - Probably why it missed out. Sting would have wanted all the song list to be his alone, or shared with Andy & Stewart if he absolutely had too.

  • You can tell why this song was never release. Not one of Sting's better efforts. Thanks so much for posting this though.

  • Ok...you are you to judge this. where are your grammys, albums, singles or even demo? You're not even a has-been you are a NEVER-WAS!!

  • Opinions are allowed these days. We've given up on ruthless dictators, mostly.

  • Totally agree... standard mid-80's sounding MOR radio rock format. Yuck. Sounds like Dionne Warwick. And lest anyone stone me to death for saying so, understand I've been a fan since early on.

  • This could have been a Larry laven joint. Sounds like a mid-80' funk and dance track. Sting should have just released some singles, while being in The Police-if anything but to let out some frustration.

  • dit nummer is zooooooo heerlijk gwn

    beetje disco achtig/electronisch

    fantastsich gwn!!:D:D

  • i think sting didnt forget this song,

so he made the song "we`ll be together"

  • Out of all the demos I have heard on here, it totally shows a change in the progress in the song writting anf the start of the "Long Fight" that would last for 0ver 20 years.

Sting truly shows a singualr class of song writting and still has that passion for the songs he writes. I do not think that Stewart or Andy were evern around when he wrote or recorded this particular song, maybe miles.

  • they're just so good that every song they play is beyond perfect ♥:)

  • You can see why he split the Police. These demoes are quality. This pisses on most of most of the stuff the Police were releasing at the time. The freshness and energy but coolness of this reminds me of the 'release' of Paul Weller in the Style Council at about the same time.

  • This indeed is a great song. Should have made "Ghost In The Machine". Sounds essential

  • I love the police, wish they would have come out with this one, sounds a little like level 42!

  • Woo! Jamiroquai!!

  • lyrics were too pessimism for the music..

    better.."We should be ever be.."

  • "...I like to eat my friends"

    hahahahaha...ha...heh...ahem.

  • "couldn't do without it......" Funny comment.

  • Wonderful New Wave song!! I have been The Police fan for years now!

  • Wonderful New Wave song!! I have been The Police fan for years now!

  • charming

  • Thats so Hall & Oates towards the end.

  • Not a bad song...but I can see why Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland never would have gone along with it, and why it was never released! It really does not sound like a Police song at all, and definitely wouldn't have fit in Ghost In The Machine.

  • I can't agree with you! Sounds pretty much like the Police and 1980s New Wave in general! But I can agree with you that this song would better fit to the Police 1983 (Synchronicity) or 1980 (Zenyatta Mondatta) album

  • "Sting's 1981 album"

What bullshit. Ghost in the Machine was a group effort by a band called the Police- who Sting sang with.

  • Actually ghrdng, if you would've checked the rest of what it said for the description:

"Unreleased song from Sting's 1981 Ghost In The Machine DEMOS...rare!"

the DEMOS part being crucial in why I specified Sting...he recorded and wrote these all by himself. These predate the recording of the proper album.

  • aaah, that explains all the synthesiser instruments

  • They should have found room for this track on one of their CD's

  • I agree, but where? Defiantly not on Ghost in the Machine, it wouldn't fit in.

  • I don't think Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic quite fits in with the sound of Ghost In The Machine.

I like it though, and I like this song, and I like Ghost In The Machine.

  • pure 80's, awsome!

  • Good song!

  • This is great! It's so obsessive-compulsively 80's.

  • at the heart of 80s music stood sting's musicality. here there are echoes of hall& oates, kajagoogoo, and something more on the bass that i can't pin right now, plus premonitions of "we'll be together" and "nothin' bout me" from his solo years

  • this sounds an awful lot like his later solo stuff...great stuff..thanks for posting

  • Wow, the greatest band shows they were ahead of their time in these demos. It sounds like late 80's/early 90's pop. But a hardcore fan can assume this rare material is strictly "Sting-fied."

  • thanks for all these treasures POLICEchout! The sound makes me nostalgic of the early 80s music era.

  • His voice can lift a fairly ordinary backing track to another level. In his day, he had one of the best voices around.

  • The music reminds me of that Kagagoogoo (sp?) band..."Too Shy Shy, hush hush eye to eye". I dig it though.

  • Dai Gordon togliti la maschera...lo sappiamo che sei Dio.

  • Come on...They are good demos, but it ain't the Police. And as far as the road Sting took solo....It led to the LUTE.

Luckily he is a smart man.

  • it's amazing how easily sting puts a song together. the talent on that guy is really something. i agree with you guys on the fact that all of this stuff was just shoved on andy and stewart - must have been crazy. and remember the story of sting wanting to bring they keyboard player on the demos into the studio? i really like a couple of these... wish we could hear what they would have sounded like.

  • This must have been what faced Andy and Stewart when the Police went in the studio on the last couple of albums. Sting with a complete song, not really wanting anyone messing with it too much. Must have been unbearably frustrating all round. How would Stewart come up with something to rock a tune like this up? As only Stewart knows how and it must have got on Stings tits!!!

  • Yep, these demos are further proof of the frustration they had...I was surprised Sting had so many guitar parts I assumed Andy came up with before I heard these.

I like some of these demos more than some of the released songs on Ghost.
