Actually you are training endurance here more than anything else. Speed is more efficiently acquired by training short relaxed bursts of 3 to 4 punches. Focus on staying relaxed and speed will come.

@MRCALIfornyay From my experience its to get your body conditioned to throwing loads of punches very quickly.
Once your body is conditioned to handle that you can then learn your technique in pad drills etc. but its a continuous process.
Tyson, like every other boxer, used the 'Speed-Ball' to increase stamina in the arms so he could throw more punches using the techniques he learned in technique drills.
I could be wrong of course, this is just my opinion!

Nothing else matters? Tank Abott and Bob Sapp lost more often than won throughout their entire career. Don't think about including Mike Tyson by the way. He had incredible speed, technique, and aim as well. He dodged punches and landed them accurately.
PS: They're obviously not training for technique but for speed and cardio. I hope you weren't dumb enough to not know that.
