The other one proceeds to riddle him with bullets, since that's what the police do when a suspect is tries to shoot them. Or in this case, right their name down into a magical notebook of death.

@ScrambledAndBenedict I think in the manga you ask your shinigami for a new one and he travels back to the "old man" and brings you one but in anime the pages regenerate if the notebook is full of names.
It has an unlimited number of pages, they just keep going. In the pilot one-shot the shinigami would bring you a new one if needed, but the changed when the actual series was brought in.

@thepenmen22 Saddest? I found it immensely satisfying. Near had Light labelled perfectly; he's nothing more than a serial killer. Evil consumes itself; and this scene really shows how Light's evil had consumed him.
@blaflz there was a scene from the movie I think that capitalizes on this, and I wish they'd put it into the anime on my first viewing of it. It was during L's funeral, you see Light's eyes as the "demonic Shinigami eyes", but they are blue instead of RED. He has evolved beyond the kind of evil/ugliness that a Shinigami represents, and his eyes sink into this kind of wounded despair/evil that his only known challenge has finally been removed. Light becomes truly evil in that scene, I love it.
I think the most despicable thing about Light Yagami (and most people don't catch onto this), is he tried to make Near write in the notebook. Light knows anyone who writes in the notebook cannot go to heaven nor hell. He was willing to risk Near's eternal life for his pseudo-finite-justice.

I think the most despicable thing about Light was that he had the gall to think that he had a right to decide who lived and who died. This is so stupid... Why did Light turn around all badass and scream "OR FAKE!" and show himself writing with a pen on a piece of the notebook when he didn't even finish Near's name. That's so unrealistic. Everyone there is armed, realistically he would have wrote in the same position he took out the piece of the death note, with his back to them. You can't shoot someone who appears to be writing unless you are 100% certain.
@TheKittenish A) Light has obviously gone off the deep end and as such isn't really capable of thinking very clearly. He was also scared, angry, and humiliated at being caught. B) Who the fuck said they can't shoot him in the back? All they would need to do is later pick up the piece of the notebook and confirm it with Ryuk. At the very least they could just claim that he was resisting arrest and that, with magic killer notebooks everywhere, they weren't taking chances on him writing ANYTHING.
@superlegomoose1 Just because he's a goofy nerd doesn't mean that he isn't a good shot. Remember, he's a police officer. He's no doubt been trained with firearms and such, and Light seemed to be only about fifteen feet away at the most and almost directly in front of him. It's pretty hard to miss a shot like that if you're a professional. Hell, even a drunken redneck could probably make that shot. If you're talking about him getting the nerve to do it, it's because Near's life was in danger.
@ometta7 I think he is referring to how he yanked the gun out of his jacket in less than a second and shot Light. It's not like it was in a holster, and even with a holster, it's not that easy to do that. If you shoot that fast, you might miss because you're swinging the gun so fast. Also, Matsuda only managed to shoot him in the arm while he was swinging around in pain, that's some marksman ship buddy.

I like the way that with Light's death it is so gradual and not just an instant death like ryuzaki's. At 3:20 you can really see him slowly realising there is nothing he can do and al that can be heard is his ticking watch and so he comes up with one last desperate plan. The whole way through he never gives up, always searching for a way out even though deep down he slowly realises there is none. Sigh, I wish Light had won, his plan was so much better formulated than Near's lucky one.
English laugh is so much worse than the japanese laugh. They should have at least kept that...

@thepenmen22 Saddest? I found it immensely satisfying. Near had Light labelled perfectly; he's nothing more than a serial killer. Evil consumes itself; and this scene really shows how Light's evil had consumed him.

@blaflz there was a scene from the movie I think that capitalizes on this, and I wish they'd put it into the anime on my first viewing of it. It was during L's funeral, you see Light's eyes as the "demonic Shinigami eyes", but they are blue instead of RED. He has evolved beyond the kind of evil/ugliness that a Shinigami represents, and his eyes sink into this kind of wounded despair/evil that his only known challenge has finally been removed. Light becomes truly evil in that scene, I love it.

I think the most despicable thing about Light Yagami (and most people don't catch onto this), is he tried to make Near write in the notebook. Light knows anyone who writes in the notebook cannot go to heaven nor hell. He was willing to risk Near's eternal life for his pseudo-finite-justice.

I think the most despicable thing about Light was that he had the gall to think that he had a right to decide who lived and who died. Regardless of your religious or political beliefs, the smug little bastard believed he was a god and that he could do whatever he wanted and kill whoever he wanted. That's the thought process of a serial killer.

This is so stupid... Why did Light turn around all badass and scream "OR FAKE!" and show himself writing with a pen on a piece of the notebook when he didn't even finish Near's name. That's so unrealistic. Everyone there is armed, realistically he would have wrote in the same position he took out the piece of the death note, with his back to them. You can't shoot someone who appears to be writing unless you are 100% certain.

@TheKittenish A) Light has obviously gone off the deep end and as such isn't really capable of thinking very clearly. He was also scared, angry, and humiliated at being caught. B) Who the fuck said they can't shoot him in the back? All they would need to do is later pick up the piece of the notebook and confirm it with Ryuk. At the very least they could just claim that he was resisting arrest and that, with magic killer notebooks everywhere, they weren't taking chances on him writing ANYTHING.

@superlegomoose1 Just because he's a goofy nerd doesn't mean that he isn't a good shot. Remember, he's a police officer. He's no doubt been trained with firearms and such, and Light seemed to be only about fifteen feet away at the most and almost directly in front of him. It's pretty hard to miss a shot like that if you're a professional. Hell, even a drunken redneck could probably make that shot. If you're talking about him getting the nerve to do it, it's because Near's life was in danger.

@ometta7 I think he is referring to how he yanked the gun out of his jacket in less than a second and shot Light. It's not like it was in a holster, and even with a holster, it's not that easy to do that. If you shoot that fast, you might miss because you're swinging the gun so fast. Also, Matsuda only managed to shoot him in the arm while he was swinging around in pain, that's some marksman ship buddy.

this is the scene where my heart always breaks. Light had so much going for him- he was a genius, not to mention extremely cute. he could've done so much with his life, but in the end, he had thrown it all away and died a miserable death as a serial killer...
really, it makes me cry every time.

seeing how much of a good guy light acted like when he lost his memories of the death note, he could've done such great things for the world

Claiming that he won can't really be used as a confession and just because his name wasn't written in the death note only proves that he and Mikami were working together. They can't use that to convict him of serial killing. More like an accomplice because they got more evidence to Mikami being Kira then Light. I guess Ryuk would still of killed him, so i guess it doesn't matter.

I like the way that with Light's death it is so gradual and not just an instant death like ryuzaki's. At 3:20 you can really see him slowly realising there is nothing he can do and al that can be heard is his ticking watch and so he comes up with one last desperate plan. The whole way through he never gives up, always searching for a way out even though deep down he slowly realises there is none. Sigh, I wish Light had won, his plan was so much better formulated than Near's lucky one.
