tsurucrane...i have to disagree with you,i race motocross and i shattered my left femur, torn mcl,and acl. With how demanding my sport is i was back on the bike in 3 and a half months, yes i agree with you that the screws in the hip and knee are very painful, but you just have to strive through it.
I had this done 2 monthes ago i broke my left femur in a bike accident and also damaged my iliac wing on my left side. Now im approuching my 10th week and i feel great! no pain i been off the pain relief for 3 weeks now and the nerves seem to be returning but where the scars are it still feel a little numb but my main concern is the bad leg now seems 1 inch longer and when i look in the mirror from my waist down i don't look level and i been putting a little bit of weight on my bad leg.
man just be thankful we have the technology today to correct this issue, if this was just 100 years ago you could never walk normal again and that'f if you were lucky enough to walk on two feet at all.
just let to let every no i have had this done and after about 2 to 3 months you can walk again but you get a little bit of pain in the knee were they put the screw in good luck in your healing those who have had it done or are getting it done
i had this procedure done on saturday.. let me tell you im only a week into it but damn this is a pain in the ass. Leg hurts all the time so you take the meds... meds make you high and its hard to concentrate in class. dont take the meds you cant concentrate anyways because of the pain....Good luck to those who are going to have this surgery.. mine was done very successfully id hate to be one of those with a cracked out doctor who jacks up their leg for the rest of their life!
I had a very similar surgery, if you want you can message me if you have questions about the surgery and recovery, my surgery was only 2 months ago but Ill gladly share my experience with you
I had the same surgery also and still recovering i broke mine during football and was all flipped around. I not sure about you but i broke it in three places the knee the middle and the thigh. But if they touched it pre surgery it hurt so bad. I just wanted somebodies else experience.
Yea man, you can do it. I snapped my femur in half and spent a month in the hospital, 10 pins and a steel rod still in my leg and I am a two season athlete, starter on both sports( Lacrosse and Volleyball) and team captain. work hard on your rehab and if you want to play bad enough you will.
Yea you can man, I had extensive femur surgery after a spiral fracture split my bone in two and I am a two season athlete and a starter in both sports ( Lacrosse and volleyball) and I am doin fine. Just stay focused and work hard on your rehab. If you want it bad enough, you'll get it.
Hell no man, you better be thankful you can still walk, no way in hell you going to be playing hard sports. You see those screws they put in to hold the rod? Those screws hurt like hell. You better start thinking college cause you going to be using your brain from now on. (like me, studying medicine) good luck.
i shattered my femur a little over a month ago and the put a rod 6 screws and some pins, and i completly shattered my knee and trust me it hurts really bad after surgery, traction before was terrable
honestly its not that bad...im only a lil over 2 weeks into it and i dont notice a metal rod in my leg. Right now i still experience alot of pain if i forget to take my pain medication, but if im on my meds it just feels like my legs asleep and cant support my weight... only its not numb.
I Had the pin inserted 3years ago, they removed and 6 weeks later took a week as fall over and snapped it again!!! so back to squre one and had it pinned again last week. Mine have both been inserted the hip end tho...
WTF, It doesn't hurt ONE bit... you're knocked out the whole time while they do that. I just went through this 2 weeks ago and never felt a thing... recovery has been amazingly fast...
I got hit by a truck 3 weeks ago, I had the operation the day after I got hit. Your only asleep for the operation, not the traction before, or the recovery after. Yes, it hurts. It feels like they ripped your knee into pieces and filled it with liquid.
i had this operation on my tibia and fibia, made me feel sick watching it knowing id had it done because i never knew how it was done, but hey if it makes u better lol.
I broke my femur 4" above the knee in Feb '07 during Marine Recruit training. This is the exact surgery they did on me. My knee is still tender and the screws by my hip give me constant pain. The scars still look fresh one year later. The screws by my knee are fine though. I'm able to pt like before for the most part relatively pain free but I still have trouble lifting heavier objects or doing things that require lots of hip flexion. The docs got me good to go though, Ooh-Rah Navy docs!
I busted my femur in Feb. '07 during MC recruit training. This is the exact surgery that was performed on me. My knee is still tender and the screws by my hip cause a wee little pain but I'm good to go. Run pt like I used to with minimal pain. Ooh-rah Navy docs!
i broke my left femur in 05 or 06 from a motocross wreck adn im pretty sure this is how they done mine cuz i have the long scar on my knee and the screw holes is right where it is on here
my rod was inserted around the hip area. and it is an incision in the center and the last in above the knee. but i also notice my legs is getting smaller than the other legs. it been 5 years since the surgery
There are two types of femoral nails, antegrade and retrograde. What you see in this video is a retrograde nail because it is inserted through the distal femur. It sounds like you received a retrograde nail. Those are inserted proximally down the femoral canal. The decision to select either option depends mostly on the location of the fracture. I'm guessing your fracture was located closer toward the hip than the knee? As for the leg length discrepancy, consult your doctor.
yes. i have a few questions for you if your a surg tech. i know i should prolly see a doctor but havent had time. i had a intramedullary rod placed in my tibula when i was 15 from a motocross accident. And i was wondering if i was too young for the surgery to be done.?? and i had only one screw placed in the top. Should there be more screws inserted.??just some things ive had a little anxiety about lately. should i have it removed
i wrecked my yz250 going over a 40 foot double but they didnt do it this way they did it from the top of the femur but idk my bone shattered in 3 long shards
I got hit by a teenager in March, has this surgery but do not have these incisions. so it must be done differently where I got it. Just have an incision on my hip and a short inch long one one the left side of my left leg. Got to get the rod removed soon because of infection. Ouch.
mine they put in through the back

I had this done 10 weeks ago, well, they entered through the skin near my hip instead of my knee.
I was walking two days after the operation and am still walking now hardly any pain at all, aches when led down is all I get.
I broke both femurs, one in a clean break in two and the other communited into multiple fragments, both got nailed.

How do you get by the patella in a "retrograde nail" operation?
formit 2 years ago
yeah, I'm a surg. tech. and I've done many of these. I've never seen any surgeon take this approach. We always go proximal to the fracture.

yeah all i have on my femurs are like 2 inch maybe 3 slits along the outside of my thighs. They used titanium rods

Many are reduced from the proximal diaphysis as well. It just depends on where your fracture is and how bad it is.
