  • 5.5l twin turbo diesel

  • Are you a homo¥¥¥¥¥ that would mean words out of context idiot head

  • And it pulls like a donkey on crack!

  • Road Atlanta. if you have the 2 PC sim racing games, EA sports' F1C 99-02 & Simbin's GTR, you can add the track as an add-on to them. I have driven this track on both games. very smooth and quick once you get a handle on it. VERY FAST on the F1C - a lap is no more than 80 seconds.

  • Location: America

    Track: Petit Le Mans/ Atlanta

    Race time: 24 hours

    Race type: Endurance Racing

  • @noni15081998 the track is Road Atlanta, the located is Braselton, Georgia, USA. The race length is 10 hours or 1,000 miles (whichever comes first). Did you just assume that people would think you where an authority on the subject since your post is in bullet form?! you people could at least take the 30 seconds to look it up on google so you don't look like a complete idiot to those of us who actually follow sports car racing.

  • @07tbest You do realise I was a complete noob when I posted that

  • @noni15081998 and nine months changed that!?

  • @07tbest Completley forgot about the comment :/

  • the R10's are great but every time they go against the Porsche RS Spyders from LMP2, they get there asses beat

  • @JAGRbomb68 i like how you spelled porsche and spyder the right way, but fucked up 'their'

  • It's beautiful. Turbo diesel power is the best.

  • The sound is not bad, just different to the petrol cars

  • Looks like Road Atlatan Race track

  • @HemiPantera it is.

  • Would be cool to see Mazda's improvements in rotaries duking it out against the diesels in Lemans.

  • Dommage que ça fasse le même bruit qu'un Q7...

  • I dont undersand. A TDI running at this speed should fart a big dark disgusting smoke cloud like a "normal" diesel car.. After all thats the great pride of having a diesel! Thats not happening and that should make the owners of the Ibizas and Leons and Golf really sad..

  • Proves that races arent being won by sound and just brute power :)

I really love the low deep roaring of this diesel!

  • La Guna Seca

  • @operationcwaI789789 road atlanta

  • Diesel Power! Running on BioFuel makes it even better. The amount of restrictions they put on this car shows the world that diesel is better than petrol. More mileage, more efficient, cleaner, and less noise.

  • I completely agree. I have some guys I sim race with who HATE diesels only cause they make no sound ;) I love them, They are better in every way just like you said.

    Audi TDI forever! <3

  • @sfwdcivic Uh not really cleaner (particulates and NOX are much higher). And a lot heavier.

  • @TheArfdog well, with diesels, the main exhaust particle is carbon, and carbon is i believe the 3rd (again i think) most plentiful element in the universe. so were polluting eart with whats already more than enough of. and how much heavier is the R10s diesel?

  • That's just eerie. Awesome, but eerie.

  • Ho fuck diesel wins again!!

  • The noise sounds like Peugeot whining to me.

  • yes its air going over the car the spoilers and splitters make air displace ments so it sounds like that

  • What's that swish sound is that part of the car's sound?

  • its the sound of dancing pixies splattering across the car

  • No makron. Its called the wind going over the car :)

  • Those are the turbochargers.

  • Actually, you fail. Epically. It is a turbo. A double turbo.

  • i know that tjhe engine has 2 turbos... but i was takking about sound which is repeating every maybe 20 seconds:) soo i thonk that this soun is not a turbo....:)

    SRY about my english

  • I thik, we are not talking about tjhe same thing :)

  • the sound isnt the turbo, its happening at random times NOT when it comes on boost.

  • yes

  • The turbo's

  • It almost sounds like they dubbed the wrong audio with the onboard video. But the damn thing is just that quiet! The R15 should win LeMans on its first try this year as well. All hail Audi!

  • how do those germans do it

  • The Gear Box is louder then the Motor, haha. has anyone been to a F1 race, iv'e heard that they are just insanely loud!

  • They are :P

  • did you watch Qualifying last night, how about the Brawn GP team (Honda) WOW. I cant wait for tonight!!

  • Huh? :S

  • Oh, sorry the australian F1 Grand Prix is tonight I was talking about that.

  • the race track is road atlanta

  • those audis are sooo quiet which sucks but the cars are great

  • Commentaers should never talk over onboard! more SOUNDS OF SPEED!

  • wow it's sooo smooth!

  • Great video. Nobody believes it but it's really that quiet. I work the pits at Road Atlanta and I was at the Petite Le Mans Saturday and of course Allan from Audi won again. They are definitely my favorites.

  • MY GOD THAT THING IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • It's german. Of course it's beautiful... :D

  • AMEN!

  • @CptCumshot road atlanta

  • Diesel is the wave of the future. Long gone are the dirty smelly chugging beasts replaced by finely tuned powerful and nearly bomb proof workhorses of speed.

  • Lead by the masters in Diesel tech :D

  • *Led

  • Perhaps lead was a good choice of words...lol Lead...its in fuel...lol

  • The reason it is more quite is that it is a diesel!!!!

  • No, its because it was BUILT to be silent. Put the same noise-control equipment on a diesel engine you have on your average gas engine, the diesel will be louder. The silence of the R10 is due to a combination of specially-designed mufflers and the turbochargers(turbochargers have a muffling effect on engine notes on their own). Audi wanted this thing to prove that diesel was a viable fuel whether you're concerned about noise, the environment, or speed. I'd say they did a DAMN fine job.

  • Yup Audi built a diesel to show the world that they're not always the loud smelly things they're often thought to be. Oh yeah and they wanted to win Le Mans :)

  • Yeah, but they were already laying a beat-down on EVERYONE at Le Mans with the R8 before they built the R10. If Le Mans was ALL they cared about, they could've just upgraded the R8.

  • The R8 really struggled in its final year at Le Mans though. It would have been dumb for Audi to update such an old car.

  • Well, that depends, really. If they just updated it to meet rules, yes - very dumb idea. But an overhaul of the basic design could've worked. Most current LMPs outside of the R10 use an updated version of the R8's basic design. Audi would've had a better handle on upgrading it, and would've been a safer way to go. They took a big risk to create a whole new car with the R10, and lucky for them it paid off.

Of course they HAD to have had a good feeling about it in order to take the chance.

  • I actually think it's kinda cool that they could make it quieter and more powerful than most of the other cars in the LMP1 class. It's ridiculously powerful, it's fast.. and it's quiet. It's the perfect sleeper! I personally can't wait to start seeing more diesel cars in the US cause the technology has really come a long way.

  • It's probably quiet because the turbo actually muffles the exhaust.

  • The turbo is part of the reason(its one of the reasons CART/Champ Car held onto turbos - slightly muffled exhaust note was good when racing on city streets). But its also that Audi WANTED it to be quieter. One of the points of the R10 is to prove to the public that diesel is good. By making it quiet they appeal to the people who think diesel is painfully loud. By making it FAST they appeal to the performance-minded who thinks diesel is crap.

  • what revs can this racing TDI reach??

  • a lot

  • not more than 5000rpm.

  • totally disappointing..

  • that car has been winning le mans

  • yea, so thats why any of the F1 cars cant keep up with it.

  • rudolf diesel hai rovinato tutto, non sapevi farti i cazzi tuoi...che tristezza regà,che tristezza

  • "air over the car...whistling sound"? Wouldn't that be the turbo charger? Good ol' underestimated diesel power...

  • That whistling was definitely the air passing over the car - it was not a turbo whistle. I've worked with enough turbos to be able to tell that clearly.

  • that doesnt sound bad

  • The commontators should allways shut up during onboard. It makes me mad they dont allow us to hear the cars better! Wish we could tune them out!

  • I saw this car also at Sebring in March. This car actually sounds like an electric car. The most exciting part was the Peugote TDI was just as quiet but faster than the Audi.

  • Yes please !!!!!

  • today i've have seen this car in barcelona, it's a flying carpet, absolutely quiet!!

  • I was at Sebring and these really surprised me the first couple of times they went by. they sneek up on u when u least expect it!

  • That Sebring!

Well, Is most difficult of what I think it was...

  • un trattore...

  • No goosebumbs here...!

Amazing piece of technology, but somehow the "wow" effect escapes me.

I know its supposed to be this quiet, to bust the myth of noisy Diesel engines on the road!

But I would really like to hear it without the noisedamping factors that Audi made!!!

  • audio is too low - had to turn it up way too much :(

  • The commentator says "it's remarcable quite" maybe you didn"t hear it

  • not talking about the relative car volume, but the audio level of the video itself

he should have normalised the audio

  • Its the torque that matters in racing (imo).

  • Yeah! It seems to be on a bus...

  • 800 lb ft of torque at 5000rpm! it just tore past the other car!

  • The R10 peaks at like 6-7k rpm thats why its so quiet, the rest of the field is more like 10k+

  • it`s a diesel...

  • yeah I know.

  • peak rpm of the 5.5 V12 TDI is ~5200 rpm

  • Thats engineering.

And it goes like a bia, that acceleration is just brutal.

  • ive never understood why this car is so quiet because it is diesel powered? i saw petite le mans today at laguna and it was so quiet you really could kinda hear the air passing over it.

  • yeah, i was there too , you could probably stand next to the track and the thing would pass by you without even knowing

  • It's not quiet because it's a diesel. It's so quiet because Audi wanted it to be quiet. It's to break the myth that diesels are sluggish and loud and not what you'd want on your driveway. The particulate filters do help to quieten the noise a bit more, though.

  • R10 is damn amazing!!!

  • idd!!!!!

    long live the otto-engine!

  • You wish. Here's the thing: they have a nasty habit of igniting their fuel at inopportune times, and they also fall short on the reliability scale. There's only so much power you can get from a petrol engine before you reach the ceiling on these factors.

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

  • It doesn't make much noise, but the noise that is coming out of there sounds real good for a diesel engine.

  • too true, sounds auesome

  • It's like a ferrari V12 mixed with a v-twin bike, makes me want to get a Duramax so bad...

  • wave of the future, although Penske's Spyders are a bit more dominant everywhere BUT LeMans 24.

  • I love the R10... sux tho that all LMP 1 class cars have to be closed cockpits by 2010

  • sucks? i think it's great, not only closed cockpits but also somehow externally based on equivalent road car models... it feels like ACO is planning to recreate the mid/late 90's GTP/GT1 class which is great

  • no actually they are moving all LMP1 class to be strictly factory races, and all LMP2 to be Privateers which can have both open and closed cockpits... i think its cool to to have closed cockpits too, but the open cockpit R8 and R10 were awesome. cant wait to see the closed cockpit r10 looks like

  • I don't know about LMP2, I've figured out they'd leave it as it is now (open cockpit protos) and LMP1 would become the "new GTP" class. LMP1 is going to be only closed cockpits, that's certain.

  • yeah they are leaving LMP2 open, i just checked my road&track magazine

  • wow what an amazing machine

  • I'd rather want a car that has converts more fuel into torque than into sound. If you want sound go buy an old car and remove the exhaust pipes.

  • I agree.

  • I agree! Yuk!

  • is that swishing sound the diverter valves? (almost like a blow off valve only recirculates the air because it is better for performance and runs less rich) audi/vw is def the best as far as engineering goes

  • go to a race and listen. r10 will creep up on you and simply blow your mind.

also the front brakes don't get red at all from the spectators vantage point. it is a sweet ride. go watch at the 12 hrs of sebring, you will think differently.

  • Actually, the reason you can't see the brake glow is because the R10 uses special brake "drums" and covers to help cool the brakes (which are disc brakes, BTW)

Oh, and sorry for marking your post as spam. I meant to hit the "reply" button, but clicked the "mark as spam" one... sorry...

  • My best freind and I was at the race in ATL! This car is BAD!

  • No doubt bruh...that car sounded like it had an electric motor under the bonnet.

  • Sounds different then when heard from the outside

  • Sounds nuts!

  • commentators don't have to shout? they shout when they see a great race as in GT2 - Sebring 2007.

  • That trackside camera captured the sound prefectly. That's exactly how it sounds for spectators. Incredible.

  • they are much quiter than petrol engine the commentators dont have to shout

  • plus, the regs give more displacement to diesels than turbo'd gasoline engines. where is the 'win' in that?

  • diesels raced at Le Mans in 1949 and 1950. that was decades before diesels were 'cool'

  • Yes, but they did not finish. This was the first to finish and WIN.

  • LolaJudd, this is new under the sun. This car is the first diesel-powered racecar to win Le Mans 24h. If you don't call that revolutionary, you can stick to riding your bicycle.

  • ive meet all of the alms Drivers and have all of there autographs. Also Johnny o connel (Drives the corvette) Let me sit in his corvette!!!!!!!! (This was all at st petersburg Street circuit (PS Audi R10 is not good on street circuits) (PPS IT is a 5.5 litre v10 Diesel)

  • 5.5 V12

  • twin-turbo, with mufflers and particulate traps.

  • nothing new under the sun

The first diesel-engined car to qualify and race at the 24 hour race at Le Mans was a French entry in 1949, the first race held after the war. The car was the Delettrez Diesel entered by brothers Jean and Jacques Delettrez and was of 4395 cc 6-cylinder. It did not finish, running out of fuel about half way into the race.

  • what a boring sound

  • revolutionary

  • one of the best things about seeing these cars in action is the loudness :(

  • How loud is is that car. and what is the loudes it could get. nice vid.

  • V12

  • 787B QUAD ROTARY RULZ!!! GAY FIA

  • is it a V6 OR V12 diesel?

  • its a 5.5 litre V10 diesel

  • 5.5 liter V12 TDI.

  • Get those pussy filters out of the exhaust. Let's see some SMOKE!

  • Diesel motors smoke because not all of the fuel is burnt on combustion. The turbos get more air into the engine, and the car's electronic control module controls the fuel entering for a more precise fuel burn.

  • The smoke is actually particulates which are partly down to unburnt elements in the fuel, but they appear as smoke due to deposits of carbon produced during combustion. The R10 has particularly good particulate filters which no doubt act as silencers as well. It's a common misconception that petrol doesn't produce particulates as well. It does only they aren't as visible.

  • good point!!! :-) :-)

  • I'm thinking diesel-powered sports-touring car...like a Saleen with a Chevy Turbo Diesel engine in it? Just a thought.

  • The reason rotaries were banned was because they produce to much power per displacment.

  • I go evry year to lemans and the audi is verry silents,i dont like that so much i like the heavy sounds so much!

  • Inside it sounds like a jet.Outside its quiet.let's see how the new Puegeot 908 Sounds this year's Le Mans

  • Sounds a bit like the R10. Only a lot more muffled on-board, since the 908 is closed-cockpit and is sure to have a bit of sound insulation.

  • Is the close cockpit more aerodynamic? If so why isn't the R10 close cockpit? You'd think that modern day with so much testing, there wouldn't be gaps in decisions on whether to go open or closed, you'd see either all open or all closed.

  • Depends on what the rues dictate. From 2009, LMP1's at least, have to be enclosed race cars

  • ehh..well what does that have to do with anything then, it's 2007 right now lol. What are the rules right now then? Obviously there are no restrictions on this because R10 is open canopy while the new diesel peugeot is enclosed.

  • The car would have been designed and built during 2005, where open-top cars were still being encouraged and the new P1 and P2 regs were in force (as opposed to P900 and P675). They could have built a closed car, like the Bentley, but they decided against it, for their own reasons. New proposed rules for 2009/2010 seem to be disappearing...

  • It's a shame how they want to restrict it now because of it's unfair torque advantage over the other gas powered cars. I wonder how will Peugeot's diesel entry go up against this.

  • i agree i mean they banned the 787b after it won LeMans 1991, i think that they are simply to stuck up to accept change. It uses less fuel, burns cleaner, and is a hell of alot quiter dont see what the problem is.

  • That rotarys get banned after 1991 the 24h LeMans was known befor the race.... not only the rotary was banned... all piston engines over 3.5l were banned after 1991..

  • You can have a piston engine over 3.5L dumbass

  • Indeed. The Audi is a twin turbo 5.5L. Gasoline engines with turbos cannot exceed 4.0L in LMP1 class. Normally aspirated they are allowed 6L I think. Rotaries aren't banned either. Last two years Mazda has had a tri-rotor Renesis in a Courage for the LMP2 class. The rules, however, are against the rotary. Not terribly competitive. They make the horsepower, but it takes way too many revs to get there. The power curve is just not at all workable to be competitive.

  • ya true, but for rotary lovers they dont care they are still awesome little engines

  • You couldn't in Group C cars in 1991. This only changed when LMP and GT cars came around. dzelpwr - you right, 5.5 limit for diesels, 4.0 limit for petrols with turbos and 6.0 limit for n/a petrols. It's a 3.4 n/a limit and a 2.0 with turbo limit for LMP2 cars.

  • Seems so slow until it flys past the Aston DBR9 haha

  • too true look how slow it looks when Mcnish goes through turn 12 during the race and then compare it with turn 12 in their clip to see how quiet it is... its going really fast haha

  • Hehe.. quiet but not completly silent. I can't wait to hear what the peugeot sounds like as a comparison.

  • SLIENT KILLER!

  • SILENT KILLER!

  • silver fast and beutiful

    like a flying saucer^^

  • Boo to Audi! silent race cars..phhf boring

  • i love diesels, tehy need to make it loud, to broadcast, hey i ma a diesel and i am proud of ti

  • Well, the thing is, housing developments are being built around these racetracks, and the residents are now complaining about the noise. Should've thought about that before moving in, but... The R10 might save these tracks.

  • it is just like people that move in to flight paths for airports and then complain about the noise... the race tracks will be fine though despite the noise

  • Whats that? A diesel lapped a Corvette? Why rub it in that diesels RULED the race season by posting this video?

  • Just to let you know that the R10 is in a faster racing group than the Corvette. Its almost like a F1 car vs a Corvette.

  • The R10 is in the Protoype category (LMP1 actually), and the Corvette in the GT1 class, normally quite slower per lap. This year, the difference between the winning car in Le Mans and the winning GT1 car (an Aston Martin) was 26-27 laps.

  • haha what an ignorant fool drivbiwire, silentdrifter and vikirad hit it spot on.
